This will be the legendary item, the Val'anyr, Gavel of Ancient Kings, that'll drop from Ulduar, the new T8 content raid instance.

What i'm going to say now is speculation, but based on the item's properties i believe it'll be true.

First of all, look at the classes which can get the item:

Paladin
Priest
Shaman
Druid

From what you can see, all the 4 classes have one thing in common: they are the healing classes.

And from the item's text, it's a hammer.

So, therefore, i, with no doubts, know definatly for sure that our new legendary weapon will be a one-hand mace weapon for healers.

And why 1-hand and not 2-hand?

Because priests can only use one-hand maces, not two-hand maces.

So healers, gather your dkp, for this is the hour of triumph...our triumph.

This item will be crafted in a Aitesh-like fashion in that you must collect 30 of its shards to form the quest item

The quest item then tells you to access the Archivum near the Iron Council boss encounter

The follow up quest will then ask you to kill...

The Old God Yogg-Saron, where afterwards you plunge the pieces into his brain, creating the Legendary mace: Val'anyr, Gavel of Ancient Kings.

This has been confirmed to be a Healer weapon. Mapwow has created an informational website for it:

Haven't found the stats on it yet, but so far the Equip effect is:

"Your healing spells have a chance to cause Blessing of Ancient Kings for 15 seconds allowing your heals to shield the target absorbing damage equal to 15% of the amount healed."

There are a bunch of new mace icons, which by itself isn't amazing... They apparently think that there will be future versions of it, although I can't imagine all 10 of the new mace icons being legendary weapons, since not all classes can use maces, and there's no need for 10 different types of legendary maces. At most you have Tanking, Melee DPS, Healing, Spell DPS.

For all of the dps QQing:
In vanilla, there was Atiesh for all the spell dps casters/healers that could use a staff. Thunderfury for all melee dps that could use a sword, or Sulfuras for melee dps that could use a 2h mace. In Burning Crusade, there was not only the War glaives for Warriors and Rogues, there was also Thoridal for Hunters. Not to sound cynical or anything,but you only have yourself to blame if you were not in one of the guilds that was farming the bosses that dropped these items (or items in the case of vanilla wow's legendaries). I highly doubt that there is a person here QQing about this new weapon who saw one two,or all of these items in their WoW lifetime. This does not go without saying that it does seem Blizzard is giving tanks the cold shoulder, but there were many opportunities for dps to get a legendary. In this expansion, Blizzard decided to switch it up a bit and instead give healers the ability to use a legendary.

So, in short. All DPS classes have had the chance to own a legendary weapon, and some healers too. In this xpac, Blizzard gives the legendary to healers and all of the DPS QQ. I have sympathy only for tanks.

I know there was some speculation that the shards would only drop off of hard mode bosses. Just wanted to confirm that this is currently not true. We got our first fragment off of Flame Leviathan in regular mode last night.

Entropy on Bloodhoof just got our first fragment with only one tower up, I still have to see if those drops of bosses without the hard mode enable!

The fragments can drop off of any mode. I ended up getting our guilds first one last night off of FL no towers up.

Got my 1st off Kol. You have to kill Yogg in 25 to complete the qst line.

Val'anyr, Hammer of Ancient Kings
Throw the Shattered Pieces of Val'anyr into Yogg-Saron's maw while he's casting Deafening Roar and defeat Yogg-Saron and recover the Reforged Hammer of Ancient Kings.

This can only be completed in Heroic mode and only if at least one Ulduar Watcher is not assisting you.

Description
The Archivum Console has hinted at a possible way to rebind the fragments of Val'anyr: you must get the fragments inside the physical form of the being known as Yogg-Saron.

It sounds like a long shot, but for an artifact of such power you think the risk might just be worth it.

the spell says it needs 29 cause of blizzard game mechanics: they use 29 to create it and the last one is used as a "payment" and is consumed in the process

As of this writing (12/19/2012) monks are unable to start the quest from this item. Using this items gives the error message "You do not meet the requirements for this quest". According to a GM the devs are working on it to fix it, but no ETA can be given.

as of 5.2, monks can now optain Val'anyr (tested it on the PTR)
