Utgarde Keep (pronounced oot-guard) is the first dungeon hub appearing in World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King. It is located on the shores of Lake Cauldros in the Howling Fjord of Northrend.

Utgarde will be inhabited by the vrykul (led by King Ymiron), a Viking-like race bent on proving their strength to the Lich King, who will raise the most worthy of their warriors to serve him beyond the grave. Therefore, it can be expected that this instance will feature at least some undead.

The first of two wings, known simply as the Utgarde Keep, was available for play at BlizzCon 2007. It is suitable for a 5-man level 70-72 party.

The second wing, Utgarde Pinnacle, will be a 5-man instance for level 80 players.

This is one of the first instances you can do as soon as you enter Northrend. Just like Hellfire Ramparts of TBC, this place will give out good gear compared to what most people get as soon as they get WotLK. In fact, once this place is properly tuned, a good group of level 70s with greens and blues can successfully complete this place.

Finished this last night on my Resto Shaman (ZA/Badge geared). It is remarkably similar to Ramparts, the trash wasn't too hard at all, simple packs of 2, 3 and 4 mobs. Our party consisted of a Resto Shaman (me), Prot Warrior (MT), Prot Paladin (OT), Elemental Shaman, and a Mage of some spec :P

The first boss, Prince Keleseth fires off shadowbolts, and has and ability that will encase a random person in a block of ice, dealing 400 damage per tick, simple enough to heal through. He also summons skeletons that can be killed very quickly, then shortly after they die, they ress themselves and can be killed again. We killed him very quickly.

The second boss was Skarvald the Constructor and Dalronn the Controller. Easy peasy, Skarvald randomly charged, Dalronn chain casts Shadowbolt. When one died, he ressed as a 'black spirit' and couldnt be targetted, but the other one was nearly dead anyway, and as soon as the second one dies, you've won! Huzzah!

The last boss (Ingvar the Plunderer) was very hard.

Basically, he hits hard, has an aoe roar that does Shadow damage and interrupts spells being cast (with an 8 second silence) and a stackable debuff that increases Shadow damage taken by 5%, and stacks up to 50 times >_<

When he dies, he gets ressurected, and gains an upgraded version of his major attack which now does this: Deals 17500 to 22500 Shadow damage to all enemies within a 10 yard cone in front of the caster. In addition, deals 1750 to 2250 Shadow damage to all enemies, knocking them down. 3 sec cast, 2 sec cooldown.

Basically, you have to tank him away from the rest of your party, with his back to them, and as soon as you see him casting - the tank has to get the hell out of there (especially in phase 2) - or you run the risk of taking up to 23000 shadow damage in one hit. A few times he one shot our tank and off tank.

We got him down on about our 5th try, and recieved https://www.wowhead.com/cata/item=35576 for our troubles.

Some background information before you start.

The vrykul are a race of half-giant warriors native to the Howling Fjord located in southeastern Northrend. It is said that in ancient times the vrykul inhabited the land, founding a vast and prosperous civilization. Then one day, without warning or explanation, the vrykul vanished, leaving behind only deserted villages and abandoned temples. Due to the settlement of Valgarde, the vrykul have recently returned.

These formidable warriors have begun attacking Horde and Alliance settlements, and many of the vrykul are pouring out of the fortress of Utgarde Keep, not far from Valgarde. The vrykul's motives and their whereabouts for the past several thousand years remain a mystery.

Inside Utgarde Keep, the Dragonflayer clan builds massive engines of war, and train proto-dragons to act as steeds and attacks for their raids.

Loyal to the slumbering King Ymiron, rumours abound that they serve the Lich King. They are dark and vampiric in nature, and tie into the Titan creation myth that will unfold as events of the expansion take place.

Utgarde Keep is their main base of operations and is similar to the fel orcs' Hellfire Citadel.

I believe you get between 90-100k xp per clear @ 70. If you have a geared group and can clear it in 15 or so minutes, it's amazing for leveling.

A decently geared group run will take about 30 minutes. I ran it 3 times yesterday with me (geared mt) a shammy (geared healer) and 3 random dps with ok gear.

