Definitely a reference to Samwise Didier and his legion of Pandaren portraits. I'd like to think that this was a fun item that didn't pan out, but they wanted to re-use the icon for something. Unusual that they're still adding grey items in 3.3.3, though. You'd think they'd want to cut back on item DB bloat a bit, but I guess that's what separates Blizzard from the rest.

Sad to say it but face it Pandaren will never be a playable race or be part of the game in any way other than as pets and stuff like this. its just a flirt with the Panda-loving chinese / asian players. It's not in any lore that I know of and the hero in WC3 isn't part of any campaign maps either iirc. That been said its a shame. Would've loved to be a Brewmaster :D drunken brawl ftw

Actually, Samwise Didier doesn't just like the Pandaren, he single-handedly created them. He often drew Pandaren before they were annexed into the official Warcraft lore, because they were actually his characters.

From the article:

"...for some reason, I decided to do like a panda guy because, actually, also like 'Samwise', 'Panda' is my nickname because I’m kind of a big hairy bear dude, but I’m not very fearsome. <Laughs> So I got the nickname “Panda.”"

Through this personal link, Didier became responsible for the creation of the pandaren...
