Community Concerns Regarding Large Amounts of Saved Echoes of Ny'alotha for a Corruption

With
today's announcement of the upcoming Corruption Vendor
, many players have expressed concerns over their inability to obtain any Echoes of Ny'alotha on their mains while others have tens of thousands of Echoes of Ny'alotha stored on their characters. The current issues seem to have some distinct parallels to the Wakening Essence currency issues that arose near the end of Legion.
Echoes of Ny'alotha Pre-Hotfix
Before the hotfix, Echoes of Ny'alotha only dropped for characters which did not already have all their Rank 3 Essences.
For players who decided to acquire every Essence for their class in Patch 8.2 or the beginning of Patch 8.3, this character did not receive any Echoes of Ny'alotha.
For players who bought all their Essences on alts later in the patch, their Echoes of Ny'alotha generation stopped.
When the Echoes of Ny'alotha currency was only used to buy Rank 3 Essences, this didn't matter. Why would someone who has Rank 3 Essences need a currency to buy Rank 3 Essences?
The tooltip for
Échos de Ny’alotha
states that this is used for Essences.
Scoured of N'Zoth's corruption, MOTHER can use this substance to synthesize essences in the Chamber of Heart.
However, this currency means a whole lot more to players now -- more than just getting all your Essences.
Blizzard's Attempt to Bridge the Gap
Earlier today, Blizzard announced that Echoes of Ny'alotha would be the currency that is used for the Corruption vendor, in addition to its previous use of buying Account-Wide Essences. With tomorrow's maintenance, all players will be able to earn Echoes of Ny'alotha after one character has completed the Legendary cloak questline. However, this doesn't account for the fact that some players have not had access to Echoes of Ny'alotha for a time since Echoes of Ny'alotha went live.
Here's a section of the
Blue Post
explaining the change. Emphasis mine.
Blizzard
Echoes of Ny’alotha will be much more abundant than before. As we expand the usefulness of Echoes of Ny’alotha, we want to ensure that players
who haven’t felt the need to accumulate them
don’t feel disadvantaged, so we will be increasing both the droprates of Echoes and their costs by a factor of 5. This means that when these changes take effect, a Major Assault will award 625 Echoes, up from 125. The cost to purchase an Essence will also increase by the same factor, from 500 to 2500 Echoes.
For players who don't have all Rank 3 Essences and have access to the Echoes of Ny'alotha system, I think this is okay. These players may not have been doing all their Emissaries, Visions or grinding PvP/Mythic+ but they'll still have a solid bank to work with because Echoes of Ny'alotha are awarded whenever they do their preferred content in World of Warcraft.
However, for players who acquired all the Rank 3 Essences, they no longer interacted with the system. There was no choice of whether or not to accumulate the currency, it was decided for them that they would receive 0. When doing their preferred content of raids, PvP or dungeons for fun, they received 0. Even if they weren't seeking to collect them, their passive activities would have earned them some supply of
Échos de Ny’alotha
. There was no choice, they were never given the opportunity to accumulate them at all.
There were people who decided to collect all their Rank 3 Essences in Patch 8.2. These people have probably done their weekly Mythic+, some raids, Emissaries and tons and tons of Visions like the rest of us, but they have 0 Echoes of Ny'alotha whereas we have thousands.
Echoes of Ny'alotha was once a catch-up system, but the system now benefits those that were "catching-up" more.
5 Times the Previous Amount
How much is the 5 times increase actually helping? I personally have 14,000
Échos de Ny’alotha
on my main and our Holy/Disc priest writer
Jak
has 24k. This is probably on the high side, but my alts (who do the occasional raid and 1 weekly key) currently have around 6 to 7 thousand.
Assuming you do the following content each week, you'll get around 6,500 a week at a minimum. If you grind Mythic+, do your Assault dailies, grind PvP or others, you will be able to increase your currency gain.
