Marksmanship Hunter Gear Recommendations
This section of the Marksmanship Hunter guide covers everything about gear: stat priorities, gear recommendations from dungeons and raids, and legendary item rankings. This guide is written by

Rotation & Abilities
Gearing and Stat Priorities
All hunters wear Agility Mail gear. From there, you can customize your build to some extent by choosing gear based on the secondary stats available. In Legion, with the vast majority of talent choices, Marks Hunters should consider the following priority when selecting gear:
Mastery > Critical Strike > Haste > Versatility.
Mastery is our best stat for essentially all situations, as it is currently set to have a relatively high damage increase to stat budget ratio. Many of a Marks Hunter's gear choices will be based around getting as much of this as possible.
Critical Strike's value is more impactful for Marksmanship Hunters because we lost 5% of baseline Crit in patch 7.1.5. It's currently our second most valuable secondary stat, and will remain so at higher ilvls with set bonuses. Many of the less desirable legendaries have been given additional crit, so if you're using one of those (see below) it should be easier to get back to a comfortable amount of crit.
Haste is also a strong stat for MM hunters, even if it doesn't always show in simulations. Having higher Haste means shorter cast times for Aimed Shot. This plays well with our tier 20 set bonuses, and also just makes for a better raid experience, as you won't have to spend as much time standing still.
Because of the extreme differences in possible item levels for each piece of gear, and the abundance of gearing options in mythic+ dungeons, raids, and world quests, there is no possible "best-in-slot" gear. Using the above stat weights should settle any disputes between different pieces you may have.
Tier Piece Set Bonuses
With the release of the Tomb of Sargeras raid, new 2 piece and 4 piece set bonuses will be available.
Casting two Aimed Shots in a row increases your critical strike damage by 15% for 6 sec.
Aimed Shot reduces the cast time of your next Aimed Shot by 8% and reduces its Focus cost by 8% for 6 seconds.
The 4 piece set bonus was nerfed considerably before it even became available in game. It went from perhaps the best single target damage buff in the game to only a slight damage buff, and sent Marksmanship Hunters from the top of the pack on single target / priority target fights (which are highly represented in Tomb of Sargeras) to around the middle of the pack. As this change was unannounced, we're still working out the kinks of how to best optimize its use. Check back regularly for more information.
Faim de Zevrim
has a 15% chance to not remove
Marque du chasseur
. This lets you the occasionally cast
twice in a row. While that was a decent damage increase at the beginning of the expansion, the nerf to
in patch 7.1.5 made this ring fairly undesirable. It can be a DPS increase in AoE fights, if you have lucky procs. In Single Target, it's often a DPS loss if not used very carefully.
Secret de Sephuz
- Successfully interrupting or applying a loss of control effect to an enemy grants you 70% increased movement speed and 25% Haste for 10 sec. This effect may occur once every 30 sec. This legendary will only be situationally useful in raids, and shouldn't be taken when other options are available. This may be a better option in dungeons, where crowd control abilities are more frequent, and it can be paired with using
Tir de lien
Piqûre de wyverne
Prydaz, chef-d'œuvre de Xavaric
-Every 30 Seconds, gain an absorb shield for 25% of your maximum health. The proc on this legendary doesn't gain you any DPS, but the stats make it a fine back up choice, if there's no direct DPS-based legendary available to you.
Masque vaudou du chasseur des ombres
- You heal for 20% of your Max health when you
Feindre la mort
, and an additional 5% every second for 10 seconds.
This is a huge healing buff, and will have situational usefulness in raiding and dungeons, primarily as a “panic button”, and to give you much more reliable heals, as
Feindre la mort
is available every 30 seconds. Though it is unlikely the utility of the extra heal will outweigh one of the direct DPS legendaries.
Ceinture de guerre de l'armée des Sentinelles
- Each enemy you hit with
increases the damage of your next
by 10%, stacking up to 20 times.
This is a very powerful item for AoE fights with a priority targets, which is most of the Nighthold Raid, and remains one of the top choices for your two Legendary slots.
Racines de Shaladrassil
- Standing still causes you to send deep roots into the ground, healing you for 3% of your maximum health every 1 second. As with many of the legendaries available to multiple classes, this will have situational usefulness for survivability, but will not be the first choice of a raiding hunter.
Raquettes d'Ullr en plumes
- The remaining cooldown on
is reduced by .8 second each time you cast a damaging shot.
With a fully upgraded artifact weapon in addition to this legendary, you can often see the cooldown of
drop to below 90 seconds. This is one of the top choices for our two legendary slots for MM hunters.
Lanceur d'amorce explosive magnétisée
- Increases the damage of
by 800% and increases its range by 30 yards. With the latest buff to this legendary, it may have more uses in group PvE content, though the knock-back portion of Bursting Shot will not win you any friends with the melee in your group.
Stabilisateur gyroscopique Mod.II
- Your Aimed Shot grants you a 15% increase to the critical strike chance of your next Aimed Shot and makes it castable while moving. The stats and utility of casting Aimed Shot while moving make this a very desirable Legendary, and in some situations will beat out the belt or boots, if you have all three.
