Village of Warcraft: Small Scale Story Telling in WotLK
15/01/2009 à 07:00
responded to one of
about moral choices in WoW, and how they don't really exist. He says:
In other words, Blizzard is telling the story that Blizzard wants to tell (albeit with many loose ends and very, very slowly - how long did it take us to get anywhere with the new plague storyline? Almost six years?), and the players are really just along for the ride. WoW kind of has the perspective of the Tom Cruise War of the Worlds. That movie spends its entire time focusing on characters who, in any other movie, would be extras streaming past the camera.
Of course you can tell stories about people like that. But you have to stop and focus on them, and narratively speaking, WoW doesn't.

In some ways I think I have to disagree with Nab's point. He's right about the structure. There is this two pronged duality in WoW that insists the PC is important and special while paying a lot of attention to the NPCs that, more than merely being outside the player's control, are basically unseen by a

So the Wowhead Blog has been active for two whole months, as of today. This seemed like as good a time as any to stop and check in on how we're doing.
So, I'd love to hear everyone's opinion. How
we doing? Are you guys reading stories that you like, or that are interesting? What are the stories you skipped over? What are the ones that you'd like to see more of? Who's your favorite blogger? How often do you check the site? And are you linking your favorite articles to your friends, hm?
I'd love to have everyone post thoughts, comments and feedback in this comments thread. I can't guarantee that we'll
it (you have to write what you know, of course), but we'll certainly take it into account. ;)

Everybody likes a good story, right? Everybody loves a good story about a hero overcoming tremendous odds to achieve victory even more, right?
No, those weren't rhetorical questions.
In particular, I'm a
for stories in which the main character is able to save the day and do the right thing exclusively because of the strength of his/her convictions. The quality that makes him/her able to save the day is that he/she wants to do the right thing more than anything else in the world.
What can I say? I'm a romantic. And yet, that's not really something that the story of my WoW characters can be about.
Dear Wowhead... (Episode 4)
12/01/2009 à 03:39
Kindly forgive my lateness this week, dear readers! An unavoidable change of plans saw me making a quick flight back to Silvermoon City, many miles away from my usual writing desk here at the Legerdemain Lounge. Perhaps I'm in need of a letter to Miss Manners myself!
In any case, I have returned, and today I have a letter that comes to us postmarked from the Eastvale Logging Camp. Here goes:
I am a human paladin speaking for – believe it or not – a murloc from Elwynn Forest. While walking along one day, helping a young adventurer, I realized a murloc was talking to me! Anyway, on to the story. He says that his egg-mate recently left to go to another village, and he is heart-broken. He won't take my advice, but maybe he'll take yours.

It's me again!
Didn't have much motivation this week to give you a full comic, so I made something... unusual.
Introducing the first of what will become the Azeroth Justice League!
Milk-Man the Magnificent, defender of the weak, savior to the malnourished.
I felt Taurens needed some love, they are after all big cuddly cows. And what better way to show my love than to dress one up in spandex, red undies, and a cape.
Remember kids, don't take it seriously. I make these silly comics for my own enjoyment, and I ask nothing in return.

A Little Spring (Winter?) Cleaning
10/01/2009 à 15:15
So in an effort to try and clean things up a little bit around here, we've made a few little changes to our forum system. :)
For one thing, we've renamed the "Beginner's" forum, it's now called "
Help & Support
". We wanted to make it clear that this is not a "noob" forum. It's a place for people to ask the questions they can't seem to find answers to otherwise.
For another thing, we've decided it's finally time for the "Wrath of the Lich King" forum to go.
Naxxramas and World Latency Fixes – A Message from Blizzard
08/01/2009 à 12:53
Blizzard has kindly asked us to make sure everyone is aware of the announcement they just made on the official forums:
Naxxramas and World Latency Fixes
For the last several weeks, our players have been experiencing periodic latency in both outdoor Northrend areas and Naxxramas, and we wanted to provide you with several updates on what we're doing to resolve these issues. As many players have discovered, the outdoor Northrend latency has been tied to activity in Wintergrasp. We are actively working on a server-side fix that should address the high latency experienced in the outdoor world when Wintergrasp is active. This fix is currently in testing on internal test realms and we anticipate that we'll be able to push it to live realms in the near future. Concerning Naxxramas, optimizations are being made that will address both the latency and disconnection issues affecting players while in that zone. These optimizations will be included with the next minor content patch.
We appreciate your patience as we work to address these issues.
I'm a Miner Forty-Niner
08/01/2009 à 00:41
Just a quick update today. I thought it was worth pointing out that the
official patch notes
listed on the
European WoW Site
contained a very interesting note:
Mining veins and deposits no longer require multiple hits to receive all the ore. Players will receive around the same amount of ore, stone, and gems they would have received from multiple hits.
What's that? I can't hear you over the sound of millions of miners rejoicing.
Return of the Furious Five
07/01/2009 à 02:30
Well, the five of us
had the time to get together and run again tonight, so I figured I'd take a moment to post again to make sure you knew I hadn't forgotten. :)
This time we ran
in about an hour, and found to our delight that we had time left over for a trip through the

