Farmed crabs and didn't get the drop within 300 kills, gave up and started mining ore and got the drop quickly after reaching 175 mining. I don't know if there's a chance to get it from ores but I definitely couldn't get it to drop from the crabs.

As far as I'm aware you don't need to keep this after the quest. I deleted it and I can still mine Brinestone Deposits.

This comment is for the uncommon item Pioche à salinite. If you are looking for Pioche à salinite to start the quest Minage-surprise, please click the link. After you have completed Minage-surprise any pickaxe you loot will be the Pioche à salinite. It is used to summon Avarius. If you arrive at this area before turning in Minage-surprise you will be phased. You must complete the quest before you can see the rare or other players in the area. Pioche à salinite can be looted by anyone and used by anyone to summon Avarius. For miners, Avarius drops Technique de minage : Gisement d’osménite and Technique de minage : Veine d’osménite. For non-miners, Avarius is a standard rare who has a chance to drop Perle de mana prismatiques, Varoc de salinite, Pierre de vision, and will always drop a few Minerai d’osménite. Avarius can also be mined for more Minerai d’osménite.

Please keep in mind the rank 2 recipes will only drop after you have learned rank 1 from the profession trainer and they are not a guaranteed drop. This means you might be coming back to this location multiple times to loot your rank two recipes.

Avarius is similar to Flagellant carnivore summoned by Graine en germination and Vor'koth summoned by Appât in that they all require an uncommon item to start the encounter. When Avarius is ready to be summoned a Brinestone Deposit will form in the center of the stone circle. Once you mine it Pioche à salinite disappears from your inventory and a chat message will appear reading, "Brinestone deposits begin to form within the cove".You must then go around the cove mining Éclat de salinite pourpre, Éclat de salinite rougeoyant, Éclat de salinite jade, Éclat de salinite azur, and Éclat de salinite ambre from deposits of Brinestone. Brinestone deposits cannot be tracked by miners and they all have a chance to drop a different colored shard regardless of what you may need. This means it will take some time to collect all the shards as you could potentially loot the same color several times. If there are other players around to help anyone can loot the shards from the Brinestone Deposits once the event to summon Avarius has started. Once the fifth Brinestone Shard is placed on its respective translucent yellow crystal it will summon Avarius.

Summoning location is 37,11 inside a large cove.

Note: If any of the crystals are up when you arrive the encounter is in progress waiting for someone to place the rest of the shards and summon the rare. It has been known to bug at this stage, but Blizzard has been hotfixing it constantly to avoid this problem.

The cave is at 37,12. I got this drop a while after completing the quest and was not able to summon him again but only got some rather useless stones to heal myself or damage something. Possibly have to wait for the next day/week to summon him again?

Has anyone managed to figure out how long these last, or what is the condition for them breaking? Because I just tried summoning Avarius, mined about mined about 30 Deposits, until all of a sudden I was unable to. Checked my inventory to find my Brinestone Pickaxe was no longer there. Still hadn't found a violet stone, which means Avarius remains to be summoned.

Still bugged as of 7/13/19

Had at least 8 people do their quest for the Brinestone Pickaxe and nothing spawned.

I have ANOTHER brinestone pickaxe - tooltip says it allows you to mine Brinestone throughout Nazjatar - I flew all around Nazjatar for 2 hours and did not find any Brinestone ores.

If the axe is suppose to summon the rare, how do you use multiple axes to summon the rare if no brinestones are available to mine?

Edit: worked for me right after reset, but now is not working on any other toons.

Is this broke? I have been checking the cave for almost a week and haven't seen the deposits pop. I do have the pickaxe.

In the middle of the 5 crystals a large brinestone rock will appear when you can summon Avarius. Once you mine that rock your Brinestone Pickaxe disappears and smaller brinestone rocks appear around the cave. You can mine these rocks without the pickaxe! If you go to the cave and don't see the big rock up, check to see if there are smaller rocks. Apparently some people mine the big one then shrug and leave.

Also, for whatever reason, the crystals you get have Unique(5). If you're really unlucky and mine a rock that has a 6th of a color, the rock will stay in a broken state and not despawn as usual. I only know this because I just mined 43 rocks to find the 5th color and left behind 2 broken rocks (Oops!). I hope you all have better luck than me!

Ive noticed that if anyone that has a WQ or a quest in there is in the cave, it will not spawn. I watched a guy complete his quest in there, fly out and I fly away so it de-rendered and flew back, and the crystal was spawned. Seems like the cave is its own little "instance" and if someone that has a quest or WQ there is in there, it wont spawn.

First complete the white item version of Brinestone Pickaxe quest:55531, which can drop from any rare or treasure in Nazjatar.
After you completed 'What Will It Mine?', you are now eligible to loot the green quality Brinestone Pickaxe from Chitterspine Encroachers around Avarius' location.
Once you obtained the green quality Brinestone Pickaxe, you can interact with the stone at the Rare's Location to start the summoning ritual.
You have to collect 5 different colored shards, which are mined from nearby untrackable Brinestone Deposits & put the correct shard into each pillar.
There are 7 Deposits, within max. 50-60 yards of the event, can be mined without the mining profession & have 1 minute respawn timer.
The mining recipes are not bound to a daily lockout & can be farmed.
Respawn timer of the Event is roughly 20 minutes.

If you are farming for the Rank 2 recipes for Osmenite Seam and Osmenite Ore here is what I did:

MAKE SURE you have Rank1 of both learned.

Do the quest with the "white Brinestone Pickaxe" and kill Avarius and go handin quest in town. After that the Green Brinestone Pickaxe will drop from now on.
Then come back and kill the mobs in the cave, they drop the GREEN Brinestone Pickaxe pretty often (usually 1-2 clears)

Wait for the event to be available in cave, go pick up the 5 colored ores to summon Avarius, the green Brinestone Pickaxe will be consumed. Kill him.
If he doesnt drop the recipe you want just repeat, kill mobs in cave until you get a new green pickaxe and wait for the event to be up again, seemed like 30-40 min CD for it to reset. Sometimes I also logged out and did something else and came back later and it was ready.

Repeat this until you have both Rank 2 recipes.

No reason to fly around killing random mobs or rares for the Green Brinestone Pickaxe. And yes you can kill Avarius over and over until they drop same day. It took 6 kills for me to have both Rank 2 recipes.
