Shadowlands Survival Guide
The next World of Warcraft Expansion, Shadowlands, will have its global launch on November 23rd @ 3:00 PM PST on NA realms and November 23rd @ 23:00 GMT on EU realms. Simlar to Battle for Azeroth, servers in every region will go live at the same time allowing players to experience the expansion at the same time! Players will be waiting outside Stormwind Keep and in front of Grommash Hold for the first quest of the expansion,
Shadowlands : Une convocation glaçante
/
Shadowlands : Une convocation glaçante
to head to Icecrown Citadel and complete the ritual to enter the Maw and the Shadowlands!
Have any PVE questions about Shadowlands, such as Covenants, Renown, or Legendaries? Ask Sloot in his Shadowlands streams!
Players will start by completing a short introduction questline in the Maw, learning about the environment and the dangers of the zone. After the Maw, all players in the Shadowlands will start the expansion by questing through the zones in the same order: Bastion, Maldraxxus, Ardenweald and finally Revendreth. Each zone contains a
Covenant
that has dominion over the land, who will lend you a
Class-Specific Covenant Ability
and a
Covenant Signature Ability
to use while you level and quest in their zone.
Once you reach max level, you'll be tasked with joining a Covenant. Choose wisely, as this decision is semi-permanent. Consider the
Covenant Abilities
,
Soulbinds
,
Transmog
and the
Story and Lore
of the Covenant. Players will be able to complete
8 new dungeons
. with each dungeon containing a
Dungeon Covenant Bonus
that can only be activated by a member of a specific Covenant. Emissaries have been replaced with
Covenant Callings
, which can be completed by doing World Quests.
Other activities include exploring the Maw for
Stygie
and
Ve'nari Reputation
and the ability to climb
Torghast, Tower of the Damned
. Climbing Torghast, Tower of the Damned will give you a currency called
Cendre d’âme
, which allows you to
craft Legendaries
. Many old player-favorite tier sets, Azerite Traits, Legendary effects and more have returned in this expansion and can be deterministically crafted with no RNG as you get to choose which Legendary Power, which slot and what stats you want on it!
More content is coming soon on
December 8th
with Season 1 of Shadowlands which includes World Bosses, the first Raid
Castle Nathria
,
Mythic+
which contains 3 new affixes and the Seasonal affix
Orgueilleux
, and a new PvP season which contains the return of PvP Vendors.

Once the expansion launches, the first quest will be
Shadowlands : Une convocation glaçante
/
Shadowlands : Une convocation glaçante
. Where you'll need to click the Death Gate in front of
Stormwind Keep
and
Grommash Hold in Orgrimmar
to head to Icecrown Citadel and continue the Quest Chain to the Maw.
It appears that this quest can be pushed into your quest log from anywhere, which means that you may want to park your character in front of Stormwind Keep or Grommash Hold while waiting for the expansion to launch.
Disclaimer: This has not been confirmed by Blizzard and this is based off some tests on the Beta realms. The quest is auto pushed to your quest log when you log in at any location. It is also pushed to your quest log when you relog. If, for whatever reason, the quest is not pushed to your quest log after a relog and the expansion has launched, you will probably have to head to Stormwind City / Orgrimmar where you will be given the quest.
Expect the log in servers to be slow and there to be server queues.
Log on early
and keep your account logged in.
The Legion and Battle for Azeroth launch quests were rolled out to characters at different points in time,
starting early
. If Blizzard decides to do something similar, you'll know when the expansion launches when your experience bar reappears. If you want to be safe, make sure you're around before the launch!
Expect server lag and problems -- it's a global launch with many players that funneling through the same areas and if there aren't issues then you'll be pleasantly surprised!
Leveling to 60
When you level in Shadowlands, the zone progression will be linear starting with the Maw introduction and a visit to Oribos, the new capital city. You will then open gateways to the four zones of the Shadowlands following the order of Bastion, Maldraxxus, Ardenweald and finally Revendreth. In between each zone, you'll get some story and quests, occasionally returning to the Maw.
In order to continue to progress at level 60 and choose your Covenant, you will also need to complete the Campaign quests.
These have their own section in the quest log, but there are side quests that you can do for Bonus experience. There are level requirements that are needed to progress the Campaign towards the end of each zone and you'll need to do some Side Quests in order to meet these:
Bastion
: Level 53
Maldraxxus
: Level 55
Ardenweald
: Level 58
Revendreth
: Level 60
After you hit Level 60 in Revendreth, you can start the final quest before returning to Oribos and choosing your Covenant!
While you quest through each zone, you will unlock the Class Covenant ability and Covenant Signature ability that can be used while questing in that zone. This will let you test how the abilities work, how good you think they and how much you like using them. This may help you choose a Covenant at max level.

