WoW Economy Weekly Wrap-Up
Hello! Welcome to the 120th edition of the WoW Economy Weekly Wrap-up!
My name is
Samadan
and I am a content creator focusing on making gold using Professions and
TSM
. I have a number of guides over on
YouTube
and I also stream my adventures on
Twitch
. If you want to see previous articles, they are all archived
here on wowhead.com
Shadowlands Alpha - Let's Talk Professions
Amazingly for an Alpha release, there has been a surprisingly large amount of information already gathered around one of the principle gold making methods in the game - Professions. Wowhead has been sifting through all the data already and there is a
comprehensive list
of what has been found out so far regarding professions ..
What do we know so far?
So, it looks like many Professions have had many changes for the better with many possibilities for making gold. There is a sense that the heart of Classic Professions has returned to retail with the return of oils and stones as well as a sense that professions mean something valuable again.
Alchemy
has a range of potions e.g.
Potion of Deathly Fixation
and now the addition of oils like
Embalmer's Oil
and
Shadowcore Oil
adds to the variety Alchemists can produce (and sell). It also looks like Alchemy is following Inscription now in needing to convert Herbs into an
Extract
, rather than creating the potions straight from the herb like in BfA. There is also a
Cauldron
and
Alchemist only Trinket
.
Enchanting
has a large range of slots available for improvement which means a greater variety of sales and larger demand as players upgrade their gear. We now have enchants for
Rings
,
Gloves
,
Chest
,
Boots
,
Bracers
,
Cloaks
and
Weapons
! There are also enchanted reagents for use in other professions -
Leatherworking
,
Blacksmithing
and
Tailoring
as well as a token
Wand
.
Jewelcrafting
is making good use of the 6 ores added to the expansion over the usual 3. There are the typical
Neck
and
Ring
items as well as Legendary versions of both (
Shadowghast Necklace
and
Shadowghast Ring
). It's worth noting they all have sockets, making the Jewelcrafters secondary gems even more in demand. There are also special gems called Clusters that as well as being able to be used as a gem, can also be used as an optional crafting reagent to guarantee a secondary stat on a crafted item.
Engineering
has some great utility items including bombs like the
Holy Hand Grenade
. There appears to be a glider kit for each covenant and the usual Guns, Scopes and Engineer only Goggles.
Inscription
has a new set of Darkmoon Cards e.g.
Darkmoon Card of Death
that can be turned into Decks and something new in
Words of Power
, an optional reagent that increases the item level of crafted armour. It looks like Milling and Ink creation is still present. It also looks like Scribes can make
Staves
as well as
off-hand
items.
Tailoring, Blacksmithing and Leatherworking
all have their respective suite of craftable armor sets. Legendaries are back which is great to see, specifically as they are currently labelled as Bind on Equip. No bags upgrades have been found as of yet that I can see. Leatherworking has Armor Kits again similar to Classic.
Cooking
has the usual range of stat food as well as specific Sandwiches for each Covenant such as
Ardenweald Zonewich
.
All in all the range of possibilities is very exciting and from first impressions it seems that multiple professions will work with each other. I am looking forward to learning more as it's developed.
BregVids has a video going through his thoughts on professions ...
What we don't know yet.
There does not seem to be any sign of multiple ranks of professions or the requirement for a bind on pickup element like the previous expansions
Expulsom
and Legions
Blood of Sargeras
yet. How this may or may not develop we will see. Whether we might see any Tools of the Trade is another layer that may or may not get added in the future. How we get hold of the base components or materials for some of the higher end Legendaries is also too early to tell yet.
What will the barriers to entry be? Will certain recipes be locked behind reputation or certain zones. mobs dungeons we do not know yet. There don't appear to be any links to PVP gear like there were in BfA. How expensive or difficult will it be to level up a Professions
What would we like to see?
Now is the time to speculate and discuss what we would like to see in Professions and discuss what we think of it so far. Personally, I think it is off to a great start. There seems to be a wide variety of desirable effects and enhancements from many professions which means ultimately more sales on the Auction House!
How this all balances out with time/investment to gain the professions and the cost of crafting vs. the time it takes to craft and collect the required materials remains to be seen. It would appear Alchemy and Inscription both have a time limiting factor in having to Extract and Mill before Craft. What steps and processes result in the most efficient way of gaining Enchanting materials will also be interesting to find out. If I never see a scrapper again, I'll be happy! I want the gaining of profession skills and to some extent the materials to be a challenge yet attainable by many.
Reputation barriers seem the most sensible way of limiting professions so long as there is plenty of player choice in working towards an end goal. Limiting behind something not enjoyable with only one method of accomplishing said task can put many players off pursuing that goal. Player choice and discreet goals and core when it comes to motivation.
As much as talking about what we DON'T want, what DO we want? Ultimately, I want to be able to craft a number of items that other players want so I can sell it to them. It doesn't have to be BiS gear, but something that helps other players "feel" more powerful and motivated to buy the items will result in an active market. This way I think Legendaries similar to Legion are a great start.
Is there anything missing from current professions? I'd love to see another iteration of Tools of the Trade. Not all of them, Silas was a poor example of RNG gone mad,
Iwen's Enchanting Rod
and the
Synchronous Thread
were fantastic because they gave a useful passive bonus all the time. The Tools of the Trade were also great from the perspective of having a quest line to follow in attaining them. More of this please!
Would we like to see a new profession? Personally, I's love to see Carpentry as a profession! I want to be able to make a Bank Wagon to attach to the Brutosaur and then and Engineering Mailbox Pogo Stick to follow behind! I'd love to be able to make Staves and Bows but work with other professions to combine them into a more powerful item.
Perhaps this would be better reserved for if ever there was player housing and then I can make furniture?
What would you like to see with current and future professions?
Things You Never Knew You Needed
One quality of life addition made in Shadowlands Alpha was the neat
addition of a mail icon for characters
with unread mail on the character select screen.
This is fantastic! Thankyou Blizzard! The
WoW Economy Reddit
had a few interesting responses ..
I post pets on a lot of different servers at 48 hours. On the interim day I check to see if I've sold anything so I can pull any sold pets out of my pet collection to make room to buy more of those pets if I can. It keeps a good flow to everything since we're limited to only 3 of each pet in the collection. Anyway, if I don't get any sales on a server and I'm aware before logging in I don't need to go through a loading screen and that can save some time.
Can we also get rest time/status for characters that are sub 120?
As an altoholic I've been dying for these 2 changes.
Hope it will also show time until mail is deleted or returned!
The Next Gold Sink
There was also discussion as to
whether there would be another gold sink
like the Brutosaur mount in Shadowlands?
The ideas were great and plentiful ...
The mount I've been waiting for is flying vendor mount. No more mammoth, sell, then mount flying to move on.
Mini dalaran city with a khadgar head in a ball, has everything included (smith, all trainers, barber, dad jokes, transmog, AH)
I'll give you 10 million but for a companion pet with a mailbox
Next mount will be a rideable mage portal
The mighty clefthoof barber shop!
It’s going to be some absudely large mount with a barber shop, vendor, and a transmog npc. Maybe a giant flesh and bone crafted golem, huge like those giants in ICC before you fight Lord Marrowgar.
A 10 seater battle mount would be fun.
It would be cool as hell if they did a mount similar to the draenor BS mount (steelbound devourer?) That had a forge and anvil on it
The goldsink mount will be a giant caravan (like the vulperas use) complete with unicorns pulling it. It will have a mission table and personal bank in it, together with a tmog closet and a repair anvil
What unique, yet incredibly expensive in-game mount or item would you like to see?
