You get to keep it after completing the quest but it has no further use.

You can finish this quest by simply collecting the items in the chests without using this thing. Using it while currently on the quest causes some elementals to be summoned which will help you fight, but also summons more ogres. People who don't use this while in a party or whatever will still have it in their bag and the NPC won't retrieve it when the quest is over. It's safe to destroy afterwards.

From what I gather, this item is no longer available. The quest chain has been changed somewhat over several patches and "wherever" the agate came from is no longer in-game.

(For the new to WoW, the original quest chain was a pain. Many just did the quest naked, died, rezzed next to the chest, died, rezzed next to the next chest, etc. until all the items were picked up.The quest has been nerfed so it's actually doable without much effort/bother.)
