Let me clarify a VERY EXPENSIVE AND COMMON MISTAKE real quick with some facts:

The items that are able to add a socket to a necklace are determined by how many sockets IT ALREADY HAS.
If a necklace has no sockets, you can use a Monture de médaillon stratifiée, Monture de médaillon stratifiée or Monture de médaillon stratifiée to add the FIRST socket.
If a necklace already has one socket, you can use a Monture de médaillon stratifiée or Monture de médaillon stratifiée to add the SECOND socket, you cannot add a second or third socket to a necklace using Monture de médaillon stratifiée.
If a necklace already has two sockets, you can only use a Monture de médaillon stratifiée to add the THIRD AND FINAL socket.

So basically, you can use the cheapest of the three qualities for the first socket, and the cheapest between quality 2 and 3 for the second socket, but will have to get a quality 3 for the final socket.

Edit: Confirmation that the above information is in fact correct. After further testing and publicly posted data, we can now confidently confirm that the description IS in fact misleading, and the text description `The quality of this item determines up to how many sockets it can add.` does not mean a Monture de médaillon stratifiée can add up to 3 sockets, it merely means the 3rd socket can only be added by a Monture de médaillon stratifiée.

As of the moment, the below "Tiered Medallion Setting" for a gem socket cannot be used on Collier d’obsidienne, however Blizzard is currently working on a fix.

For those who wonder, sockets are NOT DESTROYED/REMOVED when you upgrade your item to higher iLvL ^^

time warped iL 454 , champ 1/8.. from weekly timewalking raid
CANNOT add socket to because...the "quality" is too low
yet i can add to the raid finder 450 neck.
