Five minute cooldown. It is slightly less threat reduction than Rank 5 (level 60) Fade, but permanent as opposed to Fade's reduced aggro being reapplied when the effect ends. I'm sure a godsend I'm not sure how threat limited some casters (read: warlocks) will be come new encounters and BC abilities, but I'm sure on threat-limited fights like Onyxia or BWL it could have its uses over a generic damage trinket like the DM class trinkets.

Probably not as useful for casters as the dodge trinket is for tanks.

In my opinion these "reduce your threat" items look totally useless. If the data here is correct (-720 threat) all they do is reduce your threat by 1 or 2 damage or healing spells once every 5 minutes. I wouldn't sacrifice a trinket slot for this. If you have agro problems this isn't going to save you.

This trinket is very tricky. It has a chance to increase threat instead of reducing it. In other words, it can backfire, so use it with care :o)

This trinket is useful for DPS classes which have no aggro drop (DPS warriors, in particular) in instances, even though sacrificing a damage trinket does hurt, it's nice to the healers to be able to drop aggro if you accidentally get it.

So how does this actually work? Click it one time and treat is reduced during the whole time untill you're logged out?
Or should one only activate it when a mob starts hitting you?

This item does NOT share the same cooldown as Jewel of Charismatic Mystique. http://www.wowhead.com/?item=27900. Thus, you can use both at same time.

I just responded to a post on the wowhead forums where somebody asked what the best tanking pet was. I posted the following relaying my turtle experiences. You may find this interesting.

I don't know the definitive answer to this question but i'd like to relay my turtle experiences here.

With maxed natural armor, and my toon wearing mostly mail, my turtle has 14143 armor at 70 which amounts to 57.26% dmg reduction. On top of this he has shell shield which reduces dmg taken by 50%. It has a 3 min. cooldown unfortunately. It should come as no surprise then that there is no pet that can take more of a beating than a turtle. This has been stated previously.

The problem is that unlike owls and gorillas they have no aoe attacks and have trouble holding agro of large mobs.

The only way however to get the best of both worlds is to use the turtle. There's nothing you can do to allow gorillas and owls to take more of a beating, but there are a number of ways to make your turtle better at controlling agro.

These include:
Intimidation (BM)
rotating growl around to different targets
Misdirection once you get it

Also if you are alone fighting mobs with your turtle and you pull agro, there are some things you can do to reduce your agro.
These include:
feign death
Trinkets like The hypnotist's watch, The jewel of charismatic mystique, and the Timelapse shard which cast basically cower and reduce your agro.
There's a cloak enchant that reduces your agro from all attacks by 2%

You're probably thinking why would I want to use these trinkets and give up my bloodlust brooch.

These trinkets are used for killing large mobs quickly and that's it.
If you're trying to farm obsidian war beads or motes of water in nagrand for example, it's faster to use volley and the super explodey trap on large mobs rather than killing things one at a time, since their damage scales linearly with the number of enemies they're hitting. (double the number of enemies = double the damage etc.) There's a very real benefit to using these but hunter's generally don't because because they pull agro off their pet, which before 2.3 was an even bigger problem because of the dead zone. When this happens you use the trinkets. In a way it's like having three feign deaths instead of one.

On a slightly different note, there are enemies that hit too hard for you to solo even with a turtle. That's where cower comes in. To my knowledge this is the only situation where cower would be useful.
Instead of sending in your pet and praying he lives you can send in your pet and before he's going to die, you pull the agro off of him and kite while you heal your pet and it continues to do dmg, then you have the pet pick him up again. and repeat. To get agro from your pet you can use distracting shot to help and your pet can use cower. Also turn growl off and on at the appropriate times.

My turtle's name is pizzaface. and just for laughs in shatt i frequently turn on bestial wrath and shell shield, big red sparkling turtle. hilarious.

This has been a god send as a resto shaman in early outlands instances like Underbog, Blood Furnace, Ramparts, etc. I'm not quite sure it'll still do the trick later on but some of you resto shaman may want to give it a shot.

This is pretty much useless for raiding because everyone should know how to hold/avoid aggro but it is useful for early Outland pugs because you might have a stupid tank. Or if you want to go all out on a boss!

The lack of posts pointing out how utterly useless this trinket is and how you should ONLY have it equipped if you have no other trinket to fill the slot kinda scares me...

If -720 threat every 5 minutes is actually a big enough deal to you that you'd equip this over a dps trinket, your tank(s) have SERIOUS problems.

Unless all these abilities disappear in a future patch, using a trinket like this will always be suboptimal.

If your healer is passing your tank up, your tank is undergeared.
