The tooltip also has "Breed 0" Not sure what that means but possibly could breed companions? or make more of them and sell them? Not sure.

Currently any Collector's Edition, Blizzcon Event, World Wide Invitational, Pet Store, or Anniversary Pet cannot be placed in a Pet Cage.

Other exceptions include the Core Hound Pup, Warbot, Mr. Chilly, Guild Page, and Guild Herald.

The item morphs into the pet quality and adds the pet name and type on the tooltip once you mouseover the actual item, either over trade or in your bag. The tooltip in-game (even if linking the item specifically) only shows the generic item tooltip as seen on Wowhead. I suspect they will change this to link the actual pet information for retail.

This is the 'real' item that actually exists in your bags/mail after caging a pet: things like altoholic will (currently) show a pile of these rather than the actual pet info.

Now, here is my experience of this rare quality item.

The following is the description of this item that I have. The description is a bit different from the above information given by the site.

Pet Cage (with blue color font)
BattlePet (White color font)
Use: Teaches you how to Summon this companion. (green color font)

Since I got no useful information from other players' comments, I decided to buy one and see what is it.

There was a guy in my realm selling this item in AH, and this item was in the category of Battle Pets - Humanoid.
I bought it, and try to learn this item.

However, there was no new pet added in my pet journal. Instead, there was a line of letters in red color showed at the middle of screen:

ERROR. You guys know what does this mean.

One thing I need to note is, this item is called Pet Cage. This thing is DIFFERENT from other pets which you could put them in cages and sell them.
A pet which is tradable could be put in a cage, but even you put a pet in a cage, the name of this item (or we could say, cage), is still the name of the pet (the default name of the pet, not a new name you give it). This is the difference. The Pet Cage I bought, does not have a name, a name of a pet.

I don't know whether it's a bugged item or not. What I want say is, if you see an item called Pet Cage, a cage without a pet's name (Snarly, Chuck, or Muckbreath, etc., for example), a cage may be in the category of Battle Pets or Miscellaneous - Companion Pets, do NOT buy it. NEVER EVER buy a pet cage which you do not know what pet is inside.

I have reported this to GM. And I hope you guys will not waste your gold on this item.

Things are now different. When you right click on a battle pet and select "Put in Cage", it no longer creates a cage, but it will instead put an item in your bags that is the actual pet (it looks like the icon for it, such as a goldfish for "Fishy").

Also, if you did a name change for the pet, it will rename it back to the default (I had renamed mine to "Goldie" but when I put it into my bag it get renamed back to "Fishy")

You can then go to the Auctionhouse and auction it off like you would anything else. And no more secret cages!

I think I have figured out what this item is. I noticed that when I clicked on the item after linking it to someone one of my addons said I had 2 in my mailbox. I had two pet Bubulle in my mailbox.

I put my two pet Bubulle in my guild bank and it did the same thing to them.. turned them into Cage de mascotte

I have not confirmed if learning Cage de mascotte makes you learn Bubulle.

I personally bought this item off of the auction house for 50g to find out what it is, but was skeptical from the get-go. When I found out there was a bug in it I reported it straight away to speed up the process of Blizzard fixing this "bug".

My first guess is that when blizzard changed the caging option for caught battle pets to dropped pets only, the caged pets that were in your inventory at the time were changed to this item, seeing as selling caught pets wasn't an option anymore.

Another example of this are the Spellstones used by Warlocks back in Wrath of the Lich King. I personally still have one of those safely in my bank to remind me of the "Good days".

I am not sure anyone has had this problem, but,was very frustrated with this..
I had multiple lvl 25 battle pets stored...took in and out of my guild bank a few times....I also have multiple other pets. mostly rare and low lvls...I was putting a few pets in the bank when I noticed at least 3 of my rare lvl 25 pets were gone and in their place were "pet cages".
I took a cage out , closed bank to put pet in my journal so i could see what it was and got the dread "INTERNAL ERROR" thing at top screen.

because of the amount of pets I had I am not sure which are gone, but , I AM sure it was ONLY my lvl 25 s that were taken..... not sure where this will lead, but, does not look good from what I have read...
and when you think of it , pretty scary ... does my gold dissapear next?

I just opened a ticket on this issue, and this is the answer I received.

