Rextroy Explains How Sockets in PvP Make You Weaker Due to Scaling

Rextroy's latest video dives into some of the inconsistencies with PvP scaling, explaining how sockets on gear can actually make you weaker in PvP.
Rextroy demonstrated the problems with sockets and scaling in PvP through
Opale sombre polyvalente
, a gem which should increase your damage done and reduce your damage taken.
Without using the gem or legs with sockets, he took 11,350 damage from
Griffes des ombres
and inflicted 17076 damage with
Jugement
.
He then swapped into the same legs with sockets and equipped
Opale sombre polyvalente
, which logically should make him deal more damage and take less damage. However, he took 11,383 damage from
Griffes des ombres
and inflicted 17019 damage with
Jugement
.
The entire video is worth a listen, as he also runs several tests with gear from different ilvls and suggests some of his own solutions to improve the PvP scaling system, namely going back to the foundations of the Warlords of Draenor scaling system. At the very least, the formula should be exposed as in its current hidden state in BFA, it's very confusing for players to determine what is actually an upgrade in PvP. Gear that looks better with sockets and higher ilvl may not actually be as effective as assumed.
Rextroy has previously shown issues with the PvP scaling system in his videos, such as one-shotting enemy players with a naked Paladin due players with worse gear dealing more damage:
Normally Rextroy's videos focus on creative uses of game mechanics, but he explains why he wanted to make a video highlighting issues with PvP scaling:
PvP scaling is a thing that has been with us throughout BFA. My personal opinion about it is that its better than Templates but not really optimal. It is too riddled with bugs and certain scenarios will make good items weaker compared to a lower ilvl one, just because of PvP scaling. This is especially true for rings.
I would suggest you all make your own testing with PvP scaling, since it differs a lot depending on pvp item level.
I was not able to go test everything about PvP scaling in this video, since it is quite a large system.
Hopefully there will be some changes to the system in Shadowlands. At the very least make it more apparent what you are actually doing (healing, dmg etc) and not keep it hidden.
