. We went through this questline and summarized it!
WARNING: Story spoilers below! Do not continue scrolling if you don't want to be spoiled!
During the Chains of Domination questline, a chapter in specific gives answers to some mysteries uncovered earlier in the expansion. Chapter 5,
The Unseen Guests
, starts in Keeper's Respite with Baroness Vashj, although the one you initially talk to is revealed to be a fake! The real Baroness Vashj shows up and promptly defeats the fake, which is revealed to be an infiltrated dreadlord. After a quick audience with the Primus (who seems very aware of the nathrezim, he sends us to Revendreth to get a specific ally - The Stonewright, the Harvester of Wrath.
For those who do not remember, the Stonewright is one of the Harvesters that did not join Prince Renathal's rebellion, believing they could not defeat Sire Denathrius and the Jailer, and her allegiance after Denathrius's imprisoned remained unknown. The Primus sends you and Vashj to Revendreth, with a very formal but firm note written to both Renathal and the Stonewright.
The unseen guests walk among us once again.
We have not ascertained their long term goals, nor are we aware of how long it has been since they returned to the Shadowlands. If indeed, they ever truly left.
I have dispatched this Maw Walker and a Baroness of the House of Eyes with experience in hunting nathrezim. I would ask for you to introduce them to the Harvester of Wrath.
We are out of time for niceties and the Shadowlands needs the Harvester of Wrath to join a side. I expect no failure.
- The Primus
To the Stonewright, Harvester of Wrath.
The nathrezim have returned.
I am sending you resources to help deal with this threat. I challenge you to remind the Shadowlands of the meaning of Wrath.
The time for neutrality is over. Only together we can stand against the might of the Banished One.
- The Primus
During this initial questline, we ride with Prince Renathal to encounter the Stonewright, and on the chariot ride, he explains to use more about the nathrezim, and gives a lot of answers on their origins - How they were created, and how the Ember Ward, now razed by the Light, was originally intended for them to dwell in.
Prince Renathal: Countless ages ago, just after the first venthyr were sired, Denathrius unveiled another creation. The nathrezim.
Prince Renathal: Forged to be the ultimate infiltrators, they bore the influence of Death into the realms of our rivals... as well as the worlds of the living.
Prince Renathal: Despite their subtlety, one of these incursions was discovered.
Prince Renathal: In response, the full wrath of the Light fell upon Revendreth, setting ablaze the ward once held by the nathrezim.
Prince Renathal: The armies of Maldraxxus did not rise up to defend us, so the Stonewright carved her Stone Legion to strike back against the Light.
Prince Renathal: Once the naaru were routed, the Stonewright turned her anger upon the nathrezim, blaming them for the loss of so many of her children.
Prince Renathal: The conflict was ended by Denathrius, who said he would exile them to a world beyond the Shadowlands.
Prince Renathal: Denathrius never told me what became of the nathrezim. Only later did I learn that mortal souls had come to know them by another name: the dreadlords.
As we arrive to the Stonewright, she tells us a bit about how she was the one that banished the nathrezim from Revendreth, but recognizes that something is not right within the caravan. One of the infiltrators is there!
Prince Renathal: My dear Stonewright, Harvester of Wrath, wielder of Elu--
The Stonewright: Chelra the Bladewall. How have you been, my child?
Chelra the Bladewall: Mother of Stone. You honor me with your concern. I am well.
The Stonewright: Impressive, considering Denathrius had you beheaded after casting Renathal into the Maw.
The Stonewright: Reveal yourself, infiltrator.
Nal'ragas: Always so clever. Only... I am not the infiltrator. I am the distraction.
Nal'ragas: Now! Seize the medallion! Remove the interlopers!
As Nal'ragas manages to steal the Medallion of Wrath from the Stonewright, we're sent to Dominance Keep to investigate more infiltrated nathrezim. During this questline, you do interact with two former villains who worked as a group in life - Baroness Vashj and Kael'thas Sunstrider. Turns out an old known enemy is in charge of this mission - our old known friend, the dreadlord Mal'Ganis. Nal'ragas is slain during this encounter, but Mal'ganis escapes once more.
Once it is discovered that dreadlords are heavily infiltrated within the ranks of the Venthyr, we're sent to their covenant sanctum of Sinfall, to investigate who else might be in league with Mal'Ganis. We find out NPCs such as the LFR weapon vendor and the innkeeper of Sinfall were dreadlords all along, with Hunters who have played Vanilla or Classic being very familiar with one of them!
With the information extracted from Sinfall, it is discovered that Mal'ganis is in Dawnkeep Tower, and his plan is finally revealed all along: The nathrezim were never fully banished from Revendreth, but instead were sent away and remained loyal to Sire Denathrius this entire time. Mal'ganis serves as a distraction long enough for the nathrezim to raze Dawnkeep Tower and rescue Remornia and Denathrius. Mal'ganis is kept prisoner within the Venthyr, but at what price?
Thank you for playing, valiant champion.
As Mal'ganis is defeated, he reveals his plan.
This was all a distraction! While you have been fighting him, the other nathrezim went after the true target: the only master they have ever served.
Prince Renathal: Mal'Ganis, we need not be enemies. Join us to save Revendreth and end your exile.
Mal'Ganis: We were never in exile, you gullible fool. It was all part of the Master's plan!
Mal'Ganis: Keep your trinket and your realm. They are dust in the face of our Sire's true ambition.
Mal'Ganis: If only you had just obeyed...
