This is a reward for doing some of the order hall missions - I got mine from completing the first Death Knight story-related one, where I'm assembling saddles for the Four Horsemen.

Now that I'm done stating the obvious, I don't think there's any purpose in keeping them around; it's just a shame that for one-time-only missions you get such a dinky reward.

The gold value of former AP tokens was determined by the following:
Uncommon quality (green): 10 gold
Rare quality (blue): 25 gold
Epic quality (purple): 100 gold

The amount of AP in each token didn't matter, just the quality of the token itself.
Some tokens (such as those awarded from the Class Hall quests) do not follow this formula.

Edit: All AP tokens are now gray trash items.
