Xarantaur is named after Loremaster Xarantaur from the EU quest forum

It didden't surprise me that the Sons of the Storm gave him the honour of giving him eternal fame by making his character a NPC ingame.

He's one of the few players that written alot with Chris Metzen himself about the game and lore.

He's talking around inside a house filled with books, which seems to fit his character description as a Loremaster from the EU forums.

Xarantaur: Do you have a Story for me?/Ah yes, I have read of you, <Name>./I am Xarantaur, the Witness.

Tell me of yourself, Xarantaur. Why are you called The Witness?

Xaurantar: I was one of the first tauren druids, of the last generation taught by Shan'do Cenarius, before the legion, before the sundering, when the world was still young. Before everything changed.

While my brethren hunted great beasts, I hunted stories. I had been drawn to the druidic arts by this hunger, this lust for knowledge. For a time, that hunger was sated as I learned to talk to the trees, rocks, and beasts, and learned their stories.

But then, the time came when Cenarius walked among us no more and my brethren began to forget what he had taught us. I could not forget, though, and I still needed to learn more about our world.

So I said my farewells and travelled beyond the lands of my people.

Please, go on.

I wandered for the rest of my natural life in search of knowledge, seeing more wonder and meeting more strange and mysterious races then any of my people before me. I traveled across the length and breadth of ancient Kalimdor until there was no more to see, no new lands across the horizon.

Yet... there was still so much I did not know as I felt my final journey approaching and I wept for the things I would never know.

As I fell, my life at an end, that is when the found me.

They?

The Bronze Dragonflight. They snatched me from the brink of death and took me before their master, Nozdormu. He said they wanted me to continue my hunt. He granted me immortality as a Watcher, tasked to bear witness to the history of Azeroth as one of his agents.

I am Xarantaur the Witness, and it is my duty to preserve the true history of Azeroth, lest it be forgotten.

This quest sucks. I killed him 3 times and no drop. Finally abandoned quest and started over. That did the trick. 4th kill horn dropped.

He says he was one of the first generation of tauren druids to be taught - but that doesn't mean he or they preceded the night elves. Also, he refers to Cenarius as 'Shan'do' which is a Night Elf word. Granted, he's OLD, but he's not evidence all on his lonesome that tauren were druids first. He even tells you that tauren 'began to forget'. So not only does he not give proof that tauren were druids first, but he shows they lost the path over time.
So if you're looking for a TAUREN WERE DRUIDS FIRST SHUT UP NIGHT ELVES WE'RE BETTER npc, sorry, this guy isn't it for you.

Except that, you know, he mentions that this was before the sundering. Malfurion himself only began to be taught a few weeks before the Sundering, and it can be implied when he says the last generation of Tauren Druids, that there were some before.

And Shan'do was a word Cenarius himself created, not a Darnassian word.

Xarantaur absolutely, precisely *does* predate the Night Elves (even Mafurion Stormrage) as using druidic magic. To the tune of about 2,000 years. Likely because so many people have insisted (incorrectly) that Night Elves were the first druids, it's been officially clarified by Blizzard - and it's not even close.

Warcraft Chronicles: Vol 1, p89-90.
" often walked among the nomadic "burly race of bovine creatures". He taught these creatures the secrets of the wilds, and he delighted in watching them flourish. ...
Some of the more nomadic tribes traveled all the way across the continent, ... Other tribes settled in the balmy area of central Kalimdor and reunited with their ancient benefactor, Cenarius. Returning to their ancestral hunting hunting grounds allowed them to rediscover their old traditions. Those who studied with Cenarius learned the druidic magic of the natural world ...
Those in central Kalimdor, close to the Well of Eternity, would take the name "tauren".
These far-flung groups maintained contact with one another for many years, but, when the Great Sundering eventually shattered the world, all connection between the tribes was lost. "

This was all about 12,000 years ago, before Malfurion ever even began training with Cenarius (which wasn't 'til about 10,000 years ago. So, tauren forgot their ways, wandered the continent, came back, reunited with Cenarius, and learned druidism a *second* time - all two millennia before Malfurion even thought about being a druid.
The catch is that on page 97, it says that Malfurion was the "first mortal druid". The tauren were first to use druidic magics by a longshot. This is blatantly stated. But, they didn't practice druidism solely. Malfurion was the first actual "druid", if druid is defined by one's ability to enter the Dream. So, it's really a matter of semantics whether one means druidic magic in conjunction with other things, or a solely-practicing Druid. The thing of it is that the going into the Emerald Dream is what is *now* considered the mark of a True Druid.

I'd still consider the original tauren (or their racial predecessors, the Yuangol) to be druids, and not make a distinction between "druidism/ druidic magic" and "Druid", but that's merely a semantic debate. Especially since the character that was actually present actually refers to himself as "one of the first tauren druids, of the last generation taught by Shan'do Cenarius".
