Fyr'alath Legendary Axe Revisited Post-Hotfix - How Much Better Is It Now?

After
our analysis
of the new Legendary Axe,
Fyr’alath le Pourfendeur de rêve
was
hotfixed late last week
to allow
Marque de Fyr’alath
to benefit from haste and critical strike. Our guide writer, Mandl, details the impact of the latest hotfix and the effect it's had on the Legendary's active,
Rage de Fyr’alath
as well as other remaining issues.
Fyr'alath, the Dreamrender Legendary Axe Overview
Last week, we covered
Fyr’alath le Pourfendeur de rêve
and highlighted a number of shortfalls, potential bugs and unwanted interactions hampering its potential as a worthwhile legendary.
Marque de Fyr’alath
was subsequently hotfixed to be hasted, and for its damage to be able to critically strike. While this is nice, the biggest hurdle on this legendary remains, and as we will explain, this causes a likely unwanted interaction between
Marque de Fyr’alath
and the active on-use channel,
Rage de Fyr’alath
.
But first, let's cover the differences.
Hotfix Impact
The hotfix looks at first to be a very simple damage buff to
Marque de Fyr’alath
, and if it weren't for the channeled on-use, it would be as simple as averaging out a bonus (1+haste%)*(1+crit%) damage per target afflicted by
Marque de Fyr’alath
. It is a very welcome change, particularly considering the stats on the legendary (critical strike and haste). This applied effect remains passive and, unfortunately, as far as we can see, certain application-related issues remain. For Frost Death Knights, for example,
Anéantissement
still only applies a single mark.
That said, the change is a very welcome one. To put it in perspective, on BiS simulation profiles on single target, this amounts to the following:
Specialization
Before
After
Relative % Change
Blood Death Knight
148 616
151 167
1.71%
Frost Death Knight
247 025
248 849
0.74%
Unholy Death Knight
238 877
240 606
0.72%
Arms Warrior
242 266
244 166
0.78%
Fury Warrior
246 799
248 464
0.67%
Retribution Paladin
243 698
246 297
1.06%
This, obviously, has a bigger impact on AoE. If you would like to run your own simulations to compare to before, you can use the following overrides to revert
Marque de Fyr’alath
to its pre-hotfix state:
override.spell_data=spell.414532.attributes=-173
override.spell_data=spell.414532.attributes=-265
New (and Old) Issues
This hotfix may be all rosy just yet. Specifically, this has increased the opportunity cost of
Fyr’alath le Pourfendeur de rêve
's on-use effect,
Rage de Fyr’alath
, for players wearing gear with haste rating on it.
When used,
Rage de Fyr’alath
consumes all
Marque de Fyr’alath
present on
any
targets to buff its damage by up to 50%, and these marks are impossible to re-apply during the channel. You can see a textbook example of this on
this log
, where the Blood Death Knight consumes 7 marks to then spend 3 seconds channelling.
Previously, this channel had a fixed cost: a minimum of two entire
Marque de Fyr’alath
ticks on every target afflicted with
Marque de Fyr’alath
prior to the cast - one during the channel itself, one after the channel because
Marque de Fyr’alath
does not tick instantly (assuming you managed to re-apply it instantly after the cast). With
Marque de Fyr’alath
becoming hasted, this turns into a larger damage loss the more haste you have, a likely unintended side-effect of the hotfix.
To go back to the log, as the death knight as under the effect of
Rage primordiale
(30% multiplicative haste),
Terre impie
(5% multiplicative haste),
Renforcer l'arme runique
(15% multiplicative haste),
Bouclier d’os amélioré
(10% multiplicative haste) and started the key with 4.3k haste (25.3% haste), they were under a total of 116% bonus haste, with
Marque de Fyr’alath
ticking every 1.4 seconds. This means that, whereas before the hotfix this channel would've costed them one tick per mark (7 ticks), casting
Rage de Fyr’alath
now cost them
14 ticks
of
Marque de Fyr’alath
just
from the channel's duration. They also lost a full 4 GCDs instead of 2 during the channel.
Hasting
Marque de Fyr’alath
, while solving the problem of only benefitting from versatility initially, now contributes another problem: the more haste you have, the bigger the loss from channelling
Rage de Fyr’alath
, for two reasons:
Consumption of
Marque de Fyr’alath
and
Marque de Fyr’alath
not ticking instantly leads to a loss of a tick prior to re-application after the channel, a partial tick before the channel (as
Rage de Fyr’alath
does not cause consumed brands to partially tick for their in-between-tick amount) and 1*(1+haste%) ticks inside the channel, and this is per target. At 6k damage before any modifiers or stats, this is quite a lot of damage, and this is magnified further when you consider that
Rage de Fyr’alath
consumes
all
marks, even when it cannot benefit from them to increase its own damage.
You statistically lose 2*(1+haste%) GCDs during the channel, as the channel is not hasted. At 0% haste, this is exactly two GCDs - at 50% effective haste, something which is very easy to achieve under the effect of
Furie sanguinaire
, it is 3 GCDs
While this sounds like very little on single target, the problems are magnified in AoE, as
Rage de Fyr’alath
scales slower than most effects with respect to target count (most effects that split damage do so with 15% bonus per target, while
Rage de Fyr’alath
does so at 10% while also costing you
Marque de Fyr’alath
in the process), costs direct upfront damage, and the GCDs you lose during the channel typically have an increased value in AoE.
A Possible Solution
Making
Rage de Fyr’alath
a fixed 2-GCD cost by hasting its duration and tick interval would go a long way to solving this problem. Instead of being penalized for being under high haste by losing additional GCDs and their associated opportunity cost, this would allow both parts of the legendary - the previously buffed
Marque de Fyr’alath
and
Rage de Fyr’alath
- to benefit from haste, crit and versatility, instead of just crit and versatility. This in essence is not even that stark of a change, and by itself is not a direct damage buff to
Rage de Fyr’alath
, merely a compression of the damage it deals. The main positive effect yielded from this is a reduction in opportunity cost when under haste-increasing effects, or for specs that currently favor haste as part of their gearing strategy. This also indirectly fixes our unfortunate blood death knight-specific issue, where, as it turns out, three seconds is a
very
long time - to the point that legendary users are currently
not casting
Rage de Fyr’alath
outside of trivial segments in high keys.
There are plenty of precedents for this - class spells like
Buveur de sang
and
Tempête de lames
, and even old trinkets such as
Croc de Merekpha
were all hasted, and this made them not feel
awkward
when under high haste.
It would also be amazing if
Rage de Fyr’alath
could only consume up to 5 marks instead of being able to literally consume
any number of marks
even when they do not actively buff the channel.