Once you reach max level and finish the Campaign, it's time to choose a Covenant! This may be a hard decision for many players as there's many things to consider when making a decision including:

Once you've picked a Covenant, you'll start a questline that gives you the Covenant abilities that you can use anywhere and introduces you to your Covenant Sanctum. This questline is needed to unlock certain features of the campaign, including Torghast, Soulbinds, Legendaries and more!
Note: Portions of this Campaign will require Torghast which is locked until the Weekly Reset on November 24th (NA) / November 25th (EU).
The most important thing that you'll learn about is
Renown
. Earning Renown is weekly gated, with a Catch-up system and will unlock many important features of the Covenant. This includes additional Covenant campaign story missions, Soulbind Traits, Transmog, Cosmetics and more!
Baseline, you'll earn two Renown every week, plus an additional Renown for every Covenant campaign quest chain that you complete starting with Chapter 3. The Weekly Cap for Launch should be
Renown 4
. For a full list of Renown Rewards and when players will unlock various Soulbind traits from Renown, click the Renown Guide below.
Renown Guide
One of the activities that you'll unlock while completing the intro questline to your Covenant is Torghast! Torghast, Tower of the Damned is one of the defining activities of Shadowlands. Located deep within the Maw, this eternal prison is a procedurally generated, rogue-like scenario which challenges players to climb ever more dangerous floors in order to gain loot, currencies, and craft legendary items. Along the way, players will gain extraordinary Anima Powers to help conquer the challenges within, which greatly enhance their power, but can only be used within Torghast and are lost upon exiting the activity. This randomness gives the activity a great amount of replayability!
Torghast will only open after the first weekly reset on November 24th (NA) / 25th (EU).
Torghast, Tower of the DamnedAll the Ways to Obtain Soul Ash
Torghast will not offer any direct gear drops, but the main draw is in crafting Legendaries. Two wings of Torghast will be available each week and completing Layers in Torghast will drop
Cendre d’âme
if it's the first time that you've completed it this week. Only Layers 1 through 3 will be available until December 8th / 9th at which point Layers 4 through 6 will open.
In order to craft a Legendary in Shadowlands, you need to unlock the Runecarver. When you head into Torghast for the first time and do your first Torghast run,
make sure to loot the last boss on Floor 6
as this will drop an item that starts a quest chain. This quest chain will unlock the Runecarver, allowing you to craft start collecting Legendary recipes and eventually craft your very own Legendary!
Once you've unlocked the Runecarver, you can start to collect Legendary recipes, otherwise known as Memories of the Runecarver, from various sources. If you want to craft a specific Legendary, you'll need to collect the recipe! The drop locations of these Legendary recipes are deterministic so you'll know exactly what activity you will need to complete to have a chance at obtaining the recipe.
Legendary Recipe Sources
Legendaries can be created at four
Item Levels
. The Item Level is determined by the base items created by the Tailoring, Leatherworking, Blacksmithing, and Jewelcrafting professions. Higher Item Level Legendaries cost more
Cendre d’âme
, and upgrading a Legendary to a higher rank will have you pay the difference in

Legendary Item OverviewCrafting Legendary Base Items
Our class writers have recommended the best legendary powers and which item slots to craft them on for Shadowlands content, as well as highlighting which legendaries are not worth crafting. Keep in mind that Shadowlands is still undergoing tuning and that these may change without notice. Also keep in mind that "Best" can be both pretty subjective and, in many cases, a very close call. This list should be viewed with this is mind. As always, when the time comes, sim yourself if possible for your role.

