There is only one mob to get this pattern from, the Anvilrage Captains in BRD. There are only ever 2 or 3 per instance and they are located at the very end of the instance in the Emperor's Seat. As such it is a very rare and expensive pattern.

Dropped today from one of the mobs who spawn during "Jail Break!" quest. I forgot the name of the mob but I have uploaded the data through wowhead client and it should be up soon.

I was helping two friends doing the "Jail Break!" quest and luckily no one else in the group was LW. When it dropped I was like "WTF" I don't have to go through the whole BRD and keep hoping it will drop from the captain at the very end. Now I can make the full set, Finally !!

I'm a level 65 Tauren (Beastmaster) Hunter, trying to complete my Black Dragonscale set, and yeah it's hell trying to get this pattern. But here's a few tips.
The location of the Anvilrage Captains is right at the END of the instance. They are in the room where you find the Emperor. You will find about 3-5 (3 min) in there, each time you go, but you might have to kill more or less 70 in total to get the drop. So, you'll need to be very patient.

OK Now I've got them and OMG did that take long. (9 hours) They do drop, eventually. I had to kill 107 Anvilrage Captains in total! That is a minute 0.9% chance! But I'm sure they will drop faster for most. The number of Captains you will find is from 3-6 (rarely 5/6) and it tends to average to about 4 per run of the instance. To spot them easily just look for a stout red-haired dwarf holding a BIG sword in his hand. So a lesson learnt - be EXTREMELY patient. LOL. Something to amuse you is that there is a Metal Band playing in The Grim Guzzler every night at 8pm (or 7pm GMT in the European servers). They rock. :) In any case, if you happen to get this pattern and do not want it donate it to the best lether-worker of your guild, to your best friend, keep it for one of your characters in the future or sell it for a small fortune -seriously 9 hours non-stop dwarf crunching is no small feat.

The up side to all this is that you will know BDR like the back of your hand and you will most likely be Honoured with the Thorium Brotherhood by the end of it as you will collect so much Dark Iron Residue from the few mobs you kill (so many times over). This will allow you to buy the Black Dragonscale Boots pattern from the Lokhtos Darkbargainer in The Grim Guzzler. Also you will get a fair share of good items for 49s, and keep selling the boss drops (soulbound blue items) if you don't want them to Plugger Spazzring and you wil make a good 200g from them (or disenchant them). Also, bring plenty of bag space as you will be overloaded with Runecloth as well.

~~Last but by no means least, make sure you collect the Core of Elements and Dark Iron Scraps as you can exchange these for honour with the Argent Dawn.~~

At What level can I do this solo? I'm currently a level 58 Shaman, and am dying to have full set of black dragonscale armor.

Also, will I gain faction by killing the mobs in the dungeon, enough to buy the BP pattern?

I must be really lucky then, because I got it in a need/greed roll on a 5 person run my first time in BRD. I just put it up for auction, hoping to make quite a bit.

If you are like me and want this pattern just so that you can make the whole set, but don't know your way around BRD for nothing, I found the quickest way to get to the end for those of you wishing to farm for it.
At the entrance, take the mole machine on your right to "Just past the Grim Guzzler." This takes you inside Shadowforge City, now just run past the first group of dwarves and take a right heading down a ramp into the Chamber of Enchantment. Run past the friendly NPC into the room with Ambassador Flamelash, easy enough to run by him, or kill him if you want more shinies to vendor or disenchant. Exit to the left, through a tunnel of sorts into the Mold Foundry. I could run through all these guys without drawing aggro, this leads you to the Summoners Tomb. This is the first place you will actually need to stop and kill stuff. Talk to the one at the end to start the script, and after all 7 are dead, the door to the next area opens. Loot the chest next to the door for more blue shinies, and go through the door to the Lyceum. To the right is the way to Molten Core, keep going straight and open the door at the bottom of the ramp.
Now you are in a room with a crap-ton of little bad guys, the ones you are looking for are Shadowforge Flamekeepers. They are red so they stand out rather well from the rest of the mobs. Kill two of the flamekeepers and loot their torches, then use the torches to light the two shadowforge braziers. Once both of those are lit, the doorway to the next area opens. The mobs are non elite, so you could technically at 85 aggro the whole place and wipe them with one AOE, but that would make it tough to find the torch. Proceed to the Iron Hall, beat up on Magmus for a shiny or two, then onto The Imperial Seat where the captains are located. Hunt down the captains, killing the Emperor if you like, I usually just kick on Aspect of the Pack and haul back to the mole machine. Back at the entrance there is a vendor that you can dump the stuff off to, and even repair if needed. Leave, reset instance, back in and do it all over again. It would usually take between 6 and 8 minutes round trip per run.

