They've taken it down completely...But it was a video of the Lich King dropping down to his knees, the helm falling of his head, and him struggling for a second or two to reach for it. He couldn't, so he just decided to drop dead.
If we remember the beginning of all this, we can easily recall how Arthas' descent into darkness began with the slaughter of Stratholme. His recklessness only grew, and his absence of morality grew along with it, finally surmounting to him murdering his father. His lack of human morals can be speculated at best to be replaced with the brutality Ner'Zul held and mastered, yet in the book, with the child and orc at his side, he ends both of their lives. Which I would hope would be easily assumed that Ner'Zul's grasp and master plans for the human were foiled with the fusion of him and Arthas occurred. Lets take a moment to respect this process before we ravage it in 3.3. What has been created, is in itself a perfect definition of evil, heartlessness, ambition and most of all efficiency. Arthas himself could never be as cruel as the Lich King due to his resounding passion to rid the Scourge once and for all, that is after all why he traveled to Northrend in the first place. This is why its highly unlikely we will see him redeemed, he is too far gone to have had any shred of human morality, even for Arthas, there would be some hope, but with him extinguished, it would only be a wasted effort to attempt redemption. Now Ner'Zul, if anyone were to remember him back in the days of Warcraft II, his passionate desire to obtain power, to strike fear into the hearts of his enemies, while this all may seem very like the Lich King, yet we know from the book , the orc being killed as well, his intentions were destroyed in the fusion as well. The orc had an agenda, world dominance across the nether, his reasons for opening so many portals was to expand his rule to other worlds. His actions were out of a passion to conquer not decimate. The Lich King has no remorse fo leveling empires, something Ner'Zul's greedy lust would grasp tightly and milk for its worth. Ner'Zul's ambitions were never to smite out life, but to reap it for its wealth, where as the Lich King would gladly snuff out all life, with satysfaction without riches. His reaching for the helm has been speculated as a symbolic and literal loss of power, we must remember, no other piece of armor had been used to fuse the two into the Lich King, the helm alone caused the merge and in my opinion, having the two separate doaners(Ner'Zul and Arthas)already willingly or unwillingly sacrifice themselves in the merge, what would be left to keep the Lich King alive then the token used to create and bond him.Two sides, a lust for power and wealth and an over zealous crusade to destroy what in the end you would ultimately become. Both now void within this harmonious master piece of ruthlessness we know as the Lich King. An entirely new being, created out of two corrupted entities. I without a doubt belive the Lich King is himself a new creature, who's origins can only come from the highest of the fallen, sacrificing them entirley to create, as I said earlier, the most beautiful of evils.
Damnit, I love looking smug. That blind, half night elf mongrel let me down this time. :(
On a LK killers sv there's a lore about killin' LK in Icecrown Citadel and it goes like this:some1 in the raid must have a Soul Gem(like Jaina's in W3 in the Orc's Campaign) with Arthas' Wondering Soul found somewhere in Icecrown captured....then the player with the Soul Gem must channel a spell 2 return Arthas' Soul into LK's body when engagin' him.....this will make the player 2 get into LK's soul and must help Arthas(human pally) 2 kill Arthas(DK counterpart). At that point of the battle LK will stop attackin' every1 and banishes himself. After the player inside LK's soul defeats DK Arthas,LK dies and from his body Arthas is reborn as a human. Also at this encounter Frostmourne split into 2 parts:Frozen Edge of Frostmourne(dagger) and Handle of Darkness(polearm) that must be fused resulting Cursed Runeblade Frostmourne.Still alive?Good. Now u must absorb the Spirit of Ner'Zhul(that remained in his body after u take out Arthas) from the body of LK.Now results:Dulled Frostmourne.2 restablish it's former powers u must take it at a Soul Forge( in the Forge of Souls) where u'll restablish it.Now the stats:2h;dmg 750-1250, speed 10,Enquip:increases Crit strike rating by 60;increases melee attack power and resistance 2 shadow and frost by 70,when killing a target by a melee attack(or Physical skill)absorbes the soul of the enemy creating a random stone(like the locks stones);change on hit:rend the target's soul generating 25% mana or 50 rage or 60 energy or 40 runic power.....now that's a really must have weapon
So he has a death animation? I am in no way convinced that this animation is conclusive proof that he dies. He is the master of the undead for god sakes. We have all seen that death of the body pretty much means nothing in this game.
Couple of things. Kil'jaeden didn't have tens of thousands of years to torture Ner'zhul. Ner'zhul died a decade or two ago. And, yes, a death animation by itself doesn't prove anything. But death animation unlike any other in the game. Keep in mind, most of the bosses share death animation with other mobs of their kind (e.g. Lord Jaraxxus dies just like any other eredar; Anub'arak dies just like any other crypt lord)... and the Lich King just got a pretty unique - an absolutely unique - animation.
I thought it had already been known for a while that the helm was the source of his power?
Note: TL;DR at very bottom (speculation and spoilers involved). From all the lore leading up to this point, I suppose the following speculation could bring some sense. Before the events of the WotLK expansion, Arthas banishes his "humanity" (seen in-game as Matthias Lehner) and consumes Ner'zhul. We can safely say that Matthias is no longer a part of Arthas. However, Ner'zhul is as he was consumed. Note that at the end of the Northrend quest chain, Tirion destroy Artha's heart. The heart would be related to Matthias Lehner, or perhaps even represent him.The Lich King himself (not the Scourge in general) has a lot to do with souls; Frostmourne steals souls, Ner'zhul is a soul (or presence) inside the armour; Artha's own soul, is stored as Matthias (ergo his heart).I think when ArgentSun crossed out the "Snape kills Arthas" part, that might have been a hint. For those of you who are not into the Harry Potter series, the main antagonist in the series keeps himself alive via artefacts which store a part of his soul so that if his physical body is somehow destroyed - but his artefacts still intact - he is still able to come back to life using those artefacts.Do not read the following if you do not want to be potentially spoiled. From all the above, we can derive to a complicated possible ending scenario.Arthas' soul ceased to exist after Fordring destroyed his heart at the end of the Icecrown chain. However, his heart was important as it allowed him to continue existing should his other artefacts (Frostmourne and helm) be destroyed. The difference between his heart and the latter two is that his heart makes him weak; it contains his humanity, but also his soul; ergo Fordring commenting that "there is no more Arthas Menethil", referring to the fact that the Lich King removed the "Arthas Menethil part of himself".The helm would constitute the Ner'zhul part of Arthas; although "tamed", it is still possible for the Lich King to exist even if he loses both Frostmourne and the helm. Why is Frostmourne important? Well, Frostmourne steals souls, but we don't see it in the death animation. One possibility for this is that Frostmourne is an added item; like how Illidan's glaives are. Another possibility might have to do with the sword being broken. This can be due to Ashbringer, or it can also serve as a precursor to another quest chain...Confirmed spoilers below (well, not in the literal sense confirmed, but as in "not speculation")An excerpt from MMO champion:
