I'm a herbalist - found these in all high level herbs all over outland.
Never found one in Golden Sansam or Liferoot @ Netherstorm Eco-Domes.
I needed about 30 herb nodes to get all 8 - so roughly 25% drop chance for me.

I got about a 25-30% droprate while skinning in Nagrand.

This quest's gonna be really easy for skinners and probably mildly annoying for miners IMO.

For miners:

These drop off all TBC nodes (Fel Iron, Adamantite, Rich Adamantite, Khorium). It is possible to get more than one residue per mining node, although you're limited to only one per hit.

EDIT: I've managed to get up to three residues from a single deposit so far. Completely luck based, but it happens. Great news for miners.

The Residue drops off any kind of Outland vein, herb, or skinnable mob. The drop rate appears to be around 20-25%, and the items are considered quest items, thus can't pile them up in your bank for future dailies.

Great drop rate off of the Wrath Hounds in BEM. Did it when I got knocked off of my mount doing the Ogri'la dailies.

The drop rate seems to be pretty terrible off Adamantite in Nagrand for me.

I'm not complaining because I'm getting payed an extra 17g to go farm ore, but it seems as though it does take some time to complete like the Netherwing gathering quests.

They Best be given some more bank space,iv'e gotten nearly 3 stacks of herbs to get 8 residue..and ya can already notice the price drop for herbs in the Ah ,because of this daily!!

Since my initial question has been downrated, I assume that it's safe to say that this item is not obtainable by mining or herbing the corpses of creatures. I killed upwards of twenty earth elementals in Nagrand and didn't receive any residue from mining their corpses.

Skinning is probably the fastest way of gathering the Nether Residue, killing Bull Clefthoof's next to Garadar in Nagrand, it only took me about 8 minutes to get 8 of them, and you get Thick Clefthoof at the same time, good also with Wind Serpents or Nether Dragons.

I'm a Herbalist and combined this quest with 'Mana Berries' from Cooking and 'Sunfury Attack plans'. When i'd finished my quest i had 22 Netherbloom which shows a pretty decent drop rate. Even luckier for me, half of the herbs had a Fel Lotus in :-)

My impression from testing is that NW ledge pollen nodes do not drop this; I have not yet tested nethercite ore; does anyone know definitively whether or not the NW gathering nodes can drop these?

I've got 1 Nether Residue from a Ragveil after farmig aroud 20 of them. So not recomended to gather these for the quest. Got most of Mana Thistle and Nightmare Vine.

When I did this on Isle of Quel'Danas I got 1 from Ever mine I found. I don't know it is just luck or 100% drop rate there ( Viens are very rar there seens it is like a horde of people there 24/7)

My main (herbalist) has collected residues from Mana Thistles found on the Isle of Quel'Danas. And Koffein right above me says you can get them from ore veins there too. (I can't think of anything there that you're able to skin, but maybe I'm forgetting something?)

In general, it seems the higher the skill needed to pick the herb, the greater the chance of it dropping a Nether Residue. Mana Thistle, Netherbloom, and Nightmare Vine all drop it every 2 or 3 nodes I collect, while Felweed and Dreaming Glory often take 8 or 10 nodes to drop a single residue.

Unfortunately 'herb' type nodes from quests do not have the residue. So if you were, for example, planning to do the "Manalicious" Cooking Quest where you collect Mana Berries, I can say definitively that out of 15 collections there was not a single residue dropped.

I'm pretty sure you can't get these from herbing the giant trees in Skettis. I herbed 14 and didn't get a single drop. However, it could just be bad luck.

This is going to sound kind of weird but I'm just doing this quest on my herbalist atm and I noticed that the herbs which have the residue in them make sort of a humming (not sure how else to describe it) type noise when you just stand next to them. /shrug

Ok when wow head says Nether Residue dropps from thos things its not true the only way to get them is

"Bonus drop from herbalism, mining, or skinning in Outland. Early reports indicate only herbs, veins (or deposits), or skinnable mobs may yield this substance."

For the first time while in Zangarmarsh I looted one of these things off of a Flame Cap.
I would NOT recommend trying to get them from Zangarmarsh though because in my many hours spent their while with the quest and this is the first one i have looted.

OK, I may be completely wrong but I'm getting the distinct impression that the likelihood of a drop is at least partially based off the skill required to skin/herb/mine.

I've been doing this quest every day since 2.4 came out on three different toons - a skinner, a herbalist & a miner.

The skinner rarely gets a drop on 60 mobs (require 300 skill to skin), about a 25% droprate on 65's (require 325) and about a 50% droprate from 70 mobs (350 skill).