I did this using Trellian's tactics. I just have one thing to add, the last boss aint really that hard. Tanked him without any problems just have his back towards the group :)

Last boss has similar circles all the time:

1st phase: HUMANOID FORM
- mostly he melees
- at the end of the cast he does he does ability similar to shockwave that protection warriors get from last talent. Beware to move away from it if your tank has less than 12 or 13k hp. Others should not stand in cone anyway.
- few seconds after he roars. All casters should stop casting after roar because he does aoe and at the same time he silences for quite a long time if you have been casting while being hit. Very bad for healers.
- He keeps these 2 abilities in this order every few seconds.
After he dies he is resurected.

2nd phase: UNDEAD FORM
He gets resurected with the exactly same amount of life as he had before.
- he is still meleeing mostly
- he uses 2 aoe knockbacks now, couldn't see the difference in yelling or anything.
-1st one is similar to previous, which does aoe and silences.
- 2nd one knocks down and adds a group debuff that increases shadow damage by 5%. Each time he does that you get another stack. He is usually down before 4th stack, but while 2maning him we got 13 stacks and it was still managable.
- last ability is his axe. From time to time he hurls his axe that starts doing whirlwinds which does around 1500-2500 damage on cloth per second. Run away from it.

Watch line of sight because of pillars and you should be ok.

P.S. Standing behind pillars doesn't remove the aoe knockbacks.

Not really hard. It's basically the same as Ramparts in TBC. The largest pull is 5 linked mobs. (More possible if you want) Most of the groups are 3 or 4 mobs. I ran this three times yesterday. It should take somewhere between 30 and 45 minutes, depending on how good your healer is at conserving mana to allow some measure of chainpulling.

Mobs of note: Enslaved Proto-Drakes do a minor knockback which doesn't seem to reduce aggro but is annoying all the same. Also do a flame breath, so tank away from the group and away from other mob packs so that your physical DPS doesn't get knocked into the other mobs.

The Rune-keepers cast runes. Big annoyance factor, since they can either make a mob go immune to all dmg for a few seconds, or cast an aura on them which does a lot of fire dmg every tick, like the mobs in Mechanar. If you've got two of these in one pull, either CC one or stun-nuke one.

Dragonflayer Strategists drop bombs that explode for some damage. They also hurl daggers at random party members. The Spiritualists heal. The undead mobs, Frenzied Geists specially, you'll encounter hit hard and fast, so don't sic your mage on them without tanking them.

Trellian's tacs for the bosses are spot-on. I'll add that the easiest (from my point of view as a tank) is to run through the boss when he casts Smash or Dark Smash, since he doesn't follow you. Also, the aggro doesn't seem to reset from phase 1 to phase 2 and he'll start with a roar in phase 2. It can be LoS'ed.

Though wowhead suggests otherwise, you CAN get into utgarde keep at 68 - and do the two quests obtained inside.

You and your party must either be 10 feet away from the blast, or out of its way.
Directions for avoiding "Smash"

Melee: - When Ingvar is casting his, "Smash" ability, run to either the left or the right, out of his view.

Casters: You should always be at least 10 feet back.

Think of his "Smash" ability as a Mages spell, "Cone of Cold".

I would put this down as one of the easiest heroics. With a Rogue and Pally for CC, this was a cake walk (although two druids for wolf sleeping) Still easy. go go heroic!

Just 4-manned Utgarde with the following:
80 Shaman - 0 xp
76 Paladin - 150,332 xp
76 Priest - 146,686 xp
75 Priest - 144,000 xp

Because of some network problems tonight, we got kicked off every 8-12 minutes throughout the run, but we estimate it took us about 35 minutes. It'd have taken about 20 minutes w/o the disconnects. So, about 450k/hr for lvl 75-76ish.

Tanked this today with an excellent PUG as a 71 Prot pally (12.5k unbuffed health, mostly Northrend quest reward greens), 2x 70 Mage, 73 Restro Druid, 71 Shammy. Apart from a dodgy pull (the one before you get in the place with all the fire - the name escapes me) and the last boss it was smooth running.

The last boss hits hard and fast in phase 2. He one-shotted me with Smash in Phase 2 once, and the rest of my group got him down to 8k before we wiped. Took three attempts to bring him down - probably my fault as he killed me twice with Smash.

