This is an extremely useful item if you can level up your engineering in time for the 10-19 or 20-29 battlegrounds. This homes in on the target and explodes on contact. While it's not exactly fast, it requires no aiming whatsoever like the other explosives, so if you're close enough to your target it's like an instant explosion. I have killed many a foe in BGs with these, and I was hated greatly because of it. Definitely a great engineering toy.

My personal favorite thing to do is to go into the dwarven starting area on my server (very few alliance to horde) on my level 61 rogre, and set these off, really fun to see little gnomes get blown up :).

I've seen the most satisfying use out of this:

I was posted on Defense at WSG, in the flag room. I popped an Explosive Sheep, and waited around, in front of the flag...

My sheep took off, and I followed it, at walking pace... It traveled up the ramp, went up to the second floor, walked over to the balcony, and exploded in a STEALTHED rogue's face, on the second floor balcony.

This explosive sheep has Slealth Detection? And it's quite amazing... I used it a second time, only to have it uncover another rogue in the far corner of the room!

I'm going to do some research about this... If this is true, I'll be using this a lot more in BG's.

When I first made one of these about 2 years ago for the Gnomish quest, I tried one out. The sheep appeared at my feet and did not attack my target, and just vanished after a period of time without exploding.

At the time, it was mentioned on the boards that there was a condition for use: the target had to be actively attacking you, as the sheep was a guardian syle pet (defensive). This pretty much made it only useful on casters.

Does anybody know if this has been changed? Or if there are other conditions for use? Also, I assume the range is about 40 yards?

Fun little engineering thing :) especially in pvp. And for the history -- These refer back to the actual warcraft games in which any sheep wandering around you can click repeatedly until it explodes.

If the cooldown is 1 minute and they last for 3 minutes, does that mean that you can have 2 at the same time? (guarding flags/nodes in BGs..)

It does "home" on target, but the explosion is actually AoE, so watch out for cc.

Mine has yet to do anything other than stand beside me until I pull the mob to me. When the mob gets close, it explodes.

Edit: Lovely - now they're just standing beside me and explode only when the timer runs out.

It seems to be working if you use it while you are already in combat.
Otherwise it only follows you around for 3 minutes and finally suicides.

The sheep is bugged as of now. It won't target anything, it just stands there for 3 minutes and dies.

Maybe they're making another reference. It's a mechanical sheep that explodes in-game then a real one, so i believe that the best chance this item is making a reference is to Worms, the videogame.

Have you read his post? It is happening to me too, stealthed, not stealthed, whatever, the sheep just stands there next to me until I get so close to the mob that it attacks me. Then, and only then (if within 3 minutes) will it do anything. I think what he was asking, and what I'd like to know is, is this a glitch? The new patch "fixed" the problem (not a problem in my mind) or what. Anyone who had this working before, is it still working as usual now? Please post and let me (and others who are wondering) know if it is still working or possibly what we're doing wrong. Thanks.

What most of the previous posts are referring to is PVP situations against other players in battlegrounds like Warsong Gulch and Alterac Valley. What you're referring to is PVE combat against world mobs, which has a different set of mechanics than PVP.

Some observations via my warlock:

I won't comment on the use of the sheep in battlegrounds since that's been covered pretty well here,
but in world use:
Against PVE mobs, the sheep won't initiate any actions on their own, you have to initiate combat in some way, preferrably ranged combat. :-).

In my case, that includes telling my demon to attack, or using a ranged attack (for me, using a wand, although I expect a gun, bow or ranged spell will do likewise, didn't have a chance to try the spell idea before running out of sheep :-). Any of these should trigger the sheep to waddle over to the target monster and explode.

(Druid Engies will probably have to shift out of animal form to cast one of your offensive spells to get the sheep to attack a mob at a distance. Tangling Roots should keep the target at a distance long enough to enjoy watching your sheep do their stuff :-), although the sheep exploding will probably break the Roots. If you want to go all-out offensive with your Druid, I would suggest starting with Starfire (since it has the longest cast time), then back up while spamming Moonfire, letting your sheep explode on the mob as the mob runs toward you. But I can't test either of those ideas as my warlock is my Engie. :-)

(If you're using a combat pet, keep in mind that if your combat pet (and the sheep) attack and they end up killing the target mob before *you* damage that mob, you won't get to loot the body. But then again, the sheep isn't the fastest critter, you'll probably have at least a couple seconds (before the sheep explodes) to get some kind of damage on the mob first, so use with caution.)

The sheep exploding also starts a global cooldown on all of your explosives, just like using any of the other bombs. So again, use with caution.

As soon as I can scrounge/farm up some medium leather to make the bronze framework to make the sheep, I'll post again with some more observations (like if the sheep starts moving during a long spellcast, or if it waits until the spell actually goes off).

I just used this in WSG and it did just follow me around for bout a minute but eventually it found a target and exploded for 140 DMV on the main target and also an extra 30 dmg to 3 other nearby enemy's,

Great concept - lousy execution. It's rather a bit underwhelming. I actually stopped playing wow for a few months over the explosive sheep's lackluster performance. I worked so hard to level up my engineering and to get the materials to build one which at the time not being in a guild or having a higher level character was pretty hard and when I finally made one it just walked around for a minute then flopped down and died. Very anti-climatic after all that work. I used it a few times in 20-29 BG but rarely saw it do much damage or good.

This is one of those chances WOW could have really made something fun. They could have made it like a ground missile where it goes "BAAAAAA!" then rushes straight at the enemy and goes boom with a loud explosion. Now that would have been funny and a big "WTF!" from the other side. Instead it waddles slowly over and limply explodes. WOW really needs to hire some concept designers and programmers from Rockstar, the Grand Theft Auto creators, to make things like Explosive Sheep actually funny in action not just in thought.

Since the adjustment of damage according to the level in late versions, I think is not worth it doing it. You need to wait have lvl 30 to do the best dammage, but 165 at lvl 30 is not significant.
