A note of caution for non-healing cloth-wearers. Other classes have no problems with the snakes, but you'll need to be a bit more careful. Individually, their bites are minimal, but they will flock to you from the rest of the pond, meaning if you kill one, you will aggro most or all of the others, so kill as many from the shore as you can before going into the pond. In theory you'll then be killing fewer while you're retrieving the diary and you can retrieve the diary while being attacked.

But at that point it gets a little more interesting. The snakes respawn really quickly, so by the time you have the diary, the ones you killed first will have respawned. If the snakes kill you in the first round, they will have ALL respawned and you need to kill them again (133 XP each). What fun! But wait, there's more - when you're trying to get out of the pond, you will of course have remembered to leave by the shore where you entered because you can't get out of the pond anywhere else. Too easy, right? Well, the snakes (level 92) have a stun or slow effect to make your retreat more interesting and best of all - the Grogrond Water snakes aren't really water snakes! That's right, they will leave the pond and follow you along the road. If you're a Mage, you won't be able to use Blink because of the stun effect and of course we don't have Arcane Explosion any more so plan on using Greater Invisibility. Last but not least (and this might actually be a bug), I couldn't get out of combat until I reached the Ally FP.

Better still, just don't do this. Leave the diary in the lake because your repair bills will be considerably higher than any possible benefit you could realize and the annoyance and irritation of this quest will ruin your day.

I clicked to pick up this diary and the snake attacks interrupted my retrieval until they were all dispatched.