First boss is a simple tank and spank. Get all your group to stay near you and spam consecrate when he brings in his adds. Hand of Freedom comes in handy against his frost CC. The second boss can give you trouble if you don't get them to die at roughly the same time - not really a problem when you're AoEing everything. The last boss seems pretty tough considering how easy the rest of the instance is, but I reckon with a bit of practice and an easier to see cast bar, it'd be quite easy.

New favorite instance. It does not take a really long time for a group to do if they are prepared and understand the bosses. There seems to be a large number of optional pulls throughout the instances, there are some rooms (like the dragon stables) where you barely have to keep half of what is in the room to advance.

Lots of humanoids make for easy crowd control targets, thus making pulls very easy. There are also a few caves that are chock full of non elite undead mobs, any tank that makes it this far should have no problems rounding them all up and letting a mage/lock/pally/anything with any kind of aoe at all knock them all down.

The bosses are the most difficult part, I personally had difficulty with the last one. His shockwave like ability can easily one shot a healer or melee dps if they are not careful.

Don't try to solo this. Ye'll do fine on the trash but the first boss keeps ye in frost tomb for 99% of the time so ye just end up dead.

In case you've wiped and lost your pet (and don't have any Corpse Dust on you), you can case Raise Dead on his corpse between Phase 1 and Phase 2.

I was finally able to solo the prince, with some lucky bugs....the ice tomb for some reason didnt land twice that let me keep going. Im a BM hunter in most Nax gear with turtle in tank spec (I've tried with Bear, and even though they have more life the turtle shield works great when the adds are out, or your Iced). It took me about 9 tries to get him but I finally got it.

Start with your normal rotation, stay as close to the prince as you can, right before Ice Block make sure and throw out a mend pet. The first Ice block bugged and didnt land on me, the 2nd I used my pvp trink to get out, 3rd and 4th time I had to have pet target it for me and the fifth bugged again while I burned him down. Mend pet will keep pets alive while you're ice blocked so you really only have to worry about your own health. That's where I ended up losin it each time.

As soon as your out of Ice Block Volley all the mobs and if possible try and get a volley and mend off before your iced. If you can keep the adds killed and get out of the ice fairly quick then its not a bad fight. I had to use a bandage after 2 of the Ice's but the adds targetted me too soon most of the time and didnt get the full benefit so ended up havin to use a pot near the end. If you can get a stone from a lock too that would help some.

As far as the second boss...I only got 2 tries in on him. Basic plan burn caster to 10% then switch. The problem was that for some reason even tho pet had aggro the caster kept shootin at me...I tried usin MD and Feign but he just kept on me. The closest I got was 50% on the 2nd guy and 10% on the caster. If I could keep the caster off me, I dont think my pet had even lost any health. The bear might be better for this fight but I wanted to keep the turtle out for the end fight.

I believe with the right practice you can solo this place....however it seems to take to long to be productive. If ya can just grab a buddy and duo it will go a lot faster. Shouldnt be hard and pretty much any spec would help.

I highly recommend someone in the party have some Mighty Shadow Protection Potion for the 2nd phase of the Ingvar fight, it really helps lessen the damage that he does.

An 155-ilvl Blue item has the same item value with an 125-ilv Epic item.
In other words, the normal drops from UK have the same value with the epic drops from
Prince Malchezaar (last boss in Karazhan) or
Kael'thas Sunstrider (heroic mode only) or
any other drops , found inside Gruul's Lair and Magtheridon's Lair.
Notice that Tier 4 sets have 120-ivl items , so they can be easily replaced with drops from normal Utgarde Keep.
Also, an 155-ilvl Blue item is BETTER than EVERY Green item in-game .

Solo'd the instance as a Uld/Naxx geared Blood DK. Stayed in DPS gear and Blood presence the whole time.

1st boss roflstomped me on my first try, forgot to equip my pvp trinket, got blocked, that was pretty much it. Second time I tried I was more prepared. Chain casted DnD and Horn until I had full runic power before engaging the boss (only works if you have morbidity). Then I cast army of the dead and summoned a ghoul, plage strike, icy touch, hysteria+dancing rune weapon then just unload. Once you're out of runes use Empower runic weapon and unload again. He blocked me once when he was at 30% or so but I trinketed out and finished him off. I didn't really worry about the adds at all, I think heart strike got a couple of em. Was doing around 5k dps on him including the summons, any less I think I would have gotten blocked twice and owned.

