Interestingly, Diatomaceous earth is actually a material used in the manufacture of explosives (which is the goal of this quest, breaking the giant out of jail).

It is composed of the fossilized remains of diatoms, a type of hard shelled algae. It's also used as a filtration aid, as a mild abrasive, as a mechanical insecticide, as an absorbent for liquids, as cat litter, and as an activator in blood clotting studies. As it is also heat-resistant, it can be used as a thermal insulator.
