They are used to give Tillers rep and rep to the individual people, however each has a favourite that gives 900 Reputation:

Actually it seems that you can turn it into any of the Tillers for a reputation bump.

yes you need to be lvl 90 to do almost everything, including gaining reputation with those NPCs and with the tillers by farming.

I am finding that I dig up these on my farm now that I am already a Farmer... but not sure they are of any further use as I'm Best Friends with everyone! :D

To assist you all with Terre sombre farming I made an AddOn which I put up at Curse.

It has almost all the Dark Soil locations. I threw in some other stuff too such as the NPC home locations and the gifts that they prefer as well as a brief guide to questing to help you get started.

And... I didn't forget Dog!
