This trinket adds: (at L80)

1.68% avoidance from defense (3*0.4%*14.03)
2.2% avoidance from parry rating

so in total 3.88% of avoidance which is subject to diminishing returns. It doesn't have any stamina (101 hp5 will hardly help any tank doing ToC and anything past it) but it does seem decent if you want to build an avoidance tank set. Keep in mind it does almost nothing vs the spell damage. Alternatively, you could go with Eltrigg's Oath (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=47882) which also has a proc. +15 fire resistance doesn't seem that exciting either.

P.S. To change the rating calculation for L80 click on it (inside parenthesis here on Wowhead) then just type level 80 and it will recalculate it for you.

Well if it works in combat like most really old hp5 items did this would equal:

60sec/5sec=12ticks per min

12*101= 1212HP gained per minute.

Now that assumes you aren't already at full when you get the "tick" but over a 5 min raid fight that's a little over 6k "healing."

Not a bad perk for the large amount of parry/defense on it.

Personally, this is a trinket I'm rather eager about getting. No, it's certainly not ideal, especially in terms of progression fights, but I think people are somewhat underestimating it's value. Before this, there were only 2 trinkets with defense on them (correct me if I'm wrong here), Seal of the Pantheon and Repelling Charge.

When wearing my frost resist set, I need to use Seal of the Pantheon (I never got Repelling Charge) to stay over 540 defense. With the Icebane gear, I already lose a lot of threat and avoidance as well. This trinket would replace the seal for my defense needs, and offer something that gives back some of the avoidance I lose from Icebane. On top of that, there's the hp5 which isn't very significant, but none the less it's an added bonus, perhaps useful for soloing older content or such.

Overall, it's not a trinket I'd be using all the time, but I can definitely see the value in it and would like to get it.

Originally, pre BC and BC, pally tanks had to stack spell power and stam, and actually ended up with alot of spell caster PvP gear. This was one of the best trinkets a pally tank could get pre BC due to the lack of being able to stack enough defense.

Since then, obviously pally tanking has come a long, long way. Most tanks with a gear score of 2600+ won't have defense gemmed, nor will they have many items enchanted with defense, because the items already have alot of defense on them to begin with.

Whats great, as already stated, about this trinket, is that it allows any tank to still have avoidance and enough defense when wearing resistance gear. That alone makes it a great trinket to store away for certain Uld fights (which, we don't even use resist gear anymore, but it's easier on the healers), and possibly upcoming fights in Icecrown.

Is it BiS, nope, far from it, but it's certainly a trinket to grab if you have the chance.

You guys are looking at the hp per 5 all wrong. Whatever healing it does is gravy. In acctuality it's an additional means of threat. On already very nice avoidance trinket.

This is a good trinket, and some wise words from a wise man, good Tanks have more sets than they know what to do with. In my case, it's trinkets, this trinket is a static upgrade from Valor Medal or Brawler's Souvenir, as their proc's outclass this trinkets avoidance my a lot separately and put together.

Those saying it sucks and you would lose EH, are partially right, if that is your feelings, keep stam trinkets for EH and keep your various Avoidance trinkets for survival.

Overall, I like it, nostalgia, upgrade from my Medal/Tooth, some nice defense assisting in gemming, and the HP5 is some nice icing.

I am a little confused about people who think there is ANY value to this trinket, whatsoever. I think Blizz forgot to add about 150 stat points to it, lol. (Considering the stats on the same quest reward for the other classes). I have to assume we've got a lot of people posting who aren't tanking end-game instances where 245 loot drops as the norm.

First, to be running Onyxia 25 (especially as a tank) you are going to have 2400 gear if not higher. You're going to be defense capped, so you will not want to gear defense at the expense of other mitigation and avoidance stats. So you should just "ignore" the defense on this item except if it comes with high levels of other buffs.

Heals in 245 gear raids are all about topping you off with 10,000+ direct heals and 2,000hps HoTs. 20 hits per second are unnoticeable and would have zero practical impact on the raid. You will either be full health (in which case this trinket would just overheal), or you'll be down 15,000k, and this trinket would be worthless because you've got 25,000 in heals incoming from your healers - it would have zero impact whether it healed or not. Quite frankly, tanks running this instance should be running raid buffed with over 50K hit points - which means this trinket would take 42 MINUTES to heal you to full if you were just sitting on your butt.

And for those people who say it is just additional threat - give me a break. You think 20 hps is going to add enough threat to make a difference holding aggro against a 2400 geared rogue? LOL!

If you're a druid tank, parry is worthless, so this trinket is even worse for druids - I'm not sure you would notice if you had it geared versus leaving the slot empty.

The +15 fire resistance is the same buff you can get off the level 60 trinket! Meanwhile the same boss drops a 245 ring with +30 to ALL RESISTS, +115 stamina, +800 armor, and +55 dodge. Which would you rather have? As level 245 loot they are supposed to be of comparable value for their slot.

I think you all are being very generous with a very poor piece of loot that is DEFINITELY not comparable to other tank trinkets out there that are much easier to obtain like:

Parry, dodge AND defense are on diminishing returns...

Can you explain what is arbitrary considering i underestimated onyxia blood and overestimated eitrigg's? If there is something arbitrary in my calculations, its maxdps.com tankpoint system. They do take in count diminishing returns to def rating, and def rating is still a little better for survival than parry rating at defense minimum(its not a cap, its a minimum to tank raid bosses, at most its a soft cap)

You miss the point on the 101 hp5, at WORSE it can be considered like 9 extra stamina, and you wouldnt spit on an extra 9 stamina now would you? The thing is blizzard considered it like a very minor buff on the trinket, they consider it worth 4-5 tankpoints if they were using maxdps, and it's clearly worth a little more than that, so not only its not useless, its better than an extra 4-5 parry/dodge/def rating you would get if they swapped it.

