Artist Rogier Stam has created a 3D cello prop inspired by Tyrande Whisperwind for a Creating Stylized Game Assets course. For this assignment, the students had to essentially participate in a game studio art test--creating a prop for an existing current game, using the aesthetics of that universe.
Stam chose to create a prop for World of Warcraft, using the character of Tyrande Whisperwind for inspiration including her color scheme, pet owl, and Night Elf culture. Over on
ArtStation
, he's posted some of his concept inspirations and early sketches, all highlighting the Night Elf aesthetic.
He even wrote a short concept blurb, explaining the lore of this instrument:
As is tradition, every member of the Whisperwind family receives a musical instrument at a young age. They are taught how to play it, maintain it and above all, cherish it. Although this cello currently belongs to Tyrande Whisperwind, it is often played by her wisp relatives while it is stored away.
Over on
Reddit
, he explained a bit more of the process designing the cello:
I use Photoshop to sketch out my design, model it in Maya, export it to 3DCoat and back to Photoshop. There's different programs you can use though, for example Blender is also a great alternative to Maya for 3D modeling. If you're new to 3D programs I would experiment with Blender first.
While the Night Elf story recently has focused on the destruction of Teldrassil and the trauma in the aftermath, props like these remind us that the Night Elves had a rich civilization with entertainment and leisure in between wars. Music is also such a driving force of the player's experience in Warcraft, but we don't really see many characters playing music in-game (although there's a neat
Night Fae harp
), so props like this help flesh out the universe.
Another fun detail is that this prop was made for
Ashleigh Warner
's CGMA course, and Ashleigh currently serves as a Senior Prop Artist on WoW, responsible for the Elekk plushie, Love is in the Air target dummy, Naga weapons, and much more!