Professions have an important role this expansion, as every player who wants to craft a Legendary will need a Legendary Base Item.
In order to craft Legendary Base Items, you must have Blacksmithing, Leatherworking, Tailoring, or Jewelcrafting and have capped out your skill in the Profession at 100 Skill. At this point, you can head to your profession trainer and learn the patterns for the Legendary Base Armor. These have a different naming scheme for armor type:
Blacksmithing
(Plate) - Shadowghast
Leatherworking
(Mail) - Boneshatter
Leatherworking
(Leather) - Umbrahide
Tailoring
(Cloth) - Grim-Veiled
Jewelcrafting
(Necks/Rings) - Shadowghast
All of the items in this category will likely be sought after by players, as they'll need one of these every time they want to craft or upgrade a Legendary in Shadowlands! These crafts are likely going to be expensive due to the materials involved.
You only learn Rank 1 of these crafts from your Profession Trainer. Any player who uses a
Rank 1
Base Legendary Item to craft a Legendary will get an
Item Level 190 Legendary
. In order to unlock a higher Rank, and therefore craft a higher Item Level legendary, you'll need to learn the recipe. Each Legendary base item has an experience bar and once the XP bar is filled, you will unlock the next Rank.
Unfortunately, it seems that the experience gained for craft one base item type does NOT carry over to the experience gained from crafting another item type.
Here's how much experience you will get for crafting each Rank of a Legendary Base Item. In addition, this chart shows you how much experience you need in order to unlock the recipe for the next rank.

In other words, at 5 XP per Rank 1 craft, you'll need to craft
15
Rank 1s of an item in order to craft Rank 2. Then, you'll need to craft 15 Rank 2s in order to unlock Rank 3, and 15 Rank 3s to unlock Rank 4. You don't have to craft the most upgraded rank, you'll just get less experience for the Craft.

At launch, you'll only be able to buy Honor Gear but only upgrade it to Rank 3. Once you complete your Renown activities during Week 2, you'll be able to upgrade your gear to Rank 5 or Item Level 184. This is the same item level as Mythic dungeons, making them an excellent way to fill in any missing pieces at the end of Week 2 of the expansion.
Once you choose your Covenant, you will eventually be sent to the Maw and meet Ve'nari! After completing the intro, you can return to the Maw at any point. Remember, you're not allowed to mount in the Maw!
Increasing Movement Speed in the Maw
There are daily and Weekly quests that are marked on your map. In addition, there are events and rares that are not marked on the map that you'll have to explore to find. Completing these activities in the Maw will earn you
Stygie
and also Ve'nari reputation. Ve'nari sells many awesome items including an item to rank up your Conduits (
Fragment de réalité déliée
), an item to add a socket (
Appareil de réalignement spatial
), permanent Torghast upgrades and more.
Ve'nari Reputation Guide
However, completing activities in the Maw like daily/weekly quests, completing events, saving souls and even just spending time in the Maw will incur
L’œil du Geôlier
, which will increasingly torment you with deadlier effects. You can see your Eye of the Jailer threat level whenever you are in The Maw by simply looking over the HUD element that will appear on the top portion of your screen.
The only way to lower your Eye of the Jailer threat levels is with the daily reset, which will reset your threat levels back to 0
. This means that you'll only be able to spend a certain amount of time in the Maw each day.
There are 5 levels of Eye of the Jailer threats, each one more dangerous than the previous one. The effects of the Eye of the Jailer will not affect you while in Ve'nari's Refuge. Here is what each level does:
Tier 1:
Œil du Geôlier : Guide spirituel
- Soulseekers are now hostile to you.
Tier 2:
Œil du Geôlier : Afflux d’âmes
- Towers will periodically attack your location, damaging you and chaining you in place.
Tier 3:
Œil du Geôlier : Traque
- The Jailer will periodically send assassins after you.
Tier 4:
Œil du Geôlier : ravisseurs ailés
- Stygian Abductors now seek your demise.
Tier 5:
Extermination immédiate
- Your healing taken is increasingly reduced. When your healing taken reaches -100%, you suffer Shadow damage until you die.
The Maw Guide
As soon as you reach level 60 and complete your chosen covenant's introductory quest chain, you will unlock World Quests. You will then be required to complete a Calling (which are the new Emissaries) in order to progress in the Covenant story. For World Quests, gear starts at a minimum of Item Level 148+ and Conduits start at Item Level 145.
World Quests rewards still scale with your item level; the higher your average item level, the higher item level the World Quest rewards will be. However, in Shadowlands, World Quests rewards will also scale at certain
Renown levels
, specifically at
Renown 10
,
Renown 16
and
Renown 29
.
Whenever you complete a World Quest or calling, you'll gain reputation with the faction that inhabits the zone. There are also Weekly Quests for PvP and PvE that are located in Oribos, where you can choose which faction you want the Reputation to go towards.
There are 4 main factions in the Shadowlands:
Transcendés
of Bastion
Armée immortelle
of Maldraxxus
L’Hallali
of Ardenweald
Cour des Moissonneurs
of Revendreth
At Honored, Revered and Exalted reputation, you will unlock gear rewards from the quartermaster that start at item level 164 for Honored and scale to Item Level 200 for Exalted, which is equal to Normal Castle Nathria gear! In addition, there are also cosmetic items that can purchased from these vendors once you have earned enough reputaiton.