2nd boss hit's pretty hard. It was hard to keep myself healed up with death strike. Ended up having to double death strike, then empower rune weapon and double death strike again plus used my endless healing potion and lifeblood. Heart strike makes killing them at the same time pretty trivial.

3rd boss was cake. Just avoid the smash and take him down.

Also, the worgs hurt, kill them first, and don't stand in bombs.

As for thrash, I could fully solo it with level 77 prot paladin. Full blue crafted prot gear + enchants. Lifeward on the MH. Of course pots (+45 def rating and +20 all stats) and food buff gave me 18k hits. Some packs of 4 mobs (especially later ones with casters) were slightly harder, but really I did not have to bubble heal too much on thrash pulls.

1st boss is simply impossible at the level, no way to survive the ice blocks. Skipped.
2nd boss - they also hit too hard to outlast. Skipped.
3rd boss - funny enough, I could get till 2nd phase with some pillar abuse. In 2nd phase, unfortunately, the whirling axe thing kept wiping me, since even if I avoid it ASAP, i still get 1-2 hits, which is 1.5-3k damage - too much to keep health and mana undrained for too long.

Bottom line. Trash mobs are ~6k (or drakes - 10k) rested exp. Good alternative to leveling, if you are bored of questing and want a slight challenge.

Note that Utgarde Keep and Utgarde Pinnacle were designed after Utgard Spire in the book Eragon. Utgard was the last stronghold of the Dragon Riders, a once noble clan of protectors; before King Galbatorix slew the remaining, posed as the villain in this book. A tribute to the author Christopher Paolini no doubt.

Something I've just noticed while waiting for a party member get back to the computer while in Utgarde Keep - the last part of the instance, the bridge and arena where you face Ingvar, is called Tyr's terrace.
This could be a possible reference to the Viking metal band Týr, as there are obvious similarities and connections between the Vikings and the vrykul.
Or, I could just be reading into this a bit too much :P up to the rest of you to decide.

Just looked it up on wikipedia, and Tyr is also the god of single combat in norse mythology, so my guess is Blizz were referring to that instead hehe.

1st boss-just ignore the adds and focus on boss

2nd boss-make macro and alert everyone when one boss is on 5% hp then nuke other one.Also focus on caster cause he makes wonderfull damage

3rd boss-First kill is easy just pillar hide and best is to have more range dps then melee. Only prob can be if the healer gets stuned for 2 sec and cant heal-also for begginers healing pots can come in handy if first time healing and dont have enough mana or mp5

This is easily soloable by an enh sham in some ICC/badge gear.

Pulls are super easy unless you get really unlucky with MW procs even if there's 3 or 4 mobs. Be sure to keep shamwall on CD during the pulls for the 30% damage reduction. (makes it much more manageable)

Keleseth wasn't too tricky, just pop your wolves as soon as the warning for frost tomb comes up and they can kill it for you. I only had one tomb on me but i used BL anyways just to be sure i'd kill him fast enough.

Skarvald and Dalronn were a little tougher, but same basic strat. pop wolves, Bl and your regular totems. Burn one to 5% then finish them at the same time.

Ingvar was a little tougher (probably because i had almost no MW procs...) used wolves on the pull and rage. burned him in about 25 seconds. saved BL for the undead phase as well as fire ele just for the heck of it. dark smash was pretty brutal and i had to use a runic health pot.

Sorry for the wall o' text but just wanting to help any other enh shams out there that want to do something other than waiting for raids to reset.

I have solo'd today in HC mode with DK. 5757gs tank gear. 45/0/26
I tried the first many times by the time he succeeded. Too much dmg from the frost tomb.
Made frost gear Icebane Chestguard, Icebane Girdle, Icebane Treads. And if frost tomb not resist then use pet attack or Titan-Forged Rune of Alacrity.

On second boss need many heal. Dalronn the Controller spammed Shadow bolt. My hps on this boss 1800.

Last boss very easy.

So today I decide, for the hell of it, to solo Ingvar. Only thing is, I don't have a tanking pet right now because I accidentally released my croc instead of my cat when I got my wolf. So what do I do?

I hunterstealth through the instance and burn Ingvar down before he kills my wolf!