I've found I rarely get a drop out of Fel Iron (req 300 skill) on my miner, but will generally get at least one drop out of Adamantite Ore (req 325) & quite frequently get two out of Rich Admantite (req 350).

Ditto for the herbalist when comparing Fel Weed (300) to Netherbloom (350).

Hypothesis aside, of all the professions this is definitely most annoying for herbalists... skinners can kill things quickly & on demand (the quest is virtually free money/rep for skinners), miners get somewhere between 2 & 6 chances of getting a drop for every node they find (given the competition for nodes it's not brilliant, but not bad)... whereas herbalists only get one chance for every node they find (and maybe it's just my server, but there are an awful lot of herbalists farming the 'high end' herbs out there...).

In short: Go to Netherstorm or Shadowmoon Valley. Just not on my server, 'k? I'm farming there =)

You can get them from skinning the ravager type things on the road between Hellfire and Zangar. Easy kills.

For skinners who are looking to make some extra money while doing this quest, I reccomend the Nether Rays and Phase Hunters in Netherstorm, to pick up some motes of mana while completing this. If you're doing the other Shattered Sun dailies you'll already be in the area to get the Sunfury Attack plans.

The Black Morass wing of Caverns of Time, while technically in Azeroth, allows you to skin Nether Residue off the various Jaguars and Crocolisks in the area. It comes with an added bonus of being completely deserted if you choose to go in your own personal instance.

For herbalists:
Since Zangarmarsh is gonna give you ZILCH for nether residue at the moment, my favorite place to farm these is the Eco-Domes in Netherstorm. I may have been lucky, but the spawns for herbs seemed relatively close together and there are barely any aggressive mobs. Just hop on your flying mount and circle around the Stormspire or Eco-Dome Midrealm for easy nether residue. ^^

Hereby confirming that Nether Residue can be gathered from Ragveil in Zangarmarsh.
Though it seems very rare that you'll get it from Ragveil, atleast open it to check, if you don't want to have the herb itself.

Don't know if this is just luck or something.. but on Rich Adamantite Vein I received 7 in a row with 7 ore, 100% chance of the drop. Could be they upped the chance of getting this in patch 2.4.1

Wowhead statistic tells it is low, because not everyone who was minning, skinning or gathering was on this quest.

Sadly, you can not skin Outland critters for the Nether Residue, even if the quest says that it's contained in "every beast native to Outland". That'd be too easy...

These also drop in Isle of Quel'danas. I mined a Rich Adamantite Deposit, and got all eight for the quest by only mining on Isle of Quel'danas. The droprate seems to be slightly higher, but that might be because the nodes are closer to eachother.

It may be coincidence, but if not, it's a great tip for skinners: For the past week or so I've been getting a 100% skin rate of these from the Ravagers at Razorthorn Rise (the area where you do Rediscovering Your Roots.)

What makes it even easier there is the fact that you get a little help from a tamed Ravager if you are indeed working on the afformentioned quest.

As of 3.0.2, these seem to have a 100% drop rate. At least for myself, a skinner, at least. Three days I've done this daily, and every time I've gotten the drop.

Nether residue has 100% drop rate when skinned.. idk for others (mining, herb). And hav only skinned Clefthoofs and has dropped evrytime since patch

I would recommend that all Miners/Herbalists who plan on doing this quest regularly should install the Gatherer mod (or one with similar functions). For those who don't know, Gatherer records the locations of specific nodes (Chests, Herbs, Ore Deposits; if you can find it, Gatherer can mark it) on your map, making it much easier to farm materials later on; better still, nodes that your party/guild members find are recorded on your map as well! There is also a "filtering" function, which allows you to remove certain nodes types from your map (i.e, if you're an Herbalist, you can block out all of the mineral deposits that your guild's Warriors and Paladins have been finding). Why waste time running around for a slim chance of finding a node, when you can simply check your map to see where you KNOW they can spawn.

Heres my little piece of advice ( maybe not advice, but it worked for me ) ;
Its obvious what to do for skinner, herbalists, it appears netherbloom has a good drop rate, and as for miners, the toughest to get, head over to the isle of quel'danas and look for adamantite veins. It may seem like a hassle to go all the way to the isle and then back, but trust me, I did this and got all my residues within 5-10 min. The isle is fairly small, so all you have to do is run around and do your other dailies while looking for veins. I had good luck and found a rich adamantite vein, I got about 5-6 residues out of it.

Nether Residue can also be skinned off Razorthorn Hatchlings.
From what I gathered, I got 1 off everyone I skinned, so the drop rate may be 100%.

Hi, I am miner, almost every deposit contain residue, usually 2-4 so it is easy to get it.