Conduits are powerful relics that you can place into specific slots in your Soulbind tree. While you won't have that many slots active at the start of the expansion, you will eventually unlock more and more as your Renown increases. Once you add a Conduit to your collection, they can be socketed multiple times, just like Essences.
However, each time you place a Conduit in your Soulbind tree, it'll cost one "Conduit Energy". You can have a max of 10 Conduit energy and will gain one Conduit energy every day. You will also gain one Conduit energy whenever you add a new conduit to your collection.
Conduits have multiple ranks which increase the effectiveness of the Conduit. Ranks are determined by the Item Level at which the Conduit drops, according to the chart below.

Conduits can drop from World Quests, World Bosses, PvP, Raids and Dungeons and drop as push loot -- they don't take up the loot spot of other items. For all the current known sources of Conduits, check our Guide below.
Drop Sources for Conduits
Coming Soon
We're expecting that World Bosses will become available on
December 8th (NA) / December 9th (EU)
with the Launch of Season 1. There are 4 initial World Bosses in the Shadowlands, one for each of the major leveling zones, which award item level 207 loot. One World Boss should be available each week.
Defeating World Bosses will be important as they drop special Legendaries recipes not available anywhere else and Rank 5 versions of Covenant Conduits which currently have no other known source. These are the Legendary recipes that drop off a specific World Boss:

We're currently unsure of the World Bosses rotation and what boss will be up week to week.
Mythic+ Keystones are an additional system of challenge and rewards for dungeons, which increase the item level of rewards obtained and may be run an unlimited number of times each week for additional rewards as long as you have and complete the relevant keystone, rather than using a traditional lockout system. Mythic+ dungeons are also timed and subject to various affixes as the keystone level increases, which rotate on a weekly basis.
Season 1 Mythic+ Guide
End of dungeon chests will only have 1 piece of Loot baseline, although this can be increased by completing the dungeon in time and completing Keystones above +15. Season 1 will also include a new Seasonal affix starting at Keystone level 10,
Orgueilleux
which is similar to a single target Reaping affix. However, when you kill the mob that is spawned every 20% Trash Count, you gain a damage buff for 60 seconds!
There are also 3 new affixes being added to the Mythic+ rotation:
Inspirant
,
Malveillant
and
Tourbillonnant
. The
Grouillant
and
Fébrile
affixes will also be removed in Season 1 of Mythic+.
This is the current item level reward table for Shadowlands Season 1 which has been taken from the Shadowlands Beta. This shows the item level of the rewards from the End of Dungeon Chest and Weekly Great Vault cache. As this was taken from the Beta, this may have changed for Launch.

Season 1 of PvP in Shadowlands will begin on
December 8th (NA) / December 9th (EU)
PvP Conquest Vendors are back! You'll be able to collect a weekly amount of Conquest from Rated PvP in order to buy the exact piece of gear that you want off a PvP Conquest vendor in Oribos!
Once you've obtained your Conquest PvP gear and achieved the required rating, you'll be able to upgrade that piece of gear to a higher Item Level with Honor.
When Season 1 launches, this will activate the
The Great Vault
. This is the Shadowlands equivalent of the Mythic+ and PvP Weekly Cache from Battle for Azeroth, but it allows players to choose what content they complete for their weekly rewards and gives players multiple rewards to choose one item from.
Completing objectives each week adds a additional option to your Great Vault. Once a week, on reset, you will be able to open the Great Vault and select one item from the options that were added to your Vault the previous week. This should make getting specific pieces of loot and upgrades significantly easier, although there is still a random factor.
Note: You will only ever get one item per week. Completing additional objectives only increases the number of choices from which you can select your one piece.
Completing the following objectives adds choices to your Vault:
