In beta build 8885, every time I milled for violet pigment I got either two or three. So one stack of herbs will get you 8-12 violet pigment.

As far as leveling Inscription goes, this is the first pigment that you'll start needing considerably more of compared to previous ones. From my beta experience I'm estimating that you'll need 10-13 stacks of any mix of the following herbs:

Arthas' Tears
Blindweed
Firebloom
Ghost Mushroom
Gromsblood
Purple Lotus
Sungrass

Changed in beta build 8905. After milling those herbs 12 times, I got violet pigment roughly 75% of the time. The other 25% of the time I got ruby pigment. The new rare pigment from those herbs is now Firefly Dust. From those 12 mills, I got 2xFirefly Dust.

Despite its color being predominantly orange, the absolute best place to farm for violet pigment is in Blasted Lands. All herbs found in Blasted Lands mill into violet pigment

I like Blasted Lands too. You can get just about all of the herbs there fairly quickly, but Swamp of Sorrows is right there, so by the time you've done a circuit there the herbs in Blasted Lands should have respawned.

Here are my observations as a fresh, 58 DK leveling herb/ins. The Emerald Pigment grind was much worse than the Violent Pigment grind was. Mostly because I was in STV and my passes were either herbs I couldn't pick at first or herbs I didn't need later on. Plus STV is a populous zone, especially on a PVE server.

Violet Pigment went MUCH faster thanks to the tip for Blasted Lands here. The beautiful part about the Blasted Lands (other than it is virtually uninhabited) is that it's small. A circuit is over very quickly. I made four trips, including two "pit stops" in Swamp of Sorrows. That and the Purple Lotus I had from STV was all I needed to go from 200-250 Inscription.

If you are herbing in the Blasted Lands for Violet Pigment and are unsatisfied, it means somebody's herbing there. Even if that somebody is you. Either allow time for respawns or try again later.

FYI Swamp of Sorrows gives golden sansam and sorrowmoss now.

Went to farm herbs for violet pigments and all i got was those 2 herbs.

Based on two hours farming in both the Eastern Plaguelands and the Burning Steppes, I have to conclude that for violet pigment, it's best to farm in the Burning Steppes. Yes, the amount of Sungrass in the EPL seems to be higher, but there's an equal amount of Khadgar's Whisker you encounter while farming there. However, in the Burning Steppes you'll also find plenty of Firebloom (especially along the lava trenches), as well as the occasional dreamfoil (3,5 stacks in 2 hours) you need for the next layer of pigments.

After giving ZekkDistor's advice a try, I wasn't getting very many herbs. I found that the area of land at the south of Thousand Needles was filled with Sungrass, and I was able to farm stacks easily to mill into Violet Pigment.

If you want to pick this up earlier, you can start collecting it long before you get to the blasted lands or even thousand needles. In Feralas, southwest of Camp Mojache the waterline is absolutely full of Blindweed. I ended up milling a bunch long before I could even use the pigment. the Darkmist Ruins have a nice high concentration of blindweed in a really small area, and you'll run into nodes in groups of 2-4 on your mini map at times. Whole area's also good for Khadgar's whisker, fadeleaf and even goldthorn

Farm Sungrass in Thousand Needles to get these pigments. Make sure you do a FULL route all the way around! If you dont, your missing alot of Sungrass along the edges of the area.

The gromsblood in Felwood is probably the best way to go for anyone at higher levels trying to grind up inscription, but for a character that is just hitting their 40s and in need of violet pigment, Jaedenar Lake in northern Feralas is definitely the place to go.

The lake itself is just big enough that respawn times aren't a problem with a fast land mount, and mobs in the area are all mid 30s, making them easier to avoid than the creatures in Felwood. And more importantly, the blindweed you'll be gathering has a 50% drop rate on Ruby Pigment, giving you more bang for your buck than the sungrass in Thousand Needles.

Thousand Needles is still (8.3) the best place to farm Sungrass. A full round around the edge is quick and easy herbs!

Just did a full circuit around the edge while flying and got 97 Sungrass and 8 Liferoot.
Second full circuit - 76 Sungrass and 7 Liferoot.

Total time 35mins - 173 Sungrass and 15 Liferoot.