Déchireuse de l'enfer
to a dedicated protection warrior?).
In the process of doing them, though, I got to thinking.
It's Flat! Using Wowhead Maps
06/01/2009 à 01:59
The parrot spoke in a language I could not understand. Had I a cracker, I might try to coax the rainbow-colored Polly into guiding me to the nearest encampment...but empty-handed, I was forced to go it alone – all alone in the deep, damp jungle. The night was quickly approaching as the sun sat midway on the horizon. Unlike some of my unfortunate companions, I was smart enough to have brought my own set of charts and maps...but I suddenly realized that without proper knowledge I may as well not even possess them.
Insert Wowhead. We have a wonderful tool here aptly named
. In this blog entry I will introduce the mapping system and show how to use it to explore, pinpoint, and share destinations with others. Stick around, it's definitely going to be a mappy New Year!
Dear Wowhead... (Episode 3)
04/01/2009 à 14:00
The Wowhead advice column returns this week with a letter that comes to us from Tinker Town!
For generations my family has been some of Gnomeregan's finest engineers, inventors and demolitions experts. My Great-grandfather was the inventor of the indispensable Polyphonic Sub-Range Anaylyzer! I know right?!
But lately, my thoughts have wandered from electro-spanners and thorium plated thermal adjusters. I have desires... DARK desires. Why, just the other day I was in my father's work shop helping him reconfigure the micro-cog agitator matrix of his spectral reinstantiator when I started thinking how great it would be if I could "summon" forth some worker to walk in from the void and do the work for me.
Aren't Gnomes supposed to be engineers? All this fanciful arcane fascination with fallen magics is wrong isn't it?

Happy New Year, everybody!
Comic theme is a little late, but I wanted to get back into the Sunday weekly release routine.
Gosh, darn those Night Elves and their pesky limb-stealing habits. Whatever shall we do?
Happy New Year!
31/12/2008 à 19:00
All of us here at Wowhead just wanted to take a few moments to wish everyone a Happy New Year. Everyone please be sure to drive safely, drink responsibly, and don't forget your New Year's Resolutions!
I'm personally resolving to spend less time writing blogs and more time actually levelling my damn character. :) What about you?
Nameplates & Suggestions to Blizzard
31/12/2008 à 03:00
In my entry today I'm going to discuss two little issues which I feel aren't being paid enough attention. Nameplates and the default threat system. You may be asking yourself, "What in Azeroth's three continents does threat and etched dinnerware have to do with each other?" The answer, of course, is you are silly. No, but seriously, these are two little topics which I'm going to present separately, then show you my suggestion to Blizzard to help truly maximize some of the already included features in the game.
Stick around for some exciting highs, disagreeable lows, and a lollercoaster ride you'll never forget. Okay, maybe not. Stick around anyway!
Holiday Security Issues & Advice
29/12/2008 à 00:00
This is a notice to let everyone know there has indeed been a surge in account security resulting in hijacked accounts, stolen items, and even loss of characters. It is very important we stress the fact that everyone needs to have their operating system, Internet browser, virus scanners, and/or any malware scanners updated to the most current versions. Please take the necessary steps to ensure no one can gain access to your computer or account without permission.
According to Blizzard, majority of accounts are compromised by one of the methods listed here, after the break:

Just How Epic Are Your Lewtz?

The scene is the
of Hellfire Citadel. A small group of adventurers lurks in the shadows, while
Grand Warlock Nethekurse
broods atop his throne. Suddenly, the heroes are spotted! A fel orc rushes at them with a roar, but a blast of flame from the party’s mage drops him in his tracks. More orcs have gathered their wits and join the melee. One is tackled by a druid who transforms into a panther mid-leap. The warrior hero is toying with Nethekurse, parrying blows and dancing circles around him. Enraged, the Grand Warlock doesn’t see the rogue who steps out of the shadows and plants a knife in his back. The evil orc falls with a thunderous clash.
Recognize that fight? How many of you have fought it as well?
Because I never did.

Wowhead Comic #6

Here's this week's comic, a little earlier than usual – and it's a big one!
Featuring myself, the Great-Fathers Winter, and my wonderful script writer, Web.
Your comic is early this week, so there won't be one on the 28th. I need a break! I've been a busy little girl lately.
Have an awesome holiday, everyone!
The Sungrass is Always Greener on the Other Side of the Zone

My faction choice has historically been
a little biased
. My first character was a Dwarven Hunter that reached the ripe old level of 42 in the original game before I got tired of getting ganked in
by bored Horde (which would make a good name for a guild, in my opinion). I also rolled a Dwarven Rogue as part of
a Three Stooges joke
. He was 'Cheatem'. I thought the name to be an apt one.
Regardless, most of my experience has been on the Horde side of the fence. I know that to be the case with Malgayne as well, so when I saw him exclaim
For The Horde...?
, the unsureness of his statement made me wonder if he was thinking of becoming a turncoat. So, I read his post. What did I learn? Malgayne suffers from the same syndrome that a lot of my friends do from time to time: Faction Envy.
