This use to be a great item to play with, when it was bugged you could actually float up and fly around a bit. Since they fixed that bug, this item serves no real purpose except to see ahead. Which Warlocks and Hunters can do without.

I wouldn't call it useless. I use it in WSG to see what's happening at the entrance to the other teams tunnel. In AB I use it to see what's happening at other nodes when I'm defending the Blacksmith or Lumber Mill.

I totally agree with Mikezila. It is the ultimate weapon for arranging AB tactics if you are not a hunter.

very useful item, extends the range of all tracking abilities. so zoom out you mini map to max range, use the spyglass and all nodes herbs and what not show up.

With the Launch of "The Burning Crusade" this effect is shared by many engineer-only goggles, most notably the Class-tailored meta-goggles, eg

and
Furious Gizmatic Goggles - http://www.wowhead.com/?item=32461
(For Warriors)

and others...
While these goggles are a better bet for late-level characters, the Spyglass is the only way for non-engineers to gain this effect.

If you use this in battlegrounds, it doesn't load in players or objects that you normally wouldn't have been able to see. Out of battlegrounds, it does load in extra players and objects.

this is a macro so that your ornate spyglass is able to be toggled, that is, one click turns on the longsight, the next click turns it off, without a new longsight being activated:

#showtooltip Ornate Spyglass
/cancelaura Longsight
/castsequence Ornate Spyglass,

NOTE: after the castsequence coma, there is a space, this is intentional to give a second 'blank sequence' to give the cancelaura an opertunity to work

In addition to the above mentioned facts I would like to point out that you can easily make enough money for your lvl 40 mount by selling the spyglass even if you are only lvl 25. Simply use proper advertising "Be a real pirate!", "Great for spying in BGs", "Usefull for herb/mineral vein scouting", "Exteremly good for making screenshots!" etc.

I ususally sell those for 7-12g per piece while the materials costs no more than 3,5g. :)

Aside from battleground use, it's a very nice item to have before you get a mount as you can use it to search for quest items and mobs without running around everywhere. Even after you get a mount, it's still good to have to look into heavily populated areas without stealth. Only condition really is you usually have to have a high vantage point or a wide open area to see a lot without moving around obstacles.

I don't often see these in the AH, so they are a pretty decent way to make money at lower levels, since these are very useful (or just for fun) for anyone, especially nonhunters. I am a hunter and still have one of these just because they are cool.

AMAZING multi-gank tool. Watch the body from range so that he doesnt see you're around with his ghost. Really happy I got this last night, never knew I'd already be having fun with it.

This is also very usefull in PvE if your on a quest were you have to kill a surten NPC, then you can use it and see if he is there, if he just died or if another player is against him at the moment :D

I tested the spyglass. Found a small thorium vein in Eastern Plaguelands (yes my find minerals ability was active) and moved away till the spot it was at was still on my minimap (zoomed all the way out), but the dot no longer showed up marking the vein. When I used the spyglass, and then after I deactivated it, the dot was still not there. So if this item really did at some point extend the range of tracking abilities, it doesn't seem to anymore.

Well, it could be alot more useful, but I do find it can be handy for settling on a hilltop and searching an encampment for the occasional quest mob/item. I don't understand why they changed its basic functionality, given the number of gadgets that mimic other spells and abilities, but oh well. Still a fun gizmo that doesn't take up a slot, have a cooldown, or have charges.

Got majorly nerfed. Now all it does is zoom the camera up as if you were looking through your character's eyes, and allow you to look around. It no longer works like Far Sight (shaman) or Hawk Eyes (Hunter).

I got myself a spyglass today and I tested it a bit and of you look in the distance the game WILL draw veins on the minimap and show mobs. However when you soom out again the mobs and veins will be gone again.
It's like you are temporarily moved to the area you're looking at.

doesn't seem to extend your range as much as just zooming the camera in now... Couldn't watch someone for very far as they rode away from me in Wintergrasp... they disappeared about the same range they would have without it (Draw distance etc turned all the way up)

Now it again extends your range: you can see mobs, veins, and even you can look from ally to horde graveyard and spy players :D (Oh my...! That undead is SO dirty!)

I've found that my old Spyglass now works in a weird way, before MoP it just zoomed to the 100yds indicated in the tooltip, static, simple, mouse around and check anything, move your toon and cancel the Longsight.

Now whenever I use it, starts at the 100yrds zoom and slowly zooms back over time... very odd and annoying. Obviously a bug and please Blizz.. fix it.. please. I love my Spyglass.

You can take some amazing self shots if you use the spyglass then use the sit emote then stand up emote.. It then allows you to zoom in on your character without him or her fading away up close.
