These scales are used for a few rep quests (search for Restoring Fiery Flux, or look at the objectives) other then that, they have no purpose. On average, 50 scales will sell for about 3-5g in AH, usually taking about 15 minutes to get 50 as they are a very common drop off any Incendosaurs (http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=9318). usually in drops of 1-4 scales per kill. If you arent sure, Incendosaurs are located in the bottom of the Slag Pits in Searing Gorge.

I've found that the only way to successfully kill these as a fire mage. Is to not be one. All fire spells seem to do half or lower damage on them.

For those of you who are interested, it took me about 20 minutes to farm the 240 of these needed for the Thorium Brotherhood quest, the respawn rate is a dream, the only problem is the gap between some of the mobs, the grind would be made faster with aspect of the cheetah and charge and stuff, i dare say a hunter could do this grind in 10 mins.

I recently (after Cata) completed the Thorium Brotherhood quest line, got the achievement for doing so, earned revered status and turned in 900 dark iron residue to Master Smith Burinate at Thorium Point.

Nowhere during this whole operation did a quest involving the scales appear and I do recall from pre-Cata questing with other alts that this guy used to have a quest where he wanted the scales and other items, such as iron bars, to make something. That quest is now gone. As was prevously mentioned, the scales still drop, but appear to be vendor trash only.

Fan-freekin-tastic. Everywhere I go to turn in rep items the quests are gone! A pox and a plague on whichever morons at Blizzard decided to delete these quests. The Morceaux de sombrefer collected here can't be turned in for Argent Dawn rep either. Does anyone know if any items (other than gear) dropped in this zone (Searing Gorge) have a useful purpose at all?

There continues to be nothing to do with these bad boys. They are still trash and they won't go into the Reagent Bank.

Prior to The Shattering, these were used for three repeatable Confrérie du thorium quests in Searing Gorge:

Restoring Fiery Flux Supplies via Heavy Leather
Restoring Fiery Flux Supplies via iron
Restoring Fiery Flux Supplies via Kingsblood

Each quest yielded 25 Thorium Brotherhood reputation per turn in.

Post-Shattering, they have no use beyond being sold to the nearest vendor.

Wowhead has them listed as Quest Items because they are still categorized as quest items by Blizzard. Once Blizzard gets around to going through all of the pre-Shattering quest items that are still available but not used these might get recategorized as Trash (or possibly removed entirely).

Still dropping in 7.0 with the launch of Legion. Haven't found anything to do with them, I'm guessing Blizzard just forgot about them.

While cleaning out my alt’s bank (a character I leveled to 110 before 7.3.5) I found that these scales I had tucked away while I was in my 50s are now gray. I am unsure if 8.0 finally turned them into vendor trash. But at least from when I’m looking at them now in 8.1, blizzard has finally fleshed out on their change to this item that they first started in Cata.
