Mystery Items in WoW
As discussed on the show,
Terkie
was added to the game weeks before players discovered it. Here's a look at other fun mystery items, and some things Blizzard does to obscure items from players.
As Game Designer Muffinus tweeted, he started experimenting with obscure items during Patch 5.2:
Graine ardente
is an item druids could loot from
Graine ardente
near Staghelm's portal in
Terres de Feu
which turned them into a fire kitty. It took players
over a month
to discover it, and was very popular once announced.
Sac de pièces de survivant
is a rogue-only toy that involved Ravenholdt Manor,
Glyphe de déguisement
, and
Glyphe carbonisé
. It too took several weeks to be discovered after the patch went live.
During the Warlords beta, the
Petopia community
worked together
to discover how to tame the exotic pet
Gara
. They looked through the Wowhead data for items with similar IDs and made educated guesses on where they were from. They later
worked together in 6.2
to discover how to tame the
Loup gangre-lié
wolf.
Another Warlords example is the
Serre du Vide de l'Étoile noire
. This mount was teased in a Patch 6.1 video preview as a difficult mount to obtain, but it took players a few days on live servers to discover how the portals worked. It was not found during the 6.1 PTR.
There are other ways Blizzard tries to prolong surprises in the data.
There have been NPCs added into the game with misleading names that are later changes to the correct names. For example, all of the rare spawns in Draenor that drop mounts originally had Silithus-themed names. Special battle pets like
Bourbidan
and
Patte-Radieuse
were originally unused Gronnling mounts with placeholder abilities, and the Heroes of the Storm pet
Sépulcre
was originally "My Special Pet."
Some items that show up in the data are also unused for several patches. For example,
Luciole saphir
and
Phalène cramoisaile
were added during the Warlords beta, but were only obtainable as rare spawns in Patch 6.2. The
Armada de Fer
toys, obtainable in 6.2.2, originally showed up as non-toy tonk controllers during the beta and were mostly-forgotten about when Warlords went live.
Most times unused items are forgotten about, but a few do catch on among the community. For example,
J’ai trouvé Pépé !
and the disguises were added months ago, but only went live last week.
There are several unused items currently that are interesting:
Lame-tonnerre, épée bénie du Cherchevent gonflable
: Equip your Inflatable Thunderfury. Also has the
Est-ce que quelqu’un a dit… ?
achievement.
Fleur mystérieuse
: Toy from beta that didn't make it to live--there were flowers on the beta you could interact with and trigger a short random event.
There are several unused mount recolors such as
Yu'lei, fille du jade
,
Rênes de trotteur aquatique orange
,
Rênes du yack de Kafa
. They may pop up in a later patch as some mounts get added years before appearing in-game, like
Faucon de gangrefeu
,
Rênes de serpent-nuage céleste doré
,
Rênes de serpent-nuage céleste azur
, and
Rênes de trotteur aquatique cramoisi
.
Spiritueux de Panse de Fer
is a toy from the unused quest
C’est bon pour le moral !
.
Massacreur gnome de fête
: Added during Warlords' beta, this item would let you strike a celebratory pose.
Do you think we'll see some of these added in the future? Any other unused items or achievements you'd like to see in game?
