Only found 3 so far on my numerous SC Strat runs. Anybody knows exactly where do they spawn?

These little buggers can be a pain to find, but if you know where to look, then you can get all five within 2-3 runs. The first place to look is in the room of Malor the Zealous. There will usually be one on the table, next to his books. The next place to look is in the room with columns, usually 3 or 4 mobs on the left, and three or four mobs on the right as you enter. The second spawn point for this thread is in that room, on a bench on the right side of the room. The third, and final place (as far as I know) is in the Archivist's room, on a crate against the back wall. These are not guaranteed to be there, but these are the three spots I was able to find mine at. I hope this helps.

Yeah those are the 3 spots. In the room with Malor, in the column room directly after that, and in the Archivist's room. Note that regardless of a dungeon reset, these items have their own timed respawn.

There is a fourth spot, in a basket at the back left of Malor's room. I got 4 in one run!

After walking by a spawn location that did not have a thread and looting one in Malor's room, I noticed that another spawned in Malor's room at the other spawn point. Back tracking to another spawn point, I found one where there previously wasn't one.

It appears that there is a random spawn order for the 4 threads. As soon as you've found one, try the other locations and repeat to get all 4 in a run.

Has this item become obsolete? I have one, but don't know its application. Wowhead doesn't appear to have any information as to quests or reagents.

I believe this item was originally used to make Coiffe du savant écarlate, available from this quest La coiffe du savant écarlate. The quest is no longer available.
