WoW Economy Weekly Wrap-Up
Welcome to the 86th edition of the WoW Economy Weekly Wrap-up! In this edition we're taking a look at a potential Undermine Journal for Classic WoW, a new 30-day Token Challenge from The Lazy Goldmaker, updates to the gold-making streamer directory and the late monthly giveaway!
If you're new to this series or want to re-visit past posts, you can

My name is
Gumdrops
and I’m the lead moderator for the
/r/woweconomy subreddit
and the accompanying
Discord server
. I am also the Support/Community Manager & User Evangelist for
TradeSkillMaster
, the Auction House addon suite for World of Warcraft. I stream on Twitch for
Method
and my focus is on mentoring and tutoring the WoW community in all things gold-making. I hope to cover and showcase some of the interesting topics, discussions, content and guides that have been going on over the last week in the gold making community. Some that you might have missed as a veteran gold maker, or you might be interested in checking out for the first time as a new or aspiring ‘goblin’.
The format will not be that of a traditional guide, but links to further reading with commentary and opinions of my own. I will be looking at the bigger picture, the decision making and thought processes in being a gold maker – rather than a step by step instructional list. As the saying goes, “give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”.
News & Updates
Undermine Journal for Classic
Wowhead.com staffer Erorus
who also runs
The Undermine Journal
shared some thoughts on the subreddit this week,
putting out some feelers on whether there should be coverage of the Classic Auction House on TUJ
.
I've been thinking about what would be required to support Classic realms at TUJ. It's a lot of stuff. Supporting separate game data (items, enchants, etc) from retail is something we've never had to do before. And that's just the start of it.
As far as I know, there will be no auction data API for Classic realms at launch, or for a while after, if ever. This means we'd have to collect data in-game. I'm not optimistic about the feasibility of collecting it myself in an automated way, so I'd probably rely on users running an addon and some software to submit data they collect to the site. Users would have to run getall scans at their auction houses, which takes about a minute or so, and run an app or have some scheduled task to upload that data.
In order to incentivize people to submit auction data, I'm thinking of keeping all classic realms closed, except for realms for which the logged-in user submits data. For example, if you just submitted a scan for Medivh-Alliance and Lothar-Horde, then you can view all the data we collected (from you and from others) on those realms for the next 48 hours or so, as well as aggregate region-wide data, but all other realms are inaccessible. We may allow public viewing if some realms have a surplus of data, not sure though. I just want to make sure we get a good amount of realm coverage.
There would be a lot of work ahead to set up a "Classic TUJ", but before that continues, I want to know your thoughts and opinions. Do you even want a Classic TUJ? How do you feel about running and submitting in-game scans to have access to pricing data? Have any better ideas on how to get auction data? Any other concerns?
This has continued the discussion about whether modern tools and addons should be brought in to the Classic WoW environment. As I've mentioned in my last Classic edition of the blog, I don't think they should - but it depends if you're approaching this release with the expectation of going back to Vanilla WoW or that Classic is a separate entity in 2019. In these situations there's unfortunately no middle-ground, when these tools and addons are made available then you'd normally need to use them in order remain competitive and get the most out of your time spent in the game. Particularly for economy related things.
Discussion Point
Would you utilise a Classic version of The Undermine Journal? Would you contribute scan data? Or would you prefer not to have these kinds of tools available for Classic?
30 Day Token Challenge
Our friend
The Lazy Goldmaker
has started up a new challenge to earn enough gold for a Token in 30 days, using a freshly leveled 120 character. I think these kind of challenges by established gold-makers are really insightful and helpful as they allow new goblins to see the thought processes and decisions that are made in the very early game to help establish a solid profit generating strategy. Naturally there are going to be some mistakes, or what I still like to call learning opportunities, that you don't have to make yourself. The idea wouldn't be to copy and paste what is done in this challenge, since that likely wouldn't work out due to lots of variables, but to adopt the mindset and approach to the objective and apply what you learn to your own server and play style.
In a recent blog, The Lazy Goldmaker went over the rules and goals.
The Challenge
The challenge is incredibly simple. With one level 120 character, that starts with no professions and just 9000 gold I will try to get enough gold for a token in less than 30 days. Before we go into the rules I will go through the purpose of the challenge. I want to put myself back in the shoes of a newer player working towards their first token. This will both help me figure out what works well in that situation as well as get a better understanding of the specific issues you would face.
The Rules
1 character, which is a completely fresh level 120
No brutosaur
1 realm obviously
I start with 10 711 gold (This is what I got leveling from 110-120 while vendoring every single drop.)
I start with level 1 professions
I start with the materials I got from leveling 110-120
Initial Approach
I already outlined my plans for professions in this post. Things have changed a bit since then, and I will be doing the challenge at a pretty bad timing as we are waiting for 8.2 As I outlined in my post on 8.2 I believe a lot of materials will be going down in price.
Based on a new look at the professions and my thoughts I plan to start out with material flipping, limited to materials I expect to keep their value and most likely a combination of tailoring and enchantment to craft sinister combatant gear, bags and the enchanting shuffle. The same professions still seem like the best choices.
I definitely wish Lazy Goldmaker well and fully expect him to comfortably complete the challenge, either that or it'll be the other extreme and the outcome is such a failure there are very important lessons to take away from it. Either way, it'll be worth it as an observer to learn about the process.
If you'd like to stay informed on the latest updates on this challenge, definitely check out
Lazy Goldmaker on Twitter
where he'll be sharing daily posts with the current status and gold count.
Discussion Point
Do you think you could make enough gold for a Token in 30 days on a freshly levelled 120? What would be the first thing you do? What kind of overall strategy would you go for?
Gold Making Streamers
It's been about 18 months since I featured a list of content creators, naturally some of those people have stopped participating in the community and new ones have started their journey. I thought it'd be great to go through an updated list or directory of people you should check out if you're looking to watch some live streams of gold-making WoW players.
