This title is not a reference to any movie or music or anything. It's an exact replica to how professorship works in academia.

In academia an assistant professor is the "entry level" professor. These are the people who are usually on tenure track who have just gotten their PhDs (or MD or OD or Sci.D or Ed.D) They usually don't have a lot of funding and usually don't have a large amount of students under them. Mostly because they aren't proven as professors yet. This is the first of the digs in archeology and so aptly they name it after the first rank you get in academia.

Academic Positions
Associate Professor- You are new, you have not proven yourself yet.
Assistant Professor - You've proven you can do novel research, but do not have the experience for full professorship. You get tenure.
Professor - You do novel research, have tenure and basically do whatever you want. Chances are good professors at this level don't actually do the research but manage their army of graduate students. (Much like my PhD. Advisor did.)

For those curious what tenure is. Tenure means they cannot fire you simply because they do not like the work you do. This is a system that allows people in academic research to research things that are not popular. This doesn't apply to things that are unethical (IE, You want to study what happens if you give kids AIDs.) More information here.