Well obviously you are a bear tank, there's no question that it's worthless for you, parry rating is the major buff on it and its useless for you and you get more stamina from items... but for people who get normal stamina from gear and do have parry its not a worthless trinket, you might be biased because you are a bear tank.

You make 3 errors with your 3 - statements.
1- Def rating should not be discounted. It gives a lot of avoidance even at def 540. The tankpoints maxdps gives CALCULATES DIMISHING RETURN AND TAKES IT INTO ACCOUNT.
2- Not everyone are bear tanks, 3/4th of the classes who can tank do have parry. OF COURSE its useless for bears.
3- I think your talking about the 101 hp5 buff here, but you miss the point. at worse it is 9 stamina, and blizz considered its worth at 4-5 stamina. 1 stamina is one tank point. would you take 188 stam trinket(not far from 170 sta trinket from brewfest...which i always tought add too much stamina for ilevel 200) or 3797(if 101 hp5 is worth 5 stam in itemization)-4747(if its worth 4 sta) hp5 trinket? That would be like drinking a runic health pot every 5 seconds. A lot better than 1900 hp imo(then again, if you are a bear you would say 188 stam gives you more health but im not even talking about bears. they have a different way to gear.)

I would say one of the best uses for this is if you are a DK tank and have a Anti-Magic tank spec as offspec for magic fights and want gear for it

Parry is one the best stat for Anti-magic DK tanks cos of http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=49497 so the massive parry on this will help a decent amount

This is a pretty unique item. Non bears would be mad to take either of the other reward choices on offer.

I don't understand why people discredit the high +defense rating on this trinket. It will put a tank already at the defense soft cap WAY above it, which will then allow them to swap out any defense gems, enchants, or even gear for items with more stamina or avoidance stats.

A few things to keep in mind about this item.

1) For tanks that CAN parry, run this calculation. (Dodge% - 10) / (Parry% - 10) If the number is Greater than 1.88, you will get more out of parry. If the number is under 1.88, you will get more benefit out of dodge.

2) The incoming ICC raids will have a Radiance effect. Chill of the Throne will be reducing all tank dodge ratings by 20% against all mobs inside the ICC raid wings. Considering, once you get to ICC, you could easily be looking at 30-40% dodge ratings, you will be paying a heavy deficit in dodge DR. Adding defense rating and parry rating helps to increase an avoidance stat that ISN'T being plunged into oblivion. For block tanks, it also helps boost your block chance

The Hp5 is just a nostalgia effect. The fire resist REALLY isn't that important. It's just upgrading old items to ilvl 245 ratings. But when you need to start building up your parry rating thanks to the muck-up that Blizz managed to fall into with avoidance levels that forced ANOTHER raid-specific avoidance-sapping aura, it's definately a useful item.

Why are people quoting maxdps as if it was a definitive source here?

Defense does NOT have DR attached to IT.
The dodge and parry that it gives DO.

So yes, defense does hit DR of sorts, but not like people are claiming.
Block is not under DR and so that amount is always being improved by defense as advertised.

This item is not too bad, the HP/5 is not a major point and is obviously not going to be a massive game breaker. It will help the healers only slightly as the style of healing until Icecrown is "Spam heals and hope they don;'t die from 2 hits in a row before a heal hits." Icecrown will allow this trinket to do more as healing is going to be less about spamming and more about constant small damage that you have to be able to manage mana with.

First of all i would like to say that i dont think i would ever use this trink above one of the other much easier to get +hp trinks that are available.

After reading most of the posts here ive noticed that nobody has taken the miss chance you get from the defense into account and only reference the more common forms of avoidance. I personally am at the point where a large majority of my gear has both 60-70+ ratings of parry and dodge on every piece. It has come to the point where point for point defense rating is worth more than 2x the avoidance in miss chance alone than either parry or dodge. Plus when you add in blcok, parry, and dodge onto the miss it becomes (in my opinion as well as many other tanking forums) the best mitigation stat to stack.

I still think that hp trinks are more effective, because it doesnt matter how much avoidance you have, your still going to get hit .... frequently. However, this trinket does provide a lot more avoidance (for end game tanks with huge amounts of avoidance ratings more than not, though its still a more than decent trink for any tank) than people really give it credit for.

This trinket is awesome for Warrior tanks tanking adds on Anub'arak in Trial of the Grand Crusader, who are trying to get more Block Rating then gear provides. Therefore this is a must have trinket for ANY end game raiding warrior tank. However for those of you who will never see that fight, worry about the Hp5.

It seems as the healing part of this trinket does not work atm.
At least not for level 85's.

Was trying to use this when soloing Razorgore to get adds on me instead of him through healer aggro,
in addition to Blood Craze, but I saw no healing from it what so ever.

*Edit: It seems like the Purified Shard of the Flame also is broken on the healing department. Will try and get a GM comment in it.

It changed to:

Equip: Increases your parry by 129.
Equip: Increases your health regeneration by 101.

I don't know if this is Blizzard describing the same thing in a diffferent way or that it has been fixed to again work properly.

I think it has only recently been changed (as of 5.1) because i could swear it read the old description when i got it a few weeks before the patch. But i'm just guessing, i never gave it much attention as i gotten it for the parry :).

Edit: Now i think of it, 5.1 did bring the gear "upgrade" system and with it a lot of changes to the way item stats are displayed. I could be no more then the text that has been changed and not the workings of the trinket.
