Excellent for leveling up Herbalism quickly, and effectively.

Just camp around the East Sactum and you'll find ~4 bushels that respawn every 5 minutes. You can start harvesting right when you train the skill.

This is super, if not excellent for a RP Blood Elf.
With herbalism it is almost your blood elf duty to have lots of stacks of this stuff and use it to control your addiction to magic.
Also sells for a nice lump of cash to other potential Blood Elves who are eager to withstand their lust for magic.
An idea is to stand behind a rock in front of Karazhan on a Saturday evening and wait. Whisper each blood elf that might pass about "ways to control the hunger". And make him spend all he's money on drugs so he can be high for a full raid night,
there might be money in this people.

This may be useful for lvl 19 caster/healer twinks actually, since it does stack with any buff or food. 10 extra spell damage/healing would make the twink a little bit stronger, just be sure to rebuff with this before it wears outand the debuff comes.

The length of time of the withdrawal varies early on, as it grows through use. I think it starts at 10 minutes, and increases by 5 each use until perhaps 20 minutes. Doesn't go very far, but it is similar to resurrection sickness in this way, except it is not based on level.

I've been using this stuff on a regular basis since BC came out, from Gruul all the way to Kil'jaeden and now to Sarth +3. 10 Spellpower is still 10 Spellpower, any Blood Elf Spellcaster would be doing themselves a disservice by not using Bloodthistle if they are trying to min/max themselves.

I'm not sure if this is entirely relevant, but as an herbalist I farmed a ton of this while leveling in Eversong Woods. Enough that my supply has lasted me until about level 33. I've noticed that sometimes, even when I have not consumed bloodthistle recently, I will get the withdrawal debuff.

I'm not sure if this is some hidden game mechanic related to my prolonged use of it or if it's just a bug of some sort.

something messed up the other day... when i was lagging REALLY bad, I tried some Bloodthistle and it wouldn't show as consumed, so I tried right clicking more and more... after a while, suddenly I HAD the buff AND debuff :(

As of 4.0 the withdrawl debuff has been changed. It is now a full 5 int penalty for 20 minutes. I guess they realized the spirit isn't a penalty anymore with low level regen changed and with 2/3rds of the casters not even caring about spirit as a stat.

If you aren't a herbalist and don't want to buy any, you can get Bloodthistle Petals from Lord Saltheril's party if you have completed the quest he gives you: The Party Never Ends (and still have the invitation). It does the same thing, including giving you the debuff if you don't keep using it. You can only have five at a time in your backpack, unlike the herb, though; if you don't want to get Bloodthistle Withdrawal you will have to keep coming back which I guess kind of fits....

This is a reference to Tobacco not weed.
Weed makes you mellow and dumb you down while its effects last.

The nicotine in Tobacco hits your brain and makes you more alert and active
Bloodthistle has the same effect it increases your intellect but through it's arcane properties not nicotine.

Could also be a reference to the many fantasy settings that have pipe smoking, would be awesome if it had a pipe emote.
Maybe even add tobacco for the other races.

So, I rolled a Blood Elf today and learned herbalism. Picking Bloodthistle has not given a single skill-up, and the consumable no longer seems to give any benefit (the buff appears, but according to the character pane has no effect), though the 'withdrawal' remains and does work as stated. I don't know when Bloodthistle was so crushingly nerfed, but I'm surprised not to see any comments about it here. Could this really be a recent thing, or possibly (highly unlikely) a bug?

EDIT: Mystery solved: it does give a minor boost, but the character pane no longer breaks down what spellpower is your base, and what is from items and buffs.

If you are not a Blood Elf, you can herb these and get classic herbalism skill, but nothing lootable comes from the node. Blood Elves still get the item.

I'm fairly sure it used to be lootable by other races also at some point, just not usable.
