When placed in artifacts keystone slots it is the equivalent of 12 Troll archaeology fragments

I have noticed when doing dig sites in the Eastern Kingdoms that I can only use two different types of keystones in my archaeology journal. I am up to skill level 117 and currently only have slots to enter keystones in the TROLL and NIGHT ELF area. The little slot at the bottom of the window is not there for the others. It's just blank from the page.

Does anyone have information on when or why these become available at different times. Is it a bug? What are the requirements or circumstances that have to be met to start using the keystones for each race?

Based on my experience so far, the ability to use a keystone is entirely dependent on the artifact you are currently creating for that race. An artifact with a low amount of fragments required will not allow a keystone. One that requires a higher amount of artifacts will allow you to use one though you have the option to not use one.

For example, I made two artifacts without keystone, one with, the next artifact wouldn't take a keystone, and then the next one would.

Is there anyway to combine multiple tablets to use on 1 artifact or combine multiple ones to create something? Or is it simply just using one at time?

It seems to be a combination of everyones assumptions. It looks like it has nothing to do with the number of fragments that an artifact requires, it is simply that some artifacts allow the use of these "power ups" and others do not.

I currently just turned in 4 Troll artifacts, and some of them allowed 1 Troll Tablet, and some allowed none. I also currently have a Night Elf artifact that allows 3 Highborn Scrolls, so it would appear that some artifacts will allow you to use multiple "power ups."

Keystones can be used for adding 12 fragments to the next research project that you're on.

Most artifact projects can use keystones, however, some dwarf, troll, night elf, and all of the fossil artifacts, can' use a keystone.

Most common artifacts can use 1-2 keystnoes

Rare artifacts can use 3

As long as there is a slot for a keystone, you can use it and save your other fragments for something else.

Also, Keystones can be used in Cataclysm dungeons if you are a high enough archaeology to provide your group with a buff for the rest of the dungeon.

I've noticed "strange sounds" occasionally while digging over the past few days, but I turned off my in game music to confirm. Every time I got a tablet or rune stone or something similar, I got a whisper. This last rune stone I just got, I heard the whisper, "You... will... die...". Yes, creepy. No, I'm not going nuts. I know what I heard! Anyone else reporting this? I couldn't find any comments mentioning it. I don't have any items in my inventory that would cause this.

With the 4.0.6 change that caps each race's fragment count at 200, it is good to know that you won't lose fragments if your total exceeds 200 using keystones to solve an artifact.

I tested this while surveying Draenei sites and working on Arrival of the Naaru. My fragment count reached 165; I used 3 keystones, bringing my total to 201 and solved. I ended up with 77 fragments after solving this 124-fragment artifact.
201-124=77. No loss! :)

I am sorry 4 asking such a stupid question for you guys. I see in the picture that you have a slot for a key stone so my question is if you don't have a key u can solve it anyway but have a lesser artifact or you can't solve it if you have no key.
I have seen here on wowhead posted the mobs that drop the keys but as i have xp myself in the last world event "Love is the air "(ty god its over) but yo be short ingame it was a very different story.So if is not to much maybe those that already have solve all the puzzles could save us hours of frustation and post some of the places that had the higher drops.

Does archaelogy only give you 5 xp each for completing an artifact or do the higher artifacts give you more xp?

After reading a ton of comments, I felt like I was going crazy because I couldn't find the appropriate checkbox on my DBM. Turns out they took it out and packaged it as a separate addon, DBM-Archaeology.

From Curse:

Originally just put in DBM-Core as a bit of humor during a test phase. The sounds became quite popular and when removed from last DBM release got numerous requests from users wanting them back. Since archaeology sounds don't really belong in the base mod, I decided to bring that feature back in plugin form!.

Now you can enjoy all your old god whispers in your dig sites. What this mod does is play a random C'thun and Yogg Saron whispers from the game files any time you loot a keystone. Archaeology is a profession meddling with the ancient artifacts of azeroth yet no one is paying any mind ot you. This plugin gives archaeology a bit of RP when the old gods whisper you as if they are noticing you meddling with things you should not be, giving archaeology that feel it should have had to begin with.

Hopefully that will save someone the stress of thinking they just couldn't see what was right in front of them, which is the problem I thought I was having.

What is it?
Tablette trolle is the ultimate supplement to getting through your Troll solves much quicker. To break it down:

It is an archaeological keystone that can substitute 12 fragments for each slot/socket you can place one into
Some archaeology solves will allow for up to three keystones to be used - open your archaeology pane and look for the empty 'sockets' that may appear at the bottom to determine how many you might be able to use
You are not required to use keystones when solving archaeological artifacts, but it certainly can speed up the process
There are some artifacts that will not allow for any keystones at all
This keystone can also be used in a daily quest in a couple of Cataclysm dungeons which will give your party a tiny buff (not many people will bother using them in this way)

Examples:

Dent avec plombage en or = 35 Troll Archaeology Fragments; or
Dent avec plombage en or = 23 Troll Archaeology Fragments + 1 Tablette trolle

Zin'rokh, le Destructeur de mondes = 150 Troll Archaeology Fragments; or
Zin'rokh, le Destructeur de mondes = 114 Troll Archaeology Fragments + 3 Tablette trolle

Where do I get it?
There are only two main sources for Tablette trolle:

Digging - when surveying and digging at archaeological Troll dig sites around Azeroth you will have a small chance to occasionally see one of these along with the Troll Archaeology Fragments you collect. The following is a list of all known Troll archaeological dig sites:
Eastern Kingdoms
- Arathi Highlands - Witherbark Village
- Cape of Stranglethorn - Ruins of Aboraz, Gurubashi Arena, Ruins of Jubuwal, Nek'Mani Well Spring
- Eastern Plaguelands - Zul'Mashar
- Hinterlands - Jintha'Alor, Shadra'Alor, The Altar of Zul, Agol'watha, just west of Skulk Rock
- Northern Stranglethorn - Bal'lal Ruins, Fort Livingston, Ruins of Zul'Mamwe, Balia'mah Ruins, Ruins of Zul'Kunda
- Swamp of Sorrows - south of Temple of Atal'Hakkar (along the lakeshore)
- Tanaris - Zul'Farrak, Southmoon Ruins, Eastmoon Ruins, Broken Pillar, Land's End Beach
- Grizzly Hills - Drakil'jin Ruins
- Zul'Drak - Altar of Quetz'lun, Zol'Heb (just south of Gundrak), Altar of Sseratus, Zim'Rhuk
- The auction house - these are readily available most of the time and on average are worth up to 100g depending on your server (approximates current as at 4.3.3)
- If you're digging in Pandaria and trading in your Artéfact restauré for Caisse de fragments archéologiques trolls with Brann Barbe-de-Bronze, there is also a chance you can receive one in the Caisse de fragments archéologiques trolls

What cool items can I use it for?

If you are an archaeologist then you can start digging at Troll dig sites (when they spawn) and speed up solving Troll artifacts.

Alternatively, if you don't want to use Tablette trolle yourself, you can sell them on the auction house and make a neat profit.

There are three rare Troll artifacts:

Zin'rokh, le Destructeur de mondes requiring 150 fragments with 3x Tablette trolle that can be used (I am yet to unlock this precious)
Tambour de guerre hanté requiring 100 fragments with 3x Tablette trolle that can be used (my 7th Troll solve)
Figurine vaudou requiring 100 fragments with 3x Tablette trolle that can be used (my 21st Troll solve)

How many other keystones are available and which races are they for?
These are all of the available keystones:

Fossil - sadly, there are no keystones for Fossil artifacts