"Greetings __(my toon name)____,

Thank you for taking the time to contact us about the pet cages. I checked in to the pets but they have changed hands too many times. Each time they are moved between players or banks they copy their information but we can only see so many steps back. These have been moved so many times the original information has been lost. It's possible that a software fix will come down the road to fix the cages that this has happened to but one has not been announced yet.

If you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us again."

So basically they are saying you are on your own. Really? By the way, these were a Tiny Green Carp and a Tiny Blue Carp I was planning on selling as a set with a white one.

ok update...
I just got another "answer" they wanted the names (again) and when I first put pets in AH.....how the heck do i remember that?
other thing, they saw i recently 'learned' a corfire imp....well yeah , I have to replace the lvl 25 they took . now have to re lvl that and the others also...not a major big deal for any of this, not even the "cost" or $ lost, it's the principle of the thing...
they also said they could not verify that i had the ones i listed as "lost" .
so end result?, they could give a rats you know what.....and so far I'm out the pets....
I could understand if I was the ONLY one who had this prob, but , I am not...that alone should count for "something" other then a "polite" answer saying I'm S.O.L.
will update as I get more info......till then? keep the baby Faith....

update on the update:
just had a GM contact me , they were more confused about this then I was, but , end result, I think they contacted because i blew a cork .

they said they had sent pets in the mail. which did not happen BTW.... ..no clue why, but I saw no mail, cages removed from bank, I looked in bank (all tabs) looked in my journal and no pets were replaced. never thought to look in my bags...

now.....I had another lvl 25 pet i forgot about which they returned leaving only one that I remember specifically bringing to lvl 25.....this they can not find have no clue where it went or even believe me that I had...
I told them it's a judgement call ...you did'nt believe me the first 3 times , but, you found the pets did'nt you?after i blew a cork on the fourth....
now seriously ...if I was gonna scam Blizz for a pet, would it be for a Terrible Turnip?
really? but they said it would be like asking for free gold ...... EXCUSE ME?
so I am still missing at least one maybe more pets and do'nt think it's goin any further. so for all those with this prob? keep at it you may be lucky and get ALL your pets back...

I purchased a Lesser Voidwalker from the AH. When it hit my mailbox it was called "Pet Cage". When I put it in my bags it still was called a "Pet Cage" and wouldn't let me learn anything.

Eventually I asked for help from a GM and I was sent a Lesser Voidwalker and the Pet Cage was deleted.

It looks as if the Pet Cage is a database-errored object . Any of the teaching objects can become this is they get slightly corrupted. (The "Hollow Reed" to teach you the Aqua Strider, etc)

seems that I read the comments on Pet Cage too late, as I bought one on AH and upon trying add it to my pet inventory the right click resulted in a Red Letter message "Internal Error"... the comments I read on this Pet Cage were dated 2012, and off to the right side was the comment from this system, " Comment Outdated" ... I am here to tell you this is still fouled up and not working properly ...

I am trying to have only one of each pet in my collection, so I end up with spares, which I post on the AH. You know how it goes, you get, say, a Terrible Turnip while gardening, you don't want it, you post it, it doesn't sell, it appears in your mailbox, you post it, and around and around. Two of them have turned into these glitched cages. I can't recall when the first one appeared in my bags, but the second one was there today, after the Tuesday Maintenance. I can't be sure just which pets are gone, but neither of them were leveled at all, definitely not 25s. None of them had been previously owned by other players, or stored in the bank. I suspect the problem is the mail system.

For those who don't know, this item takes the place of a battle pet when in an inventory slot. It isn't a useless item, you can make the following macro to keybind learning all battlepets one by one in your inventory:

After transferring factions and servers I had two TCG pets turn into these "Pet Cages" the GM's compensated me but my pets were unable to be restored, we even tried deleting them and restoring via item restoration to see if the internal error would fix itself, no luck! worthless item that takes up space!

While the glitch is long gone, you can still see a blue in your guild bank log each time when someone deposits, moves or picks up a caged pet.
Its on-click description matches the @TearOfGalaxy's quote rather than the datamined tooltip.

Strangely enough, while the basic The Undermine Journal stats focus on the literal item (that is not sold anymore except perhaps for the curiosity's sake), it seems that Recent Sellers and Current Auctions sections show statistics for all caged battle pets displaying the proper windows.

This is the item ID AddOn and macro authors will need to specially test when doing something Auction House related.

This is because Battle Pets (and to a lesser extent recipes) are a special exception.