Today I was the lucky one. After running the instance for about 20 times I found today both patterns :-) In the morning Pattern: Black Dragonscale Shoulders from Anvilrage Marshals and a few hours later the Pattern: Black Dragonscale Leggings from Anvilrage Captains. This will give some hope I guess :-)

Does anyone know if this Leatherworking pattern still drops as of patch 5.0.4? And does it only drop for toons that have Leatherworking skill, or can you farm for this using alts that don't have LW?

This pattern dropped 2 days ago (post patch 5.0.4) for me (FINALLY) after MANY runs through there. AOE looting was a VERY nice thing on runs like this. I still have not decided if I will put it up on the AH to see if there's any interest for it but it is boe, so any of your toons can do the runs but I don't know if the pattern only drops for leather workers as some other runs do (ie - if there are no one in your party that can use the pattern it won't drop). Good luck on your runs. Also, post patch 5.0.4 I had 2 epics drop (I had not had one epic drop before that I remember) Ironfoe and the Circle of Flame (WAY cool for transmog if your a Fire Mage)

For anyone trying to farm this, be ready for the long haul. Captains share a spawn with dragoons and if you're unlucky there can be as little as 1 captain per instance. Along with run time to and fro, and a random amount spawning, this is painful. Pray a lower level gets it randomly doing dungeons and throws it on the ah.

I can confirm this pattern does drop for non leatherworkers, got it in about 4 tries on jc/engineer.

Perhaps an even easier way for lvl 80+ characters to get this pattern:

1. If you have a direbrew remote, teleport right into the bar, hit the three ale barrels, run right outside the room and aoe to kill the boss, his adds, and a couple of bargoers. This will cause the door at the back to bust open with a couple guards there. Kill the guards quickly, run out, go to the right and jump down to the walkway to the black anvil. Kill the couple of fireguards there. You can kill the boss at the black anvil if you want. Otherwise you can aim a jump down into the lava below.

2. If you don't have a direbrew remote, use the mole machine just inside the entrance to BRD to teleport to just past the grim guzzler. Find a good spot and aim a good jump down into the lava below.

Swim towards where you see a bridge in the distance (by the entrance to MC). The lava ticks for 600 dmg. After an easy swim to just below the bridge you run up the ramp below the bridge. This is right near the black forge if you ever smelt dark iron. Run up the ramp past the fire guards, kill them if they aggro, and then you go up to the spot which is just before the big room with the two flames that have to be lit. From there just follow the second part of Angryhorse's instructions.

I haven't timed it, so it may or may not be faster than Angryhorse's initial instructions, but if you want to avoid some mobs this is a good way.

If you want all the black dragonscale patterns:

Patron : Epaulières en écailles de dragon noir Drops by Maréchal ragenclume. On average 7 per run, giving you approxematly 10% droprate per run. Drops for anyone.

Jambières en écailles de dragon noir Drops by Capitaine ragenclume in the very last room of the instance. You can easily get there with the gnomish transport at the entrance but if you are farming for the shoulders at the same time it's faster to just keep on going. Drops for anyone.

Patron : Cuirasse en écailles de dragon noir Is sold by the gnome, Lanfiche Brouillecircuit, in the bar. You can't get there by using the transport since it takes you passed the area. It sometimes takes several hours for it to spawn with the vendor, just hang around until it does. To keep going after just buy 6 black rock beers for the guy with the quest. Can be bought by anyone.

Patron : Bottes en écailles de dragon noir Is sold by the dwarf vendor (Lokhtos Sombrescompte) in the bar. You need to be honored to buy it and since it's bop the leatherworker have to do it themselves. To get honored you do a bunch of questchains in searing gorge that finally opens up a repeatable quest in thorium point where you can turn in dark iron recidue. 100 residue gives 1500 rep (more with perks ofcourse). Anyone can farm the residue for the leatherworker to get the rep up.

When you are done with this you can do a run in Blackwing Lair with a skinner to get a bunch of Ecaille de dragon noir and three each of Noyau de feu and Noyau de lave. After that you do Upper Blackrock Spire until you have 83 scales. At that point you should have enough Rugged leather and hide as well.

To make the cured hide the leatherworker needs a Tamis à sel made by an engineer and Sel de Fonderoc.

In total you need:
83 Black Dragonscale
70 Rugged Leather
3 Cured Rugged Hide
3 Fiery Core
3 Lava Core
7 Rune Thread

The quickest way to farm this is to have 2 characters you alternate between. After you finish on one, log over to the second and repeat the run. By the time that's done, the first will be ported to the entrance saving you a few minutes of run time. This way you can skip the dwarf council fight by jumping off the ambassador's platform into the lava and towards the black forge/molten core. This puts you at the lycelum. For extra speed, use classes with a slow fall and speed boost or an engineer. A good glider will get you to the lycelum in no time.

I've been farming this aggressively for about a week. The Anvilrage Captains who drop the pattern are ALL the way at the end of the instance. Use the mole machine and go "Just Past the Grim Guzzler" and blast your way to the end. If you're quick, it takes less than 4 minutes to get to the last room, where you'll find anywhere from 1-5 Anvilrage Captains.

If you clear the instance, then log in with another toon, you can keep going back and forth and be ported right to the beginning of the instance when you switch. Just remember to reset the instance before you start again. Between two toons, I cleared this instance almost 100 times. On the last attempt I got the pattern on the first Captain I killed. I was fired up, and then thought to myself, "Watch it drop on the next Captain..." It did. I got two patterns in two kills. RNG is a fickle mistress... I'm off to test my luck on Ashes!

Okay, giving everyone a heads up on how to speed run your attempts to get this.

1.) Go through the gates on the left. Run straight ahead as though you were going to the Black Anvil for making Dark Iron armor/weapons and Lord Incendius.

2.) Jump into the lava below. Evokers and Demon Hunters can avoid A LOT of damage by staying airborne as long as possible. Any healer class can also heal through the lava damage once they're on an island with Fire Elemental elites, or even in the lava itself. If you can't heal, have some bandages, potions, or patience to eat.

3.) Swim/Jump through the lava straight north. There are islands that you can rest on and use as markers to find your way. You'll see a ramp at the end as well as the Black Forge, and the bridge to the physical location of the Molten Core.

4.) Go up the ramp, with the fire elementals behind you, follow the next ramp up, and turn right. It'll bring you to the antepenultimate room where you need to light two forges. Do that and go into the penultimate room hall then the final room with the final boss.

5.) There are between 2-7 possible spawn locations of the Anvilrage Captains. Once you clear them, you can kill the Emperor for X Mog like Ironfoe. Once you get the pattern or fail, return to the lava and simply let it kill you. It'll start you at the entrance to BRD. Don't go into Molten Core and leave it, you'll hit the instance level cap very quickly doing so. However, by doing this method you'll never hit the 10 instances entered in one hour.

6.) Happy hunting.

After 47 runs of BRD by going through the gate, killing Lord Incidus, swimming through Lava, going up the ramp by the Black Forge, Light Brazers, and killing all the Anvilrage Captains and the Emperor, I've seen 9 Ironfoe drop and FINALLY got it. So this is about 2% of a drop rate, GOOD LUCK!