Perchoir de vigilance
Crafted legendary gloves. The legendary ability on these isn't going to provide much of any gain for instance PvE content. However, these have good stats, and the three gem slots lets you customize the stats, or just pile on more mastery.
New Legendaries in Patch 7.2.5
Ame du maître chasseur
- Grants you the talent
Prêt à tirer
, allowing you to take another from that tier in addition. When using this Legendary, you can always take
for extra attack power. This does require some amount of planning out your rotation for target swaps, and may not be the best choice in fights with lots of target swapping.
Célérité des Coursevent
Bourrasque de vent
grants you 15% haste for 6 seconds. This is a decent legendary, especially when used in concert with the 2 and 4 piece set bonuses. It does, however, take up one of your tier slots, and shouldn't be taken over the tier bonuses, if you have other good legendaries to use (like the belt or boots).
Because most trinkets are available in a wide range of ilvls, with sources from raids, mythic plus dungeons and world quests, there are no obvious "best-in-slot" trinkets. However, there are some things to look for. Stat sticks are somewhat over-weighted with secondary stats, and those including Mastery tend to be very powerful, especially as these tend to scale best with multi-target fights. There are several trinkets available from world quests or dungeons that are very powerful for single target fights due to their proc, including
Langue à pointes de Naraxas
La morsure du diablosaure
, if they drop with a high enough ilvl. From Tomb of Sargeras, keep your eyes open for
Médaillon de sentinelle terni
, which tend to be the best option of the raid drops for MM hunters, especially at higher ilvls.
Keep in mind that as with all gear in legion, with warforged, titanforged and socketing options, you may find better options elsewhere. For trinkets, ilvl may not be a good indicator of the relative strength of a trinket, but that doesn't mean that an extremely high titanforge proc won't make a week trinket better than a typically stronger trinket in some cases.
Gear To Watch For
Just in case it hasn't been said enough yet in this guide, there is very little chance of seeing a true "best in slot" gearset in Legion. Many things will make other pieces of gear better or worse for you, including your use of legendaries, your raid's strategies, your set bonuses, your talent choices, and of course, sockets and titanforging. So do not ever consider this list to be complete or definitive. However, there are some pieces of gear that, with all else being equal, will do well for you.
With all else equal, and assuming you aren't using a legendary in these slots, the best options for your tier pieces for set bonuses are:
Médaillon d'âmes brisées
Garde-bras marqués par la douleur
Poignes de fer de l'impénitent
Sangle de l'union indéfectible
Garde-jambes de puissance siphonnée
Bottines de traqueur d'étoiles
Sceau du Deuxième duumvirat
Bague de servitude en écailles
Pacte de sang man'ari
Plume de Serre-de-Lune
Remember for your relics, ilvl will almost always trump what trait they boost, so keep your eyes open for any relics that drop with titanforging. The extra Weapon Damage is just too good for MM hunters to pass up in almost all cases.
Slots to look for in Mythic +
While any slot might have a better option available from mythic + dungeons, especially in the early days of Tomb of Sargeras, when you're still progressing, there are a couple of slots that don't have any really great options from the raid, and might be best filled with M+ gear. Primarily, this includes your wrists, your gloves and one of your rings.
Finding Gear on Wowhead
From simple recommendations to advanced filters, Wowhead can help you find the gear you want.
is a great way to search for gear if you are new to Wowhead's filtering system.
Choose what item category, gear slot, and class specialization you're interested in, and it will return results for you. You can further narrow it down by source--including gear from LFR and heroic dungeons.
You can find the Item Finder via Tools > Item Finder or Database > Items > Item Finder.
returns personalized gear suggestions for you and shows which content has the most upgrades.
Simply load up the
with you preferred character and it will list gear recommendations in a 20 ilvl range for you. It will also list how many gear upgrades each boss has so you can plan out bonus rolls. Finally, the character planner will perform an audit and let you know if you have any missing enchants, glyphs, or gems.
If you have a character in our
which is great for tracking vanity collections and viewing your character in our 3D modelviewer, you can click on the "Planner" button in the header to access the tool. If you don't, you can just enter your information in at Tools > Character Planner.
Wowhead utilizes a powerful system of item filters to narrow down the gear you need.
, you can enter in some basic options at the top--the name of the item, its item level, the level the players needs to be. The "Usable by" dropdowns cover factions, class, and role.
The dropdown menu right above "Stat Weights" opens to display a variety of advanced options. These cover the following:
General item info such as Added in Expansion/Patch, BoE/BoP, Unique-Equipped, Class-Specific.
Stats: All primary stats, secondary stats, defensive stats, and weapon stats.
Source: All in-game sources, ranging from raid difficulties to the Black Market Auction House to sold by a vendor.
Miscellaneous: Many of these filters are not relevant to equippable gear such as Crafting Reagents and Toys, but you can filter for items that are currently obtainable.
Once you've selected a filter from the menu, click on Apply filter for search results. You can repeat the process to filter for multiple criteria at once--for example, Agility gear that is found in Mythic Foundry.
Over on the right-hand side of the page, you can select a particular Gear Slot or Quality to narrow results even further.
Finally, you can quickly view a subset of items at once using the Database Menus. Head to Database > Items and mouseover the Weapon and Armor options for quick links to gear arranged by armor type and slot.
