Jaina Proudmoore, the Daughter of the Sea, and Gelbin Mekkatorque, King of the Gnomes and High Tinker, show they are forces not to be underestimated in the Siege of Dazar'alor opening cinematic. In this article, we'll analyze the cinematic in greater detail, pointing out interesting details, visual throwbacks, and effective audio cues!
Spoiler Warning
We've also analyzed the Rastakhan cinematic, which you can read about
here
!
Alliance Fleet, not Kul Tiras?
The cinematic starts with the Zandalari almost gleefully expecting the Alliance, noting that they’re like “fish jumping into their nets.” However, the ominous music indicates this is not a triumphant moment, raising tension even as we watch the Zandalari confidently prepare for an attack.
The Alliance fleet is also quite small…and yes, we said the
Alliance
fleet, not
Kul Tiras
fleet, which we know is pretty robust after Jaina located them earlier in Battle for Azeroth. The use of the small Alliance fleet, which was damaged pretty badly at the start of Battle for Azeroth (
L’extraction de Hurlevent
), should signal to the Zandalari that the Alliance have another plan. Instead, they think it should be an easy fight.

The Zandalari then start firing the ballista at the Alliance ships. Jaina is unfazed and demonstrates remarkable calm as she directs the ship to keep moving forward. While in
Thros, the Blighted Lands
Jaina may have been plagued by regret for her past actions, here she is confidant, knowing that the ships will likely take damage from the ballista for a greater long-term plan. But…what is the plan?
There’s a nice interaction between Jaina and her brother Tandred, still looking a bit sloppy with his open shirt and worn hat, where they refer to each other as Captain and Lord Admiral. It’s nice to see how close Jaina’s remaining family has gotten since the start of Battle for Azeroth (
Un calme précaire
).

If you’re a Horde player unfamiliar with Tandred, and why he looks like a hot mess, his fleet was captured by Azshara early in Battle for Azeroth, saved by Jaina when she used the Lord Admiral’s Pendant to teleport them to Boralus. Being at sea for so long, it’s understandable why he looked disheveled as the Captain then—but it’s funny he’s still unkempt now. Maybe he views it as a good luck charm?
Tandred in the 8.0 Boralus cinematic vs Tandred in the 8.1 Dazar'alor cinematic. He seems to have lost his shirt and vest from the 8.1 War Campaign video above.
The Big Red Button
Shaw then reports that the Alliance stealth mission was a success, and Jaina gives the signal for Mekkatorque to activate his device! We’re still not sure what he has planned, but it involves a big red button—a hallmark of great Engineering. Like the
Battle of Lordaeron
, it seems like Mekkatorque’s inventions will come in very handy when fighting the enemy. Every Engineering device has a drawback, however, and this one requires them to be in very close range to use (plus, the box looks a bit precarious).
Tensions rise between both sides as the Alliance inch forward, waiting to hit the button while the Horde increase the rate of fire from their ballistae. Just when Mekkatorque is about to activate his surprise, finally flashing green, an explosion hits the boat!
From Mimiron to Mekkatorque--red buttons are a hit.
The camera cuts to the dock, burning with a hole in the center… and no Mekkatorque. With Mekkatorque gone, the Alliance attack could be over before they even land! This is a bit of ominous foreshadowing for the
Mekkatorque encounter
, and also drives home to the audience that Mekkatorque and his devices are very important to the Alliance. We haven’t really seen Gnomes play a large role in cinematics before, so this ups the stakes.
There’s no time to worry about the Alliance’s backup plan, with Mekkatorque missing, as Jaina pulls a badass move and deflects a ballista bolt with an Arcane shield!
Thankfully Mekktatorque returns, pulling himself out of the debris with some effort—his goggles are lost and his face is smudged with dirt. (By the way, seems a bit risky to keep him on the deck without any protection—seems a bit short sighted. Maybe an Arcane Shield would have been great on him, or a Frost Nova on the device so it doesn't fall over?) More importantly for the Alliance plan, his contraption has tilted over—hope it’s not broken! As the music continues to soar, heightening the tension, the ballistae continue to fly. Mekkatorque strains to pull up the device (almost as large as he is), and even Jaina looks exhausted from maintaining such a large shield. This is a bit troubling as Jaina effortlessly flew a magical ghost ship, firing arcane cannons, during the Battle of Lordaeron. Perhaps Jaina does better with ranged threats, similar to how ranged DPS suffer in melee range.
Kul Tirans Do Look At Explosions
Mekkatorque finally fixes the device, turning green once again! The music fades with only the “beep beep beep” of the device coming through. He slams the red button, and we see what his plan is all about! Remember those bombs the Alliance set early on in the War Campaign? They all detonate now, blowing up most of the Zandalari fleet. Amazing job, Mekkatorque! Bad job, Zandalari, for not examining your prized fleet more frequently.
At the finale of the 8.0 Alliance War Campaign, on the
Strike on Zuldazar
chapter, the Alliance adventurers plant Remote-Detonation Bombs at the Zandalari ships on the quests
Le sabotage du Pa’ku
(for the ships stationed at the Isle of Fangs) and
Juste sous leur nez
(for the ships stationed at Warport Rastari). According to Kelsey Steelspark, key member of the Gnomeregan Covert Ops, these bombs are the latest and most effective inventions of current gnomish technology.
Amidst the debris of the gilded Zandalari fleet, Jaina’s ships surge ahead. She pulls up her hood, echoing the final shot of “Warbringers Jaina,” in which she sings “Beware the Daughter of the Sea. Beware…beware…of me.” Her story has come full circle--in “Warbringers” she is shunned and scorned by the people of Kul Tiras, and now she’s their Lord Admiral, leading the Kul Tiras and Alliance to strike at the heart of the Zandalari and the Horde.
Jaina's hood means business.
As Jaina approaches Dazar’alor, the music transitions into the signature track “
A Call to Arms
,” ending the cinematic on a triumphant note. The Alliance fleet, crushed by Talanji calling on the power of Rezan early in Battle for Azeroth, has now won this naval skirmish with the legendary Zandalari fleet, docking at the port of Dazar’alor. However, what they hope to get out of attacking Dazar’alor is still a bit unclear. Reclaiming Alliance pride? Capturing the city? For Horde players watching this cinematic, it may feel exceptionally weird to watch this cinematic as you’ve gotten to be quite friendly with sympathetic characters like Talanji—whose home is now under attack.
Raid Foreshadowing
While the cinematic ends on a high note for the Alliance, by destroying part of the Zandalari fleet, it also reveals the limitations of their leaders. Mekkatorque may have amazing inventions, but he’s physically frail and seems to be the only one that can create or use such contraptions, leaving the Alliance at a loss should he be incapacitated. Jaina is an amazing mage, able to protect part of the boat through massive explosions, but at some point she'll be outnumbered and needs to recognize her limitations. Both concerns with Mekkatorque and Jaina will return as we face off against them later in Dazar’alor.
The Zandalari clearly lose this fight, exposing their weaknesses. They naively fell into the Alliance’s stealth mission trap from the War Campaign… and failed to learn from their mistakes. They underestimated the Alliance, assuming that their fleet would foolishly sail straight into their city without any tricks up their sleeve. This would be a bad judgment call in any situation, but especially foolish considering they'd been tricked once already. Now, they face the Alliance invasion directly, placing their city and the heart of their empire under siege.
Let us know your thoughts about the cinematic in the comments and if you have your own spin on the analysis! BTW, if you are a Horde player, you may need some additional context for the title of this article--it's based on
Oh, la belle bleue !
, an achievement in the Alliance War Campaign.
