How often is the database updated from the user supplied data?
User submitted data goes through an internal process which results in legitimate data appearing on the site once approved. Typically this takes about a week, but it varies.
How do I upload my data?
is a tool that maintains a WoW addon which keeps records of the NPCs, items, etc. that you encounter in the game and periodically uploads it to Wowhead, to make sure that our database always has the most up-to-date information. Wowhead is a user-driven site--we wouldn't exist without the contributions of our users, and we always encourage WoW players to come and be a part of the Wowhead community! So make sure to try the Client application if you haven't before!
Is Wowhead a Blizzard-approved site?
We certainly are! Wowhead is part of the official fansite program.

There are either three or four ads on a single page. The number depends on if the fixed ad bar (on the right side) populated a
single large ad

At one point there was potentially 5-6 ads on a single page. Due to various site performance issues and user feedback we reduced the number of ads per page in December of 2016. In order to compensate for the loss in ad revenue we compromised with a fixed ad bar on the right side, that moves with the page, displaying no more than two ads.
As of April 13, 2017 we removed one additional ad unit from potentially loading that used to be embedded in our calendar tool.
As of April 25, 2017 we launched our
. This is an alternative form of revenue for us which we find more appealing than standard ads as it tends to be more relevant to our audience and we have direct control over it. Outside of the shop, non-Premium users will see our Deal of the Day banner (example below). The banner can be closed indefinitely until the next deal is posted*. We're shooting for a new deal each day so, if you close it, no more than once a day.

Ad Placement Examples:
Amazon Affiliates is a program that allows sites to link directly to items on Amazon for purchase. If someone visits one of the links and purchases an item we receive a small referral fee as a result. This is a form of alternative revenue that we think will be valuable to our users because it increases the likelihood of you seeing products you actually want. In addition, Wowhead Staff curates the items directly so we have complete control.

Most AdBlockers are actually referring to
when they indicate a specific number. When you see a number provided by an AdBlocker it's almost certainly higher than the number of ads that actually loaded. However. each ad has its own tracking mechanisms that are necessary to know that the ad was displayed, where, how long, and a number of other variables. This means each ad may incur a number of requests that varies, let's say an average of 5 per ad. If you have a page load with 5 ads and each has 5 requests then there's 25 on your counter. Further, we track site usage with Google Analytics, which has its own requests, and other interactions may be occurring that your AdBlocker identifies as an "ad" even though it's not. Our site refreshes ads currently once every 90 seconds, so, the longer the page is open the higher the number will become.
Two examples with assumptions:
One page open for 1 hour, 3 ads loaded each time, with 5 requests per ad, reloading once every 90 seconds. You would have around 600 requests.
One page open for 1 hour. 5 ads loaded each time, with 5 requests per ad, reloading once every 90 seconds. You would have around 1,000 requests.
The above is extremely simplistic and doesn't account for all foreseeable variables involved but it should be sufficient for the average user.
Any ad that interacts with our site in undesired ways is considered "bad" or "disruptive":
Plays sound automatically without your interaction
Causes substantial site lag after a reasonable load time
Exceeds the prescribed boundaries
Redirects you to another site/page
Causes any sort of popups
Downloads something to your computer
None of the above behavior is
malicious and it's important to understand that very rarely is it
malware. Malware is software created with the
of damaging or disabling your computer. However, you should always be safe and never open anything downloaded without your permission or provide any information to a website/person that demands it without your having pursued it yourself. This is important to remember everywhere on the internet. When in doubt, ask someone.

The staff here proactively monitor the ads they see around the site while performing their duties. Anytime we discover something that is disruptive we'll relay specific ad data to our full-time ad person. That person will then contact the respective ad networks to have the ad removed and/or fixed. Further, we incorporate reports by our users who utilize the 'Report Ad' button on the site and/or click 'Feedback' and select 'Bad Advertisement'. Very specific information is provided to us when users report the ads in the recommended way, two examples are below:
Having all the above information is substantially more useful to us than a forum post, regular email or a message on Twitter. You can use those report functions as often as is necessary. You may not always receive a reply but we do investigate each one. If the issue the ad is causing is disrupting the site enough to prevent you from utilizing the report functions please feel free to send an email to as soon after the incident as possible. There are some additional troubleshooting options at our disposal that we can use at that time.
, as of May '17, we now use an Ad Screening company that uses various tools and techniques to monitor the ads displayed on our site. If it finds one that is outside our guidelines, or is in anyway disruptive, we'll be notified. Further, those additional type of reports are managed by a
employee who will take appropriate actions by getting them removed from their respective ad networks. Monitoring these reports, and proactively our ads, will be this individual's primary focus.
If we were to ever confirm genuine malware is being distributed by an ad on our site then we would immediately shut down the entire ad network distributing that ad to ensure it is no longer distributed on our site. We would not even consider restoring that network until it could ensure that the ad no longer exists and what efforts they have, or will make, to prevent such an event from occurring again in the future.
Ads are currently refreshed once every 90 seconds.
We utilize ad refreshing because our user behavior is unique when compared to your average website, gaming or general purpose. Our users tend to sit on a page for extended periods of time (an average often greater than two hours). Although information is spread across pages, a sizable amount of Wowhead players will keep numerous tabs open to refer to over a long gaming session. As such, ad refreshing is necessary for us to maintain revenue to support the site.
Some general gaming sites, including those covering Blizzard games, use this form of advertising. At this time, Wowhead isn't on an ad network utilizing these type of ads and we don't have any future plans to do so.
Across the Internet, the use of AdBlockers has steeply increased in the past few years. This has affected the revenue of many sites on the Internet, including Wowhead. As such, we've begun working with companies in an attempt to recover some of that lost revenue. It is unfair to expect the 30-40% of users who view ads to cover the cost of the other 60-70% - this simply leads to pushing an increasingly-growing amount of ads on the non-Adblocking users, which raises the likelihood of bad ads or a disruptive browser experience. Therefore, we utilize various techniques to ensure ads are displayed on our site, as is intended, to cover our costs. Those who wish to not see ads on our site
should consider our Premium subscription

There shouldn't be significant performance decreases for those using an adblocker (beyond that which would be experienced by anyone loading our site with ads displayed). However, it's hard for us to ensure that's the case due to the large number of options available. It is
that running multiple AdBlockers or changing settings in such a way as to prevent our ads from being displayed could interfere with the intended operation of our site. We're happy to troubleshoot with you if you're running one or more adblockers and suddenly have site stability issues. We're not going out of our way to
anyone who uses an AdBlocker, or several, but we can't account for the myriad of combinations and settings associated with each of them.

We have users all over the world and ads vary by geographic region. What we're seeing in Southern California will vary greatly from what you may be seeing in another state or country. Further, some ads are displayed based on personal histories so our staff may not see it at all. Tens of thousands of ads are displayed on Wowhead throughout the world. We have over a billion page views each year with 3-5 ads displayed on each one of those. It's impossible for the staff to see
of them. Therefore, it greatly helps if the community works together to report any disruptive ads that they encounter

To lessen the potential burden on the community itself we're researching, pursuing and testing Ad Quality Assurance agencies for additional screening mechanisms, we're working on additional tools that will help us find/remove disruptive ads more quickly and hopefully before they're even noticed and we're even considering additional personnel who's sole duty would be to proactively view ads and remove them before they reach the site. It's unclear how successful each of these pursuits will be but we'll continue to work towards improving the experience for everyone.
The majority of our staff have nothing to do with the ads you see on the site. Their jobs vary from creating tools/features, aggregating content/news, addressing site related bugs/concerns and maintaining the site itself. The vast majority of ads run independently of the site, in their respective ad spaces, and are a complex system that involves many different people, 3rd party companies and policies; changing those companies/policies, for a site our size, is not something that can occur quickly and requires a lot of planning and testing. The only ads we do directly control are the full page ones you may see from time-to-time that are often game related (the most recent example was World of Warcraft Chronicles Volume II) and our marketing staff is aggressively pursuing more ads of this type since we actually have control over them, as opposed to the random (or remnant) ads you see throughout the site. Additionally, we've made tangible changes, incurring a loss in revenue, to try and mitigate the impact of ads on our community while we address the larger issues being experienced with site stability. However, even if all of our plans come to fruition and are successful we'll never be able to guarantee a perfect experience for everyone, everywhere and at all times.

Why did you delete my comment?
Wowhead does not directly moderate its comments, except in extreme cases such as pornography, advertising or abuse. Instead, Wowhead uses a user-moderated comment system. Every Wowhead user can rate a comment up or down by one (or two depending on reputation) point(s). If a comment has a negative rating of negative 5 or more, the comment system automatically hides it from view (it can be viewed by clicking it).

