Companions. Vanity-pets. They'll still like you even when nobody in World of Warcraft does. And for that matter, nobody in reality may like you either. But don't worry. You've got your Companions. Your vanity-pets. You're not gonna be alone anymore. Or ever again! You have friends.

Companions are small "pets" that follow you around. They have a tab dedicated to them, as mounts and spell's has aswell. Most pets have a few animations, while others have plenty. Some even has special animations and spells, like Mini K.T. & Willy has the urge to kill small critters...

And of course, collecting these companions earns you achievements: Can I Keep Him?, Plenty of Pets, Plethora of Pets, Shop Smart, Shop Pet... Smart, and Lil' Game Hunter (the last two rewards a pet when achieved).

EDIT: Added in Patch 4.1 are Petting Zoo and Menagerie and in Patch 4.2, Littlest Pet Shop. All three achievements also award pets.

EDIT 2: Added in Patch 5.0 are Going to Need More Leashes and That's a Lot of Pet Food. As with the latest trend, they reward battle pets, as they are now called.

EDIT 3: Added in Patch 6.0 is So. Many. Pets. and also rewards a pet.

A helpful tip: Companions disappear with you! Rogues, druids and mages should be most pleased, as companions are hidden as you are.

before the Pet Battles and Achievements came out for Companion Pets, this described Companion Pets the best way possible:
"Extremely rare but entirely useless small pets that do nothing but look cute!"

SHADOWLANDS Table Missions Companions XP chart
thanks to Ced42 for it.

Everytime your companion levels up it auto heals to max.
You also get XP boost reward missions when your renown is high enough, 3k, 7.5k, 10k, and rep based 75k a few times.
