Lich King Expansion Incoming? Allied Race Death Knight Textures + Encrypted Lich King Voice Over
10/10/2019 à 16:43
The 8.3 PTR updated with many assets for Allied Race Death Knights! There is also an encryption key with an Icecrown map, as well as Darion Mograine and Lich King Bolvar Voice Over.
from the 8.3 PTR has Anduin and Jaina discussing Bolvar!
In addition to Allied Races, there are assets for Pandaren Death Knights. These are part of BakedNPCTextures, which are textures for NPCs. However, the inclusion of these textures for a variety of races strongly hints that Death Knights would be coming to Allied Races--one of the top fan requests.
We've also put together the models for some of these Death Knight NPCs. Currently many of them do not have glowy eyes yet.
It's interesting to see this happening now, while it's been a long term request, the common argument against Allied Race Death Knights is that the story arc is over - the Lich King isn't making any new Death Knights, and from a narrative point of view the Pandarians and other Allied Races weren't involved in the Northrend campaign, so the opportunity for them to be raised into Death Knights didn't exist. While this is perhaps not the strongest argument in a fantasy game in which the timeline's continuity is frequently stretched to the breakpoint point regardless, it would be difficult to make sense of the Death Knight introduction quests which protrary the Lich King in charge and directing beginner Death Knights to attack Light's Hope Chapel as a future race.
That raises an interesting question - will there be a new series of Death Knight introductory quests? We've previously speculated on the lore connections between
, and the Lich King, with
Le geôlier des damnés
noting that the Frozen Throne is a gateway between Azeroth and the Shadowlands. Several other references throughout
Battle for Azeroth
have also brought us back to Northrend, such as Taelia being the daughter of Alliance hero turned Jailor of the Damned Bolvar Fordragon, as well as Bwonsamdi's mysterious pacts. It seems inevitable that we will at some point be dealing with these loose threads, and likely headed into the Shadowlands as a result, so what better time to establish a new foundation for Death Knights born after the fall of Arthas?
This is a small, but potentially exciting development, as the Death Knight introduction hasn't changed since before the Cataclysm, and 8.3 datamining so far appearing to have little resolution for those outstanding character arcs. We still don't know who or what prompted Vol'jin to appoint Sylvanas as Warchief (although strong evidence points toward N'Zoth, it's not quite been made clear how that would have been accomplished), the extent of Bwonsamdi's machinations such as his bargain to fight the Blood Trolls in exchange for one million souls, or what will happen when Taelia discovers her father's fate.
Battle for Azeroth
has been the biggest character-storyline driven expansion to date, and although we're heading into the final patch, it appears that there are still many stories left to tell.