YouTube video links shared in database comments are automatically sent for moderator review to be added to that database's Video tab. Not all videos will be added but in most cases a large majority will.
How do I report a video for deletion?
Please email if a video is no longer working to have it removed. You may also click the Feedback button on the top right side of the site.
Who owns the video submitted?
The direct link provided to Wowhead can continue to be used at the sole discretion of Wowhead.com once it has been given. However, the content itself, hosted on YouTube is not the property of Wowhead and the creating user has full rights to the content therein.

Does the Wowhead Client have spyware/malware/very bad things?
Nope! However, we don't expect anyone to just take our word for this, so we had Softpedia

Is there any way the site could be indirectly responsible for malware getting on my computer?
There have been a few cases in the past where one of our ad networks doesn't catch the fact that ad has malware and they publish it on their network. The result is that Wowhead (as well as other sites using the network) have seen instances where advertisements caused malware warnings when people have visited the site. Every time this has happened, the people responsible for ads have shut off the ad network responsible. In extreme cases, we've completely shut off all ads on our site until we were assured that the bad ads had been purged. As you can imagine, we get just as angry as you guys when stuff like this happens (maybe even moreso because it makes us look bad for something we don't control) and we let the ad networks know. :)
The Wowhead Client stores my Wowhead account username and password. What is it doing with that information?
When you upload data, the client logs you into Wowhead via the back-end so it can credit you with the upload and put your character data in the right place. This is also how we block bad data: if a Wowhead user has been proven to be uploading data from a private server, we block the user from uploading. This block happens when the client sends the user information to the site.
The Wowhead Client stores my World of Warcraft character information to send to Wowhead. Does it store anything else?
Nope! It only stores information related to the character.
Your World of Warcraft account name and password are never scraped or stored by the Wowhead Client.
We're just like you guys: we don't want the other members of our staff knowing our usernames and passwords, either. :)
How do I know what I'm uploading?
In the Windows version, you can double-click on a file in the upper list to show its contents in the built-in data viewer. Holding shift while opening the file will sort rows by ID.
How do I upload data on a Mac?
Since a fresh install of MoP does not include a realmlist.wtf file, Mac users will have to create this file in order for the Client to realize users are connecting to a valid Blizzard realm. Thanks to

Paste in the appropriate "set realmlist" entry from SnorkelPop's post above, on a blank line, with no spaces at the beginning or end of the line (extra blank lines above/below aren't a problem, though):

The realmlist.wtf has a hidden .txt extention that needs to be removed for the Client to recognize it as valid.
Go to Finder --> Preferences --> Advanced --> 'Show all filename extensions'.
Navigate to your World of Warcraft folder and find

Only if you are the one who loots corpses (i.e. if you are the Master Looter).
As this is a standalone program that runs along with WoW, does it violate the third party program rule that Blizzard has in the ToS/ToU?
Not at all. Simply put, the client downloads an add-on to your WoW addons folder and just uploads from there when you're done playing. Remember, Wowhead is part of the official fansite program – it wouldn't be if it was against any of Blizzard's policies.
How do I uninstall the application?
The Client is a standalone app, and as such doesn't have an installer nor an uninstaller. All you have to do is to delete the following files manually:

The Wowhead Looter addon: World of Warcraft\\Interface\\AddOns\\+Wowhead_Looter
The Wowhead Client is having trouble uploading my data. What can I do?
Some antivirus programs seem to want to block the Wowhead Client from uploading, most notably AVG and Kaspersky. If you're using AVG, you may be able to work around the issue by deactivating LinkScanner. If not, or if this doesn't work, we are working on a more permanent solution to this issue internally.
Here is a user-submitted solution by Yorotiba that does not require deactivating LinkScanner:
NET LIMITER 4
, install and reboot.
1) Start Net Limiter
2) Launch and start uploading to Wowhead.
3) Look at Wowhead in Net limiter and even click on + and + # reveal the IP process, right click on the IP that downloads only visible to those numbers (which shows your download speed) #
4) Choose "SHOW INFO"
5) Copy the address: "REMOTE ADDRESS" in AVG.
Go to Tools -> LinkScanner -> advanced settings -> add address connection Wowhead.
In the white box below exclude # Host / IP / domain. enter each entry on a new line #