1375 for the Assaults
2250 for Horrific Visions for just completing Major/Lesser Assault
1750 for the Emissaries
~1000 for Raid Bosses
1500 for Weekly 15
875 (minimum) for capping conquest
This puts someone who has not been able to obtain Echoes of Ny'alotha at least a week behind someone who does stuff weekly and 2-3 weeks behind someone who has been doing more content. While in the long term, this likely won't matter, in the short term, it sucks to be doing the same content as someone else and being behind for a completely unrelated reason. In WoW, behind behind a week or two can be massive and some people didn't even have a choice in the matter!
History Repeats Itself - Wakening Essences
This isn't the first time an unobtainable currency has happened for a portion of the playerbase. Do you remember the
Essence d’éveil
currency from Legion?
In Patch 7.3.2, players needed to upgrade their
Legiondaries
to the new item level cap by completing the
Un effort titanesque
quest.
While on the
Un effort titanesque
quest, the currency
Essence d’éveil
would now drop from activities such as emissaries, random heroics, Mythic+ caches, Antorus raid and weekly PvP.
Once you upgraded the last Legendary by turning in the
Un effort titanesque
quest it was no longer offered to you.
Seeing some similarities so far? Rank 3 Essences seems similar to
Legiondaries
. Here's where the issue arose.
We
datamined
the
Essence de Titan purifiée
for Patch 7.3.5, which allowed you to create a Legiondary.
It was found out that you would buy them for
Essence d’éveil
.
People realized that those who did not want to upgrade all their
Legiondaries
still had the
Un effort titanesque
quest.
These players could start banking
Essence d’éveil
right now.
Players in Legion who upgraded their
Legiondaries
could no longer collect
Essence d’éveil
to unknowingly work towards a future update. Seems very similar to those who acquired all their Rank 3 Essences and could no longer collect
Échos de Ny’alotha
unknowingly for a future update.
However, in Legion, players found a way to acquire the currency -- sharing the
Un effort titanesque
to the completionists. However, quickly after this, Blizzard
hotfixed it
so all players will get
Essence d’éveil
drops and announced they will increase the drops and costs by
6 times
in the next patch to minimize the benefits of stockpiling.
I do think the current Echoes of Ny'alotha situation is worse because:
All players were offered Wakening Essences at some point versus some players not even seeing any Echoes of Ny'alotha on their character.
Players were able to work around the restriction of Wakening Essences for a (short) period of time.
Legiondaries were around for the entire expansion with Bad Luck protection ensuring that you will eventually get the specific one you want versus Corruption with no guarantee that you'll ever get the specific corruption that you want.
Costs and Acquisition increasing by 6 times bridges the gap slightly more than 5 times.
This example in Legion was the reason that I decided not to turn in the final essence on my main. I thought there was a chance that Blizzard might make the same mistake again.
Conclusion
Right now, those who have acquired all their Rank 3 Essences are likely feeling frustrated, angry or upset and I think that's completely understandable. These people completed the same content as someone who did not acquire all their Essences over the past 2 months, receiving 0 rewards and are now behind. Every Horrific Vision that I completed earned me 150 Echoes of Ny'alotha which unknowingly worked towards a future corruption, and these players should have too. These completionists are getting punished for accomplishing something completely unrelated. "Yeah, I'm behind on my Corruption because I decided to get all my Essences." It's a weird statement. Should they have had the foresight to see it coming?
What can Blizzard do? Some possibilities are listed below.
Reward those who have acquired all their Rank 3 Essences with a large sum of Echoes of Ny'alotha
Reset the Echoes of Ny'alotha currency of all players to 0 (or create a new currency)
Increase the multiplier from 5 times to something higher.
Players who have acquired all their Essences didn't choose to not receive Echoes of Ny'alotha. Echoes of Ny'alotha
have been out for 2 months
and for 2 months, these players thought Echoes of Ny'alotha were useless to them. Now, it's been spun on their head and it's a currency that can turn an RNG system into a more deterministic one and they're actually
behind
, all because they decided to have every Essence.
Hopefully Blizzard looks at some feedback from Echoes of Ny'alotha and the Wakening Essence concerns in any future currencies.
