Collected all 50 in few hours... some of them were in pretty distant and random places like the one in Maraudon. In LBRS and BRD I killed no mobs and didn't even use my mage invisiblity.
Alliance towns were a bit tricky ones except Darnassus because it was kinda empty. In Ironforge I got killed three times and in Stormwind only once, because the quards can be outrunned more easily there. Using the Deeprun Tram between IF and SW is a nice experience for a horde-only player like me.

On my classic account toon, I've been able to accumulate 49 coins this year (2010). In other words; one coin short of 50 Coins of Ancestry. This includes all elders of both Alliance and Horde, Eastern Kingdoms, Kalimdor and dungeons available. Gotta wait 'till next year, I guess!

Im lvl 80 blood elf hunter and havent got any rep at all lately, im revered with thunder, bilge, and darkspear and since im trying to get the albino drake i thought going after the coins would be an easy rep gain for all main factions, any1 know why i dont get any rep even tho it says 83 per coin for me? same with stonetalon quests, says i get for the horde but nu faction rep changes? :S

These coins can be picked up from Elders scattered throughout Azeroth and ~~Outland~~. To get one simply locate an Elder and speak to him/her. For a detailed guide on how to find Elders/coins and the entire Lunar Festival, check out Wowheads Lunar Festival Guide

Actually it's two different lanterns depending on faction, kind of like the pet from Enchanting:

Lunar Lantern for the Alliance.

Festival Lantern for the Horde.

Just curious though but are there ways outside of the first 4 or 5 quests and the elders to get the coins? Perhaps blizz adding on Dailies may help? i find myself short on the coins and have gotten all the elders than bought what was needed for the ach and my engineer

There's a total of 84 coins to gather this year (2012-2016), with the addition of 9 from the Cata Elders.
That's also 84 Enveloppe rouge porte-bonheur and 6300 (6930 ~~with the guild perk~~ as a human) rep.

If you're planning to But The companions and sell them on Neutral AH's , Just grind 50 coins with an Alt then Buy the companion send it to your main :P Might take a while for grinding though but I'd say it's worth the gold.

I used 2 Alliance alts to farm Lunar Lanterns, one for my main and one for the AH. I wasn't watching but it couldn't take more than 2.5 hours or so of flying around. The one on the AH sold much quicker than I thought, for about 16k. Mind you I'm on Thaurissan so there's not many Alliance characters, or even people with Alliance alts. I'm thinking of getting another one and holding on to it for 6 months or so to see if I can sell it for a fortune.

Moral of the story: there's gold in them thar coins!

If you wish to go around the world and talk to elders for coins, but don't wish to be clicking trough their dialogs, you can run this script and it will do the talking for you -just click to open the dialog and it will finish the quest for you! NB: Remember to /reload or relog once finished, otherwise you will also be doing this for other quests, so beware.

You get this coin from talking to an elder and bowing to them it is a instant quest gives just under 10 gold, and it goes towards an achivment it is worth doing them all because then you will get the title "elder" doesn't take long ans it is also 1 of the World event achivment needed for the Voilet Proto Drake.

These coins are available from Elders during the Lunar Festival World Event. This year it runs from February 1-15, 2015.

Each Elder has a quest available that grants 1 Pièce des ancêtres and 1 Enveloppe rouge porte-bonheur. Each Enveloppe rouge porte-bonheur contains an Pierre de lune des anciens, a BoP item that will put a beam of light on a specific spot for 3 minutes (handy for marking areas in raids or dungeons!)

Pièce des ancêtres is unusual in that it persists in you bags year round (and does not expire and disappear like a lot of other holiday currencies). As such, you can save some for the following year. Note that it is not a currency that appears in your currency tab, but is an item that stacks to 100 and takes a bag slot.

It should be noted that it should read as a possible 84, as a bulk not tagged red on maps are in horde/alli towns next to flight masters so chances of getting in and out un harmed/dismounted are slim. Just a warning to thoes like my self that feel clear pve content shouldn't trick/force you in to pvp to complete.