I keep my pet dismissed throughout the run, just running through and feigning death whenever I get attacked. The room with the fire is the hardest, and it's still easy. I just shoot the guy that's on the chain, the fire stops, I run to the other side and feign death.

Prince is nerve wracking because I probably won't be able to solo him (Because I'm survival with a ferocity pet and no glyph of mending, I don't trust my wolf to live through my being frost tombed)and I don't know his aggro radius. I manage to get by without aggro.

Skarvald & Dalronn are pathetically easy to skip because you don't even need to use the stairs. The chains blocking the sides don't go all the way to the wall. You could probably skip them even in heroic.

So then I get to Ingvar. Turns out pets are smart and automatically avoid the smash by running behind him. Only thing is, Ingvar's melee hits for almost a fifth of my wolf's health. So. When my mend pet starts to lose to Ingvar's melee damage, I run to the other side of the area and distracting shot to give it more time.

I beat down his first phase with my wolf about half health and then the fun part begins. His melee now hits harder and his smash can't be completely avoided. He ended up doing just enough damage that my mend pet couldn't keep up and my pet died when he was at 12k health.

I thought to myself.

"Son of a hooker."

I lay it all on him, and find that he's immune to all types of slow. No Wing Clip, no Concussive Shot, and no Frost Trap. So. Black Arrow, Serpent Sting, Snake Trap, Explosive Shot, Disengage, Aimed Shot, Explosive Shot...

We both die at the same time.

So I hunterstealth all the way back through and find that he dropped Ingvar's Monolithic Cleaver. Pfah.

In any case, it was a very fun way to waste a lot of time I could have spent working on Loremaster of Northrend.

An unusual bug occurred last night when I put my level 69 pally tank in for a specific. We killed Prince Keleseth and then Skarvald & Dalronn fine. Afterwards we moved on up the next staircase but the healer DC'd so me and another dps died on the trash. The healer didn't come back and we had no ress, so I ran back in only to find that I couldn't get into the room where Skarvald & Dalronn would have been.

There was a large gate shutting me out, and when we replaced the healer the new one couldn't get through either. I've never seen that gate before, and I can't see any reason why it should be closed when the boss behind it is dead. I can only imagine it was a bug with the latest patch (4.0.3).

Hopefully it'll be resolved before too long, but this is something to look out for.

Since patch 4.0.3 went live on 11.23.10, I've noticed some changes to minimum level requirements to enter dungeons. I'm not sure if the changes are intentional or the result of a bug since they weren't listed in the official or undocumented patch notes.

While planning to run my priest alt through UK when he hits 65 tonight, I noticed that the requirement to enter UK has now been changed to 67. If these changes have been made to all dungeons, can we please get some updated information on this whenever it becomes available.

At 3:30pm CST I was in a LFG pug in Utgarde Keep and the inside gate closed on us. Druid and Warlock could not come back inside, even when they ported out and back in. It brought them to the front of the instance and blocked us off from one another. It was the gate before Skarvald the Constructor & Dalronn the Controller. Was this a bug or is there a reason for this? We could not finish the instance. Perhaps others have had this issue and may be able to assist each other.

I had this same problem. The rest of the group infront of the gate could not go on without me and the healer and we had to disband.

I am 85 feral dps druid in full bloodied pvp agility set with Seliza's Spear (Heroic) equipped. Successfully soloed this dungeon easy to get the mood recipes. (Haunted Herring, Tasty Cupcake, etc) None of the bosses or mobs took me below 85% health, I have 107.7k health unbuffed. First boss's frost tomb was never successfully cast on me.

Solo'd as an 85 Hunter. This dungeon is easy. Let your pet do all the work, and use Feign Death when they run after you.

Unfortunately, I didn't get any Justice Points for doing it. Apparently you have to do it as a group to get them.

Don't bother trying to solo any boss other then that last one as a rogue. They are way too RNG based.
The first few mobs you have to either kill or have you on at the furnace thing will see through your vanish unless you're far enough away. If you get caught in a daze, you're screwed as they will continue to daze you.

First boss will iceblock you, leaving you completely open for attacks until your inevitable death.

Second boss, which is a caster and a melee, will kill you as well nomatter which one you start on.

Edit: Talking about heroic. Not normal.

