It seems that Blizzard finally did away with having to learn this from a recipe. The Iron, Mithril, and Thorium spike recipes were hard-to-find world drops, and BC's Felsteel version required rep grinding with a rather unpopular faction when it came to 5-manning regular/heroic dungeons. This version only requires a visit to a local Blacksmith to learn, which should have been the case when it came to learning shield spikes.

I wonder why they didn't think of this earlier, though.

It says requires level 70, but does this mean item level or player level? I'm 66 but just got the Lichen shield from Sporeggar, which is a level 91 item. Can I use this? If it requires level 70 player, can I have a 70 buy this and then apply it to my shield in a trade?

Alright, I can verify that YOU CAN USE THIS IF YOU'RE NOT 70. I bought this yesterday as a 66 paladin after recently getting my Sporeggar lichen guard. When I clicked it to use it, it said I wasn't high enough of a level. I thought bummer, player has to be 70.

Luckily, I was able to give the enchant item to my 72 friend. He was able to apply it to the Lichen Guard (which is a shield with item level 91) through trade. So if you want this enchant, you need only a level 70 or higher shield and a level 70 or higher friend.

This is a very neat item; however, it seems a little useless for threat in Wrath. Tanks are already doing so much treat that extra is just redundant. A tank that is raiding(or even just doing 5 mans) would get a lot more use out of stamina or defense to shield.

I can 100% confirm you CANNOT attach this to a low level shield.

My level 70 druid tried to put this on a level 43 BOE shield and it said "item is too low level"

Waste of money, but comments here had several people saying the wrong thing, that it's only the casters level, not the item level.

I thought I'd test that theory. In short no.
Running backwards through Gnomregan not attacking anything just spaming all my shield block abilities, Recount gave me the folowing data:
Titanium Shield Spike: _Count 835 - Dmg 49,897 - Hit 44-79 - Avg 60 - #835 Total 100%
Damage Shield: ______Count 930 - Dmg 138,612 - Hit 105-213 - Avg 125 - #746 80.2%

That's strange, "Hit 44-79" and the item says 45-67. So it has done both more, and less damage than it says it should. Doing less is understandable as i expect it's physical damage, and so it's probably reduced by armor (dont quote me on that), but doing 12 more damage than it says it should? Beats me...

Yep, that's right. The spike does damage but it's mitigated by armor, so when it did 44, it's because it hit with no damage buffs, but mitigated by armor. The higher values are when the player had some kind of damage buff.

I'm not convinced this is, in any way, useful at level 80...or even 70, for that matter.

Running some quick numbers, assuming you are defense capped with ~11% chance to be missed...you'd need something like a 95% chance to block a mob swinging every 1 second for this to boost your threat by 2% @ 2500 TPS. Those absurdly high figures are equivalent to the glove enchant, which, I believe, the general consensus on that enchant is, it's also pretty useless – in Wrath.

Now, using realistic numbers, say 20% shield block…it’s going to boost your threat by ~0.43%. I came to this figure, for those that would like to double check my thought process, by taking a ridiculously long fight (to reduce significant rounding errors), of 24 hours (86400 seconds), assuming a mob swinging every 1 second (which is fast, so best case scenario here). The mob would have 86,400 swings at you, about 9,158 would be misses (5% innate + 5.6% defense), so the mob would really have 77,242 swings that could land. 15,448 of those would be blocked @ 20% shield block, an average damage of 60 (as shown in another post) would come to 926,880 damage. I don’t think this damage is modified by stance, so I’ll assume it is 1 damage is 1 threat. At a relatively low threat output of 2,500 TPS, you’d have done 216,000,000 threat through abilities and white damage. 926,880 threat to 216 million is 0.429%…insignificant. The slower the mob swings, the less threat it does…the higher your TPS gets, the additional damage becomes less significant. For example, 1.5 second swings @ 3500 TPS is a 0.204% boost.

If this stacked with another enchant, it’d be mediocre…but, as it is, it’s a joke.

i can confirm that this can not be put on Petrified Lichen Guard through trade with a higher level not sure about other shields but dont bother trying on this one

If your like me, and have an alchemist handy that can transmute saronite to titanium, it requires exactly 1 stack of saronite ore to make.

Due to the numbers involved and lack of scaling this is never going to be a raid worthy enchantment. Not at the bleeding edge at least but I don't think anybody is claiming that.

Like all effects you should appraise them laterally as well as empirically. The nice thing about this mechanic is that it does it's damage passively without you having to do anything. It's got no mental overhead and that's what makes it appealing, especially for grinding situations or if you're lazy. It synergises well with other reflective abilities (Thorns, Lightning Shield, Ret Aura) and things like bombs from Engineering and AoE strategies in general. It's a fairly niche item, but is effective in the right situations.

It's great they finally made them accessible. It used to always be a pain finding these. Were the previous versions all moved to trainers too?

Due to changes to Titanium Plating (up to 81 block value from 40), this shield spike is inferior for threat for a warrior tank. With Damage Shield, the plating allows you to deal an extra 16 damage on a block or when hit. Considering that your average prot warrior will block about 15-25% of the time, and will be hit around 15%-25% of the time, the plating is just better than the spike. What about Shield Block, you ask? Yes, it does give the spike a lot higher a chance to activate, but it also doubles the damage dealt from the Plating. When you factor in the fact that the plating increases Shield Slam damage, the Plating just wins out.
