This seems to match the druid tier 6 thunderheart set exceptionally well though at this point 10 levels later, tier 6 might be irrelevant.

Before these changes, you might have been able to build a bear with nearly 40,000 armor, but that relies on using Defender's Code and Origin of Nightmares, items of such ridiculous power that we were going to nerf them anyway before this change. (Now they're fine.)

Upcoming feral changes will make bear armor-multiplier not work on amor non-armor items like weapons, trinkets and will only affect the base armor of items. (e.g. some cloaks have bonus armor on them)

Worthwhile for a warlock that is going to have his/her voidwalker tanking Sartharion (particularly with all 3 drake adds, where the strategy became popular)
1 less stamina than absolute max you can get in weapon slots, and the extra armor increases mitigation by a small amount.

A warlock tank typically wears as much stamina/mitigation as possible and forgoes spellpower, since all he will be doing is standing to the side and keeping up the 30% mitigation effect of improved health funnel

I understand that hunters can use staves atm, and that most staves have got the stats that they deeply desire. But I'm the MT for my current guild (I say current with bated breath as I'm incredibly ticked that my looting master gave it to the hunter over me), and while a hunter can get great use out of the stam and agility there's got to be better weapons out there for him to snatch up.

Druid tanks specifically benefit from the 2085 AP, and the 714 armor.

Yes I completley understand that armor is no longer multiplied by Dire bear's multipliers, but 714 armor on a weapon alone is nothing to sneeze at.

Sure I know I'm just QQ'ing a bit here, but with the drop rate on this beauty I'm sure that will be the one and only time that I see it drop.

.....all to be lost to a hunter >_<

its all part of Blizz way of homogenizing the classes. Rogues take our leather, now hunters can take out staffs.

I am a hunter in my guilds core 25 man raid group and was given this from my loot master. The only reason I was given this is because the 2 Druids in the raid passed on it. Hunters should never gripe about this weapon it is most definately first and foremost a Druid weapon well more specifically a Druid tank. I'm happy to have it but would much prefer a weapon more tailored to my needs as a hunter

I am a surv hunter, picked this up last night in a Naxx 25 man heroic fight. There were two druids in the group (it was a guild run), and I did not roll on it until they both passed. Then it went to a greed roll, and myself and another hunter rolled... of course we would. But I would not have done so if any one of the druids rolled. It's important to realize that if you see a hunter with one of these on his back, he didn't necessarily screw over one of his guild brothers. It's a killer weapon, great agi and stam buffs which we so dearly need, the armor perk is just that... a perk. Ranged dps is never in the thick of the fight anyways, so we're always looking for an edge when it comes to maximizing dps potential. This staff is not the best out there for a hunter, but it's not really a hunter weapon if you're a druid who sees it on a hunter. I don't know how many times I have seen the Nerubian Conquorer or the Envoy of Mortality on someone other than a hunter... I drool every time... so apparently other classes see the benefit of grabbing one of these incredible weapons. It probably balances out in the end, if we keep playing long enough we'll get the stuff we're after.

Having run with a hunter that was using this (in blues and greens, mind you), I feel your pain... I was cringing the whole run.

On my THIRD run through Grobbulus, this thing dropped for the THIRD time. The couple Druids we had in raid already had the bloody thing. It's better than the Staff of Trickery that I had previously, so I was able to get my hands on it. Fair and square.

That Hunter might've come into it the same way.

Could someone please do the calculations on how much AP this staff gives in cat form, talents and all? I calculate about 3072 (1 AP per agility, 106 agility with survival of the fittest, so 106 + (2085 feral AP, increased by 20% with Predatory Strikes which is 2502), so 106 + 2502 + (154 increased by 20% from predatory strikes) which is 185, so 106+2502+185 * 1.1 from heart of the wild is 3072, but check me on that.

Nearly lost this on my druid's first venture into Naxx 25. My guild was forced to pick-up a few PuG's to even out the group and one was a very noobish hunter.

Needless to say, staff drops and I roll as main need because I'm tanking with Staff of Trickery. The PuG Hunter rolls against me at last second and blows my roll away. I ask him why he wants the weapon and get the reply, "It has a @#$% ton of AGI. Why are you rolling on a Hunter weapon?"

