Choosing Between Gnomish or Goblin Engineering in Classic WoW
Classic

Engineering is one of the most commonly recommended professions in Classic WoW, due to the wide variety of damage dealing and special effects not found in other professions, most of which are only usable by engineers. Those players are soon faced with another choice, upon reaching 200 skill and level 30 they may choose between specializing in Gnomish or Goblin Engineering, a choice which cannot be changed without abandoning and releveling the profession entirely.
Despite their racial theme, the specializations are available to each faction - Horde players can specialize in Gnomish Engineering, and Alliance players can likewise take Goblin Engineering, but each have their own unique patterns and benefits, which leave many players indecisive. Luckily, Wowhead has a Guide for that!
Classic WoW Profession Guides
Our Classic WoW Profession guides explain the most efficient ways of leveling each Profession, where the Trainers are located, as well as some of the best recipes for that Profession and where to find them. If you're interested in Engineering or plan to roll Engineering, our guide can help you level Engineering without wasting any time farming the wrong materials or spending time crafting schematics that aren't efficient for leveling.

Gnomish Engineering
The number one reason to consider Gnomish Engineering is the
Coq de combat gnome
Trinket. Even though the Battle Chicken does very little damage, there is a chance it will cast
Caquètement de guerre
when attacking, which gives a 5% attack boost to all party members. This can be a significant damage boost, especially during a boss encounter. Only a Gnomish engineer can craft the Battle Chicken and it is Bind on Pickup, which means only Gnomish engineers can use it. It is possible to Level Engineering to 250, pick up Gnomish, craft the
Coq de combat gnome
and then re-level Engineering as a Goblin engineer, but that requires a lot of resources to pull off. Another Gnomish exclusive trinket is the
Rayon mortel gnome
, which requires 260 Engineering to craft. Just like the
Coq de combat gnome
, it is possible to re-level Engineering after crafting it, however. The Gnomish Death Ray is especially popular in PvP, because it does damage based on the health pool of the user, and most Players stack a lot of stamina in PvP, which means Death Ray can do a massive amount of damage.

Goblin Engineering
Goblin Engineering is most well known for its explosions, or more specifically the
Charge de sapeur gobelin
, which can have a massive effect on the PvP battlefield. If enough Goblin engineers run into a group of enemies and all use their Goblin Sappers simultaneously, it usually ends up with a lot of corpses from the enemy faction. The
Charge de sapeur gobelin
is also used in PvE encounters where the raid needs a quick AoE burst down of enemy mobs. Many of the Bind on Pickup recipes for the Goblin engineer aren't that impactful, items like
Bombinette
,
Casque de mineur gobelin
, or even
Fusil-dragon des gobelins
. Most players don't choose Goblin Engineering for these items, they choose it because they can make their own
Charge de sapeur gobelin
.

Which specialization is best?
Of course it's a preference thing, but generally Players that prefer PvP content will typically choose Goblin Engineering, because of how important
Charge de sapeur gobelin
are. Most of the best items available within both Engineering specialization are Bind on Equip, and many engineers will work with one another to get the best items for everyone, most notably items like
Lance-filet automatique gnome
and
Heaume-fusée gobelin
, which are both incredibly powerful in PvP.
Most melee PvE classes, such as
Guerrier
or
Voleur
, will often times pickup Gnomish Engineering for a boost to DPS with
Coq de combat gnome
. Because
Caquètement de guerre
only applies to your party members, your raid will want multiple users of the Battle Chicken in the raid, to get multiple
Caquètement de guerre
during a boss encounter. If you pick up Gnomish however, you won't be able to craft your own
Charge de sapeur gobelin
and will likely have to buy them from the Auction House or get them from a friend, but be warned, they can get expensive.
