Now why did I think I could kill a Gas Cloud? Maybe because Blizzard let me attack it. It's sure kept my pet and my bodyguard busy for a while, as well as me stuck in combat.

These clouds are actually pretty neat, once you know what they do. You need to run through them, physically (or use the air jets around holes in the ground to float up to them). Once you do this, you get a two minute buff called Gassy; "You feel a little lighter and harder to hit..." Doing this will also stop your pets and followers from attacking the cloud. I don't know about any potential dodge or mitigation mechanics, but it does give you a little assisted "boost" to your jumping.
