I picked this up pretty quickly when I started in Vashj'ir and a guildie did as well, it's a smart loot item and will not drop if you are not a scribe. So for most scribes looking for this, you will have looted this before you finish the first part of Vashj'ir. If you didn't level there, just do some of the quests, kill some mobs there and it will drop soon enough.

After farming the Giblins and Nagas for a while, I tried the Crabs. Dropped off my 3rd kill of a Sabreclaw Skitterer (level 80 craps on the floor in the start areas)

Got this after killing 30 or so mobs that are right around the zone where you get first quests in Vash'jir, dropped off a Gilblin Scavenger. Good luck!

they must have lowered the drop rate i've been farming this all afternoon and so far the only recipe i've been able to locate is a Jewelcrafting blue recipe Jewelers Ruby Monocle

I found it after killing 5 mobs in vashir so the droprates are probably a bit higher.

Before you go farming it for an hour or two: check if it is not already lying around in the bank.
I got it during questing, put it away because my inscription skill was not high enough and subsequently forgot about it. Apparently it will not drop again if it is already in your possession.

Was killing stuff all around the area, finally dropped off a Pincer (walking, hostile crab man). Make sure your mini map specially says Kelp'Thar Forest. While that is the name of the entire area, I am not sure if it will drop if you are in a sub-zone (e.g. Shimmering Waste).

Like the Origami Rock this is a good, cheap way to get a few levels while leveling inscription. Craft this recipe til it goes gray, it's well worth it.

Got this recipient on my 2nd kill once I zoned into Vash'jir.

Actually pretty cool and people don't use this much because I can tell people stop and look at all the slimes randomly zipping around.

Level 85, Inscription level 483 and it's not dropping after 50+ kills. The only strange thing is that I have skinning instead of herbalism - does it only drop for inscription/herbalism toons?

I killed approximately 100 mobs in this zone without the recipe dropping. I had the idea that the drop might somehow be triggered by beginning the quest chain so I picked up the very first quest in Vash'jir (never quested there) and voila the recipe dropped on my very next kill. Maybe a coincidence maybe not :)

This item drops in Vashj'ir, where Kelp'thar Forest seems to be the optimal place to farm this. The drop chance should be fairly high as long as you have Inscription; otherwise you will not be able to loot it. You will also not be able to loot it if you already have it on the character you are trying to acquire it with.

Whether or not it has any affect on the drop chance to have Vashj'ir quest(s) in your quest log is not possible to confirm without an anouncement from Blizzard's side, but I seriously doubt this could be the case, as it would be a very strange mechanic. It should however be noted that it is of course easier to just do quests in Vashj'ir and get this while doing them.

As for the mentioned prerequisite for this item to drop, it only requires you to have Inscription. What level of Inscription you have is irrelevant, as I looted this item with an Inscription level of 1.

Even if it was coincidence or not, I would suggest that the droprate is significantly better in Kelp'thar than Abbysal Depths. Must've killed about 40 mobs in Abyssal, and due to reading Marloss' comment I moved to Kelp'thar, and it dropped from the third mob :) So as stated above, kill mobs in Kelp'thar! =)

You need to start the quests here. Once you ride the boat over and complete the sea legs quest, you can get this recipe. So, you must have Inscription (any skill level) and also be level 80+. I tried to get this in vain at level 78. One I got Sea Legs I got it on the 2nd or 3rd naga right outside the boat. (Alliance)

I didn't bother until 85 to start inscription. Didn't touch vashjir until 85, started teh chains, went 30 quests in, over 100 mobs killed before I got it. Start your chains, and grind it out.

You do NOT need the questline to get this recipe. I had a friend kill mobs for me and I now have the recipe at level 75.

I can confirm that you do not need any specific lengthy quest line to get this recipe;

I completed the basic Vash'jir quest line, the boat as well as the sea legs quest for easier movement, and then got started. I found my recipe in a goblin plunderer after about 2 - 3 minutes of grinding the various mobs in the area; The nagas, the crabs and the goblins.

And like said; Don't worry about the drop rates. They're distorted because this recipe requires inscription to drop, and very few players has the adequate inscription level when killing these mobs, and thus you get these miniscule droprates. I'd say the droprate lies around 10 - 15% chance.

It took a while for me to get it. It didn't drop until I got to Silver Tide Hollow. Not great droprate, but others would do better.

im inscriptionist level 485. i picked up the profession way after 85 and way after i already quested in here. came back to farm for the origami slime and after about 10ish random mobs i got it from either killing a brinescale serpent or the sabreclaw skitter. i was chain lightning both and not sure which dropped it. i did do 1 quest incase the info below was true and it got it about 5 mobs later. so if your having problems getting it, try turning in a quest and kill mobs in Kep'thar forest. ( i also tdid the quest in there) GOOD LUCK!

Funniest problem with this. I came here to make sure I wasn't doing something wrong because I was on the quests in the second cave area, Decompression, The Warden's Time, etc. and had not yet gotten it. I was 480+, I had linked it in game to check with my addons that I did not already have it somewhere, nope, and the next kill after that I get it... one the Gilblin Collectors. Odd... probably just coincidence but FINALLY done...

I admit, I wasn't up for killing crap for hours, especially in a place like Vashj'ir -_- but I did a few quests to kill the time and lucky enough I was on my lvl 82 Priest that needed some xp anyway.

After maybe 30-50 kills, I was on the Mack and Samir quest and just killed everything while swimming over. Got it from a Clacksnap Pincer!

I'd say just to put on some music and mindlessly do it, goes by in no time at all! :)

Just to confirm, because I didn't see it anywhere else in here, If you had it and sold it early on you can come back and get it again. At 90 I killed about 50 raiders and crabs by the starting zone and it dropped. I had sold it when I was leveling here at 85 earlier on.

if you have super bad luck just like me - completed all quests in Kelp'thar Forest without getting this recipe to drop, just go to the last quest "Blacked Into a Corner", where Zin'jatar Fathom-Stalker spawning non-stop in the cave, if you killed 50/50 just abandon the quest and they will start to spawn again. I got this recipe to drop on second round.

Hasn't been a comment on this recipe in 6 years so I thought I'd share that it still drops in Kelp'thar. I farmed the Naga between Seafarer's Tomb and Legion's Fate for about 5 minutes.
