Most likely a new Fossil archaelogy rare introduced in 4.1
Making a guess, the effect might be similar to that of Cuvée spéciale du seigneur du Givre, as in you become encased in an amber "ice block", with a short-duration buff (which you can click off) which makes you unable to move or act. Damage taken will likely cancel this effect.

Why does everything have to be a pop culture reference? Perhaps it may just be referring to the real-world phenomenon of finding insects (and other once-living things) encased in amber, which dates back to at least the Ancient Romans, predating both Fringe and Jurassic Park by a couple thousand years.

The presence of insects in amber was noticed by Pliny the Elder in his Naturalis Historia, and led him to theorize correctly that, at some point, amber had to be in a liquid state to cover the bodies of insects.

Indeed, that "amber with a bug in it" icon does look similar to another.

Just got this. Using this gives you a buff called "Trapped In Amber" which encases you in an amber block.

Sadly, but not surprisingly, this item doesn't work in battle grounds.

I ended up getting this on patch day. Neat little toy.

- Being that it's a common rare it shouldn't take people too long to to get it.

- You end up getting put in a scared/horrified position when you're encased in amber.

- You stay frozen for 5 minutes, but can click the buff off. (although why would you want to)

- Of course as tool tip says it has a 30 min CD.

I'm sure most of you have more common sense then I do, but just in case, you cannot use this item while moving. So don't jump off a cliff expecting to get frozen midair using this like I did, because it doesn't work :)

It has ~0.9 seconds cast time and cannot be used in battlegrounds or arena.

This was my 4th fossil solve after 4.1, you need 100 fossil fragments to do it, and it counts to Leur place est dans un musée !

Edit: I can confirm that you cant use this item while in combat.

I found out one or two things about the Ancient Amber. One of them is you can't use it in combat - I wanted to see if it had the same debuff removal effect as Iceblock - but no. The second thing, and what it doesn't tell you, is it has a 1 second cast time. So while I was about 1,000 feet above Winterspring, I thought I'd try and be clever, so I clicked it and was obviously dismounted - I wanted to see if it'd not let me die since I'd be encased in it. But, as you have probably guessed by now, you cannot use this while moving. So down I go, down down down...... dead. It's not really as good an object as I first thought it might be.

I have not seen this mentioned yet, but when you use this item, it places you in the amber block and shrinks you down to about 50% of your natural size.

Just a minor note.

If you log out while you have the 'Trapped in Amber' buff, when you log back in your character will still be trapped, but will be standing as normal rather than in the 'scared' emote.

After doing this on more than one logout, this does not appear to happen every time.

Unfortunately, Blizzard has also decided that using this item will remove any costumes you have on at the time. So you're not allowed to be creative and freeze yourself in the amber block as a Furbolg/Arakkoa/Whatever. :(

This reminds me of one of the early DragonLance books from the 80's that I read when I was a kid. The group got frozen in a crystal like this for decades in a dwarf mine; and the sketch illustration in the book kinda looked like this. The main character was a human who had a demon hand (because of what happened earlier) that wasn't affected by the crystal and he passed the time trying to catch bats with it. The other characters shifted their eyes to him and had looks of blame. Then weird things happened because after they were released from the spell, he was the same age as his daughter.

I am working on this project now and it seems to be a totally vanity item. Maybe it'd make for a funny screenshot on the LK throne.

A Beast Mastery hunter can pop Bestial Wrath while in the block. It will not break the block, however it will increase your size a little, about halfway between the 50% reduction and your origional size. It also turn the entire block bright red. I will try to get a screen shot loaded

ok, let's not be narrow minded here - this is an item that says, "i'm willing to be something MORE than just junk - I am living art"

So, you must consider the uses, however lame, however mindless, that can cause people to go "wtf?"

I'm willing to start the ideas, because this thread would be more useful to find ideas of HOW to use this work of art, such as:

Sneak into a major city as a rogue, right at a major thoroughfare, and opening up this amazing wonder.
Go to low level flight points and sit there, making lowbies scratch their head.
Play "find the amber" and test your archaeology skills with friends. Provide the archeologists with clues to find you in five minutes or less.
Make a mini amber henge. Think stone henge with amber. (i'm not that creative).
See if you can't have a druid push you off from some height and have you drop on someone below. Haven't tested this, but if it works...

there does not seem to be any way to cancel this effect once it has started... i used this in a dungeon once during a pause in the action.. when action resumed, i figured i could either /cancelaura or click on the debuff to remove it. neither worked.. they kicked me. :(

OK so I read thourh about fifty worthless comments that don't give any useful information unless I happen to care if this is item is a sci-fi reference or not. (It isn't, it's a REAL LIFE reference, so hard to believe in a fantasy MMO, right?)

All you need to know is you can not use this in combat, and this will NOT absorb damage. I believe those are the first two questions that should come to your mind when you get this item. Also, since someone bothered to claim you can't remove the buff, I'd like to say, you are wrong. You can remove it just like any other buff.

You will also get the title "Assistance Professor" since it's a rare artifact.

The icon reminds me of Jurassic Park, but what the item does reminds me of Fringe.

Just used this in a battleground. Not in combat, defending a tower. Was still in Amber when it ended...

I materialized right where I had been before the BG - high above Stormwind. Except I was tiny, not in amber, but still frozen.

And falling.

I landed on a rooftop, very, very dead.

So, after experiencing Dread Wastes, and spending some time with Klaxxi, I went back to Kalimdor to level Archaeology. I got this item and one thing came to mind: Klaxxi Paragons. If you look at the rough drawing including with the short summary of the item, it looks like a bug in the picture, but describes it has a human figure.

Being trapped in amber persists through logoff. The cooldown does not.
If you don't want to wait the 5 mins, you can simply click on the "Trapped in Amber" icon to be released.
I guess it might be one way to escape anything that's chasing you, but i haven't tried that yet.

Has anyone tried this in pvp? Lets say you hear a stealthy and you were guarding a flag in AB, and you pop this, would this would prevent you from getting sapped or ganked by a rogue... obviously you wouldnt use this in combat since its impossible to use during combat, but in preemptive measures, would it negate damage and/or CCs until dispelled?

I had found mine awhile back and hadn't used it, but going through my artifacts today I came across it and because of the description scared myself into believing that I'd sold off a pet or mount. In game I immediately searched through pets and mounts that came from professions but nothing jumped out so I came here and discovered this wonderful "toy"! I've been reading all the crazy suggestions and playing with it since! 8)

Lol! Just found out if you use this at the end of a battleground, and were mounted before the bg started, you will be freezed in amber on your mount when back from the bg. Yet another reason why I can't wait till brewfest to get my purple protodrake! 9 nights (or days?) of sleep left... I'm like a kid before xmas!

I was able to get the toy as a starter edition (who can only level their proffesions to 100) and yet I was able to get this toy despite this site saying the minimum skill to get it was 525.
