Painted Eggs are New to 2015:

In 2015, you can help organize your own egg hunt with eggs from Noblegarden Vendors:

Œuf pauvrement décoré costs 10 silver. When looted, contains Œuf pauvrement décoré which vendors for 9 silver.
Œuf finement décoré costs 10 gold. When looted, contains Œuf finement décoréwhich vendors for 9 gold.
Œuf remarquablement décoré costs 1,000. When looted, contains Œuf remarquablement décoréwhich vendors for 900 gold.

All of these eggs, when placed on the ground, look like the same Painted Egg. You cannot tell which egg contains the pricey 900 gold.

A fun idea for an in-game event is for one player to hide all the eggs, invite friends to find them, and whoever finds the egg containing 900 gold first wins the egg hunt.

If you are making your own egg hunt, you can carry up to 20 Œuf pauvrement décoré , 5 Œuf finement décoré, and 1 Œuf remarquablement décoré in your bags at once.

A friend and I tested placing a purchasable egg from two different servers, and grouped up. I was able to pick up their egg no problem at all.

I bought one and placed it, testing to see how long it lasted. It lasted approximately 35 minutes. Kind of a weird amount of time. I know for certain it was over half an hour, but it was either 35 minutes or just short of that.

Either way, it allows for a decent setup time with enough time to spare for your guildies to do a search. However, if you're planning something big (like me), you will find this time unsatisfying.

At least it's better than five minutes, like the old eggs. :P

People who are not grouped with you can still pick up eggs you put down. If you're arranging a hunt and involve the 1000g egg, you might want to pick a remote area to do it.

I've been going on, watching my placed Poorly Painted Egg, and it's been 47 minutes so far.
I had to go do errands, otherwise I would have waited longer. :)