I am level 68 and I tried to enter this instance today and it told me I was too low level! I can queue for it in dungeon finder and accept the quests that are inside, and the person who was running me through was able to summon me into the dungeon from inside - but I could not enter!

Utgarde Keep entrance: In the front of the building, you'll see the Meeting Stone for Utgarde Pinnacle. Fly around to the back and the very bottom of the building. The entrance to Utgarde Keep is near a bunch of flying Daggercap Hawks , a big camp fire, and a couple Dragonflayer Thane guards standing outside.

Fly in and go down a long hallway and the entrance to the instance is inside.

This can be easily solo'd as an SP at level 85 on Normal, maybe lower for someone who has more skills than I. :) You can also pretty solo everything as a lvl85 SP on Heroic; however, the only thing you might need help with is the 2 bosses (Controller and Constructor due to adds and spirit rez which doesn't matter who you down first). Unless you are geared well and a better player than me, or I am just horrible...you might want help with them! :). I ended passing them until I could find someone to help and it was a decent geared Warlock. I will try again when I have a bit higher gear. Hey, I was even surprised that I got "On the Rock's" achievement on the first boss as solo...so....have fun! :)

to get there take the boat from men. harbor, then go through the center of valance keep and hang a right in the court yard. You will see a busted section of wall where fighting is going on, and go through it. run completly straigh through the next little camp where the attackers are coming from, and continue straight up a set of stairs. those stairs will lead you under utgarde keep to where there is a summoning stone and a entrance.

Despite what many would tell you, our mediocre-geared groups of 70s found this instance fairly challenging. But it is definitely possible with a little strategy. Check out the individual boss links above for some points. I encourage everyone to work up to the instance quest at the end of the chain. It only takes 10-15 minutes to finish all the previous steps and has a very nice rare reward at the end. Time to complete the instance is about 30-60 minutes depending on skill and gear.

All fairly well geared 70s 2 pallies, DK, Rogue and Warlock(me) Died on last boss because of fight mechanics. Took about 45 minutes.

The last boss is the only challenging one. You have to kill him twice. First as a humanoid then as an undead. As and undead he has a few abilities but the most deadly is when he throws his axe. Our healer didn't move and we wiped. If your a caster there is a silence that can get fairly annoying but no biggie.

Things change in Heroic Mode...From first boss to last boss is very different and plus mob hit hard as like 4-5k per swing so you need a good geared tank and good healer. Our Tank got 23K life and healer only have 11k of mana,,,we wiped like 5 times coz of poor healing...So, look for a good healer and tank before you go to heroic...They will eat you alive with a poor group.

For stealthing solo to anywhere in this place is all up to if you can solo the Forge Master at the beginning to remove the firewall because you cant get past it. He also pulls 2 other elites, one can be sapped leaving just one add.

Tried soloing this as a 80 MM Hunter with decent mix of epic 80 and 78 superior gear. The initial mobs were fine, but once I got into the chamber with the fire blowing out of the central pillar, I couldn't get very far. I tried trapping two of the three attacking NPCs, but the pet couldn't take enough before I had to feign death. At least I finished the Disarmament quest.

Did this instance few times while leveling from 70 to 72. A bit of lottery I would say. If you get a group of reasonable DPS no strategy needed really. Bad DPS = wipe on last boss when he comes back alive.

Question(s). How come I can't see Keleseth's Blade of Evocation in the list of items? Does that mean noone with thottbot add-on ever got it? Or thottbot is doing something funny?

70s can easily do this instance, just remove frost tombs asap at Keleseth, then watch the double boss fight, take Skar to 20% then switch to the mage so as not to kill Skar (since he resses)... then finish mage off and then switch again, to take down Skar. Otherwise all bosses are pretty easy.

As a DK Tank blood/unholy I can do 2nd and 3rd boss with some difficulties. Can't do first one because of frost tomb. There was fair amount of greens and 2 blue boss drops, OK for enchanter, I know there are easier ways to earn living, but this was fun.

When I tried to solo this instance as a level 80 lock, I found the mobs to be grossly over powered. I mean WAY over powered. And yet with other similar level instances such as Botanica, I've solo'd them entirely. Weirder still, is that when going to UK in a group, it's like the mobs all magically become delicate little glass flies and I can nuke them down with ease.
