Overwatch 2 Leak from ESPN

ESPN has reported
inside sources and BlizzCon-related documents citing Overwatch 2, direct sequel to the award winning competitive shooter, will be unveiled at BlizzCon 2019. The details include a new logo, new game modes, new heroes, and perhaps most importantly add PvE elements to the game. The spoilers were purportedly included as part of BlizzCon preparation materials along with input from BlizzCon staff. This isn't the first we've heard of Overwatch 2 either, as several months ago
that development of a Starcraft first-person shooter and announced mobile project were cancelled in order to divert resources into Diablo IV and Overwatch 2. While Blizzard has a long history of starting and stopping projects, as well as keeping their projects under very tight wraps until they're ready to be announced, this also isn't the first time development of a
Starcraft shooter has floundered
ESPN's leaks showcase a new logo, and purportedly include information pertaining to a system of Hero talents and in-game items for the PvE side of the game, describing a 4 player co-op story mission in Lúcio's home of Rio de Janeiro purportedly in the style of
Left 4 Dead
(though presumably with less zombies or survival elements and more robots). A new game mode called "Push" on a Toronto based map is also mentioned, though without any specific details. Both of these game modes are expected to be playable at BlizzCon, along with the unveiling of at least one new hero, though no information as to whether existing heroes (or all the collectables players have earned for them so far!) will all carry over between games.
is naming Echo, the omnic supporting actor from the
McCree and Ashe Reunion cinematic
, as the newest hero, though it'll be a few more days until we know for sure.
Why Overwatch 2?
was announced at BlizzCon 2014 and spent just over a year in Beta before releasing in May of 2016, and assuming development follows a similar timeline, some fans might consider the five-ish year turn around too short for a full fledged sequel rather than an expansion pack. Esports generally revolve around single titles and don't handle sequels very well, especially in the modern age of collectables as players become attached to their ever growing list of skins, sprays, and stats; a common argument against a potential
World of Warcraft 2
is forcing players to abandon all of their hard earned rewards to start from scratch without porting their gigantic collections over to the new title, which would understandably devalue any new rewards the sequel would want to introduce. While we don't know what route development of Overwatch 2 is going to take, there are several factors to consider rather than a newer game is automatically better.
The desire to create a core PvE element for
is undeniable however, as the competitive shooter has seen a lot of success with its seasonal co-op events. These limited time events have also helped expand the games story, introducing new characters, locations, and narratives that players don't get to see through the normal gameplay; it really feels similar to
success with PvE adventures and raids giving players who aren't interested in the collection or PvP aspect an avenue to engage with the story and play the game.
has developed an surprisingly rich background story for a competitive shooter, complete with supplementary comics and short stories, many of which revolve around the events leading up to the state of the
game world, so it's not surprising they would want to take the chance to both tell those stories from another angle, and rope in fans who enjoy the
setting but not the PvP elements.

As to why a sequel rather than an expansion, we can only speculate, but if Overwatch 2 is meant to be a separate title it would likely be for development related reasons; it's not unreasonable to assume that it would simply be easier to build a new game from the ground up rather than cobble the desired PvE aspects into the existing game. The real question is what that would mean for the original
, with three main possibilities:
Overwatch 2 replaces
- this would seem to be the least attractive option as it would divide the community between titles. Ideally, they would allow both versions to play together, similar to Warcraft III and Reforged compatibility.
Overwatch 2 exists independent of
- Overwatch 2 having an entirely PvE focus, leaving
to handle the PvP side. This would be an interesting decision as it would avoid splitting the playerbase, but it does make things a bit more confusing as they're now juggling two titles, two versions of heroes, and the like.
Overwatch 2 exists within
- making it essentially an expansion pack or "seasonal" update, sharing all the same menus, systems, and existing architecture of the original
. This would seem to be both the most straightforward way of handling the transition and simultaneously unlikely due to the naming convention (as then it probably wouldn't be called
), but would probably be the most player friendly approach to upset the least number of people without taking great pains to ensure a smooth transition between separate titles.
Whichever route the game takes, the foremost question on everyone's mind is probably going to be "how is this going to work" followed quickly by "wait, what happens to all my stuff?". In that, we have no answers; we'll just have to wait and see what Blizzard has planned later this week.
