interesting read. thanks for the clarification and information
Isn't that post completely made up with no actual data? I'm surprised to see this site take it as gospel truth without any word from Blizzard one way or another.

This is actually really cool as a way of doing loot, glad to hear there’s a way of targeting certain drops!
Even if this isnt true, it might get enough attention to make Blizzard respond to it & tell us if its true or not.
This made it as clear as mud.
This made it as clear as mud.\r\rIf you want the Pirate-themed drops, queue up the Island that has the Pirate creature type and make sure you kill the Pirates.
I came to the same conclusion recently : we targeted specific monsters with friends and only obtained related loots. \rAlso, it felt like the last rare we killed had more impact than the others.
I don't like it that you have to do it like this or that it works like this. "If you encounter some Pirate themed rare creatures and manage to kill them, Pirate themed items such as Squawks may show up on the loot window at the end of an Island Expeditions for one of the participating players."
This is actually really cool as a way of doing loot, glad to hear there’s a way of targeting certain drops!\r\rIt's preferable to just a random 1/319 chance per island, but I hope the Island itself doesn't matter. If a certain thing only drops from a certain Island and it's a 1/3 chance of getting the "right" Island, that'll be annoying. Worse if you have to roll the right Island and then the right events on it.
I had stated this earlier in the month on several comments to individual items and pets I had obtained multiple times. So it is nice to see an article on WoWhead agreeing with my experience on how to increase drop chances as some of my comments were down voted.
If this is true, it's really stupid because it directly contrasts the way you're "supposed" to "win", ie, grabbing azerite from every and any source as quickly as possible.
My experiences with Islands supports this- though I've seen some rare drops that don't seem to have a clear correlation, the vast majority of rewards I've gotten are related to the mobs I've killed.
imagine... a game where the way getting gear works is only put into theory.. instead of being clear for your average player base.
Squawks can drop from the Fleet Navigator rare that spawns at the Pirate invasion with a PORTAL -- in this case it would be the Cannon that shoots to her boat.\r\rPretty sure the mounts drop from the Portal named rares on the final invasions.
I just got a Vrykul transmog helmet after killing some in an island, so this makes sense.
"The normal way people ‘do’ islands is counter-productive and does not reward you with items (at all, in some cases)."\rWhich is completely ridiculous, especially if you're tackling these with random groups. \r\rI'll concede that it's an interesting way of handling things, but it isn't enjoyable. Oh well, I'll just buy all the pets off the AH.
I have already confirmed a few themed loot. For example, farming expeditions for mounts and pets, only the special rares, I got the qilen mount twice from Mogus invasions. Pirate theme is rare this week.

For all we know, it's 100% RNG. Case in point, when I got the Vrykul sword...there were troll invaders. Go find me 2 dozen players and do this over a 6 month period...then I'll believe it. Now I'm not saying he's 100% wrong either, but clearly he isn't 100% right, otherwise I never would have got got the sword off of trolls. Is it possible it increases based on those factors...maybe, but this isn't proof. It's a clickbait article based on limited research.

It seems like it might influence it, but we naturally want to infer things we have no control over. I need more data.