I took a bio break at that point to avoid replacing my laptop, but fortunately my GL had my back. He plays a Bear spec Druid and a Hunter, so he "discussed" things with the PuG and I came back to find the staff in my bag. :)

Of course, Endless Journey dropped off Kel and the PuG winds up beating out my GL and another guild Hunter for it (No thanks to his pet pulling 1 wing of adds, killing him and the other OT). Left with the parting shot of "This is good, but its still not as good as the staff the druid got. Meh."

Suffice to say after running Naxx 25 religiously with my druid and 3 alts, I've only seen the staff drop 2 more times. Each has gone to a Druid over a hunter, regardless that they were cat druids...

Within a single-guild run I'd agree hunters should leave this item for bears for the sake of optimizing guild loot use.

In a multi-guild or PUG run, I have no problem with a hunter calling it a main-spec item and rolling on it par with bears. The argument that hunters NEVER need armor in PvE falls a little flat when the very next (or previous) fight may have them kiting zombies around. Certainly there's a little goodwill to be lost or gained by the hunter's choice, so if his pets have been pulling adds or he's been leaving aspect of the pack on through pulls a little too often, passing on the item may be a good way to recognize you could contribute to the group a little more. By the same token if a hunter is leading your DPS by a fair stretch or providing various utilities that might not otherwise be available (replenishment, tranq shot, traps, misdirect, etc), admitting that this IS a nearly-optimal piece of gear for a hunter is a nice way of recognizing that contribution.

I won this tonight over a hunter who was legitimately attempting to obtain it while on my druid (who was tanking). He rolled 99. I rolled 100. Even the RNG gods know that this belongs in the hands of a druid.

The skin seems to have changed in 3.2.2, It went from a lovely brown with red detailing to a yucky brown with blue detailing.

A weird change, blue is not really a Druid colour.

Alright, so we're into 3.2.2 at the moment, with 3.3 a stone's throw away. Is it just me or is this thing STILL the best bear tanking staff in the game? Comparing this to other weapons in Rawr's database, apparently the only weapons with any stamina increase are all in ToC (and a few Ulduar gemmables, if you stam-gem them). Even then, Rawr's graph puts this staff's combined mitigation and survivability at higher than every single druid weapon available in 3.2.2 (excluding PvP weapons, of course). Is that data correct?

Luckily, bear tank is my alt spec. I main spec a cat, so I have other weapons that are more obvious upgrades in that particular spec (although I'm starting to think I'm the only person daft enough to dual-spec as both types of ferals).

Oh, and in case anyone was wondering, I didn't really have to roll on this. No one else wanted it, so I was like, "well, it has armor, better stamina than my current weapon... I could make use of it." And I did, and it's still a part of my tank set to this day.

While this post is old, something in it needs to be addressed.

For hunters, Polearms / staves / etc are stat sticks. they want them for the Agi, and the other stats.

for Druids (bears AND cats) its the main source of damage.

at no point should a melee polearm or staff be rolled out between ANY hunter and feral mainspec. the FERAL should get it. just as at no point should a hunter need to roll off against any class for a bow or gun that a warrior wants for a stat stick.

To look at it from Todays perspective, if my guild gave a hunter Malice over a MT Bear or DPS kitty, I'd be having words with my Raid leader and Officers. (I'm the GM but i don't lead the raids, I've delegated that to someone who can better handle it.)

i never knew about the colorchange from red to blue and i have to say, i prefer the blue version. the red one had zero contrast. nothing made it stand out.

IMHO: Best looking druid weapon. EVER. not even Malevolence or the ICC weapons. NOTHING comes close to this weapon. I've kept it since my Naxx tanking days, hoping that eventually blizzard will put in a "item appearance" slot so i can make any weapon i want look like the Great and mighty Origin of Nightmares :)

Yesterday I decided to get this staff for my feral dru.

Friends: Mage and resto shaman.

We 3 manned Patchwerk and Grobulus. I was lucky to get this staff on 1st staff :)