I've summarized the complete list of elders with scripts for pasting with Paste addon which gives TomTom waypoints IF you haven't completed the associated quest, aka recieved the coin. So no more looking for which elders you've done and flying the whole loop to check for that. Just paste the whole list and you'll have the ones where you can get a coin.

I would advise the Add-on Candy Buckets, it puts a coin icon on elder location/Hallowend candy bucket and a few other event npcs.

Much easier then using Tomtom and no need to waste macro space.

How to Quickly Farm Pièce des ancêtres for Transmog Items (NOT PETS OR TOYS)

Repeating Préservation lunaire on druid trial characters is the fastest way to acquire the Lunar Festival cosmetic items. There are currently 10 cosmetic items that cost a total of 130 Pièce des ancêtres.

Préservation lunaire rewards 25x Pièce des ancêtres. Because transmogs are account-wide and each item costs 25x Pièce des ancêtres or less, you can simply complete the quest on a trial character, buy an item you want, then repeat on a new trial character until you have all the transmogs. This is much faster than trying to acquire all the cosmetic items on one character. Then after, do the four year-round perennial transmog quests for crowns all at once.

Lunar Festival toys and heirloom upgrades cannot be acquired by trial characters. You can use trial characters to buy the pets, but you'll need more than 25x Pièce des ancêtres, meaning you'll need to acquire the additional coins from Elders.

Walkthrough

Create a non-allied race druid class trial character, enter world.
Use Carte de reconnaissance : Les conséquences du Cataclysme to unlock the Nordrassil flight path.* Use Hearthstone.**
- If you do not have this toy, Hearthstone** 🡒 Stormwind/Orgrimmar portal to Mount Hyjal 🡒 Unlock the Nordrassil flight path.*
- Open spellbook, add Marche du rêve to your action bar, cast it.
- Take Moonglade portal (map of portals). Pick upPréservation lunaire from Myraël Lunefleur.
- Go to moonwell #1 in Moonglade, use extra action button.
- Fly to and do the same at Moonwells #2-6 in Mount Hyjal 🡒 Felwood 🡒 Ashenvale x2 🡒 Stonetalon Mountains.
- Dreamwalk 🡒 Feralas 🡒 Fly to moonwell #7.

Unlocking Perennial (Year-Round) Crown Transmogs

After you have bought all four crowns on trial characters, do the four quests to allow the crowns to be transmogged year-round. Once one character has purchased a crown, the perennial unlock quest for that crown is available to all characters on the account (but only during Lunar Festival). Save yourself some time flying around and do all four quests at once, on one character:

Talk to Myraël Lunefleur again to pick up the four quests for the crowns.
Complete the quests using Dreamwalk, Hearthstone 🡒 city portals, etc. to get around.

I expect Blizzard will probably "fix" this in the future so that trial characters can't acquire these cosmetic items.

* The Emerald Dreamway portal to Mount Hyjal does not seem to work for trial characters. You will need the Nordrassil flight path unless you wait for your Hearthstone cooldown and use the portal to Mount Hyjal in your faction's capitol. Map of Emerald Dreamway portals.
** Dreamwalk will not work until you leave the class trial scenario.

I used information from Treborlock's post to organize this list because I was infuriated when I realized I had to go back to the places I had been right next to because they had not been listed on the continent when I made my travel route.

Remember, some zones need to be reverted to their old timeline, like Silithus, Uldum and Blasted Lands. Locate Zidormi (chat bubble on your map) to change times.

Hi all, I've fed all the coordinates for pretty much everything into a special HandyNotes plugin AddOn - to save all of you from the tedium. Like all my other AddOns it has the bells and whistles for customisation and tracking. I hope you find it useful - it's been a popular download so far :)

To be sure... every possible Coin location is included. Likewise every flower location for acquiring the "Crown of ..." cosmetics. Detailed dungeon walkthroughs are included too!

I'm not 100% sure on this, but I think if you got coins from the dragon isles elders last year, you can't get them again this year. I haven't bothered with them this year since I did it all last year, but I noticed there's no ! quest from the dragon isles elders for me.
